  1. First year tapping some maple trees. Been doing some research and wondering if anyone has some tips to share.

I have one that I read about. With the cold weather and the sap freezing a bit, I googled what affect the ice would have on it and how long I could store it until I got enough to Boil. Apparently the water in the sap forms ice first leaving the unfrozen part more concentrated with sugars. They say you can skim the ice off so there is less water in the sap, resulting in a faster process when you finally boil it down. Anyone have any experience trying this?

Also read you can store the sap for up to a week as long as temps don't go beyond 8-9 Celsius.

    Looking forward to hearing ideas.

  2. Been searching online for info on fishing this lake. We are headed up for a week next week. I could not find much to read - hope that is not an indication on the fishing we should expect.

I did read that it is 100 feet deep, holds perch, Lake Trout and Bass.

Hoping to get some suggestion on what may work when we will be up there. Anyone have any experience they care to share?

Alos, would you know of any nearby lake that might be better to try our luck on? Are there any with Pike in the area?

    thanks!

  3. Considering renting a private cottage in Deep Bay area of Georgian Bay. Actually the cottage is within a smaller bay in the area called Alves Bay (furthest east bay in the Deep Bay area).

Accoridng to the cottage owbners (new last year), the closest marina is 10 km away in Inverlochy. Was wondering if anyone knew of a closer launch to the Alves Bay area than Inverlochy.

Also, more importantly, how's the fishing in the area in early August? What can I expect to catch and what might work/not work?

    Any help would be appreciated...thanks.

  4. I will definitely try to be more careful next time. Their design could use some improvement. Anyone who has tried to remove one of those thumb screws knows how tight it can be to get in there, no matter how fat or thin your fingers are. Couple that with the rigger being mounted right on the rail, it's a perfect recipe for losing screws while removing the rigger on the water.

  5. Maybe my expectations are too high but I recently bought 2 new Scotty riggers and a couple weeks back lost one of the thumb screws that hold them down to the base while removing them at the dock.

I decided to contact Scotty customer service after having read a story posted on Spoonpullers about a Cannon user who had contacted Cannon regarding a part they needed and without even asking, the Cannon rep agreed to send it to them free of charge. I was hoping maybe Scotty would be as supportive to their customer and thought I would test this out by calling them about the screw I lost. I also wanted to take the opportunity to tell them that I thought their design was flawed.

So I called and spoke to the rep. I explained my problem and suggested that they should maybe reconsider designing the screws so that they do not come out all of the way (kind of like a stopper to prevent losing them over water). The rep suggested to me, as she says she has suggested to the number of others who call her regarding the same issue, to remove the riggers over land. This is obviously not practical when docked somewhere but nonetheless this was her answer to this seemingly common issue.

I then asked if the company could send me two replacement screws given that I am a recent owner of the riggers (having previously had cannons) and am just getting used to them and may likely lose another in the future. She explained that she could not as this was an aftermarket part that can be purchased at a number of locations. I told her that I realized that I could just purchase them at a retail store somewhere but explained that after spending more than $1200 on two riggers and having just purchased a new boat I was not at all concerned about spending another $10 or $20 on these screws, but was more curious if the company I chose for my riggers would stand behind their product and support their customers in this situation. She once again insisted that she couldn't send me any and told me that I would need to purchase them.

This is when I explained to her my original motivation to call - I told her about the cannon story that I read on a fishing forum that I was part of. I told her I was very disappointed in the outcome of my call and that I was second guessing if I had made the right decision to go with Scotty. I told her that I was hoping the company would do something that may cost them maybe $5 in postage and parts to keep a customer happy and more importantly, loyal...but I was wrong. It was at this point that the rep told me to hold on....she came back on the phone after a few minutes and told me that she did not want me to be disappointed and that she would send them to me. It was unfortunate that it took all of that to get the rep to finally agree to send me the parts. I was not impressed. Nonetheless, I waited for the part and when the package arrived about a week later, I found 1 thumb screw (talk about being cheap)! After requesting and thinking I was getting 2 screws, I got one.

Some may think I am being petty, but I think the story speaks loudly to the company and what they think of their customers. I am very disappointed in the company and will seriously reconsider buying Scotty again in the future. Companies spend countless amounts of money advertising and trying to acquire new customers, only to lose them over something as silly as this. I hope they have learned from this but only time will tell. It may also be possible that I was unfortunate to speak to someone who was not experienced in customer service or just had a bad day, and this was not typical of Scotty...but regardless of the reason for the responses I got, it left a bad taste in my mouth and thought it was important to share it.

  6. I am up here for a week and this is day two and still haven't even marked a fish on my sonar, let alone catch one. What happened to this lake, what am I doing wrong or am I spoiled to normally fish out of Lake Ontario.

I fished for about 5 hours so far and not even a sighting. Anyone have any suggestions they care to share. I am on the lake right now and can only see two other boats fishing. Maybe this is a futile cause?

Been trolling between 2.2- 2.7 mph. Using both spoons and body baits on very long leads. May try a flie soon. Problem is only one rod per person (unlike Lake Ontario). And this on a body of water that you definitely need more lines in the water!

Got my son and his cousin joining me tomorrow and wanted to get them into a fish or two. Cousins first time fishing. Otherwise anyone know where I can get them into some perch or other pan fish? Maybe collingwood harbour area?

    Thanks!

  7. I am towing with an Acura MDX and the hitch was factory supplied and installed in 2009.

I have used this same hitch and ball with my older boat and it had no problem at all. From everyone's comments, I now suspect the coupler on this new trailer may be the culprit as come to think of it on a few occassions I had a hard time getting the trailer to load onto the ball - having to get it just right/wiggle/jump on it,etc.... I have tried in the past to move the bolt up/down to adjust the ball opening, but could never seem to get it right. I have verified that both the coupler and ball are 2"...I am wondering if the coupler may be defective, mis-shaped or even mis-represented as a 2".

I just picked up a new coupler at a place next to my work today and when I have time on the weekend will try to trouble shoot the problem, including replacing the coupler. Boat is stored elsewhere so have to wait to do this. Anyway, I'll keep everyone posted on the outcome.

  8. Just got a brand new boat and trailer couple months back and noticed that the trailer jerks when stopping and accelerating from the stop. Seems as though the weight shift forward on a stop and then shifts back on acceleration. Can't imagine this is good for the vehicle. Never happened before on my previous boat, but it was also much lighter.

I checked the ball and coupler and they are both 2".

Is this normal? Anyone else have same issue or suggestion.

  9. You are planning to troll with your 150? How slow does it get down to on your current prop?

Have you considered a kicker? Long run may save you some $$ on gas, maintenance and repairs on the 150. Plus it's insurance in case the 150 conks out. Some of the reasons I got a kicker on my boat that has a 115.

  10. My understanding is that if you go up in pitch, ie 18 to 19, you will lose some on the hole shot and lose RPM but may gain in higher end top speed.

From what I read you want to hit as close to top rpm without impairing your hole shot to the point where it drags.

From what you mention, optimum rpm at wot is 6000 rpm yet you are achieving 5400 rpm. In my view you should drop pitch to 17 from 18 which should give you a better hole shot and allow you to reach closer to 6000 rpm. May even increase top end speed.

You have to find that right balance for your needs. Hole shot and top end.

Hole shot is key if you need it to get on plane faster or to pull a skier.

I have a 15 pitch and am going to try a 17 pitch on my new boat that has a 115 merc. I had a hard time with getting up on plane that I posted about a few weeks ago but since added smart tabs and is much much better. Now I can afford to go to a 17 pitch to try to increase my top end speed.
