  1. My grandpa has a 12' aluminum with a 6Hp Merc he bought new last summer.

It's a little groggy getting up on plane with two people in the boat. If you add the extra weight of a casting platform, and a trolling motor/battery, you’re going to feel under powered for sure.

The 6hp tolls very slow, and is nearly silent. Not to mention it's great on gas. I wouldn't be putting a trolling motor on there with the gas motor. I guess if your getting in to weeds looking for those buckets though, you may want a trolling motor..

As previously mentioned, a 9.9 2 stroke would be a much better fit if you’re adding the weight of a trolling motor and casting deck. There not a very heavy motor either IMO.

  2. It sounds like a decent sized dingy. Rated for a 35Hp motor, and 10 adults. I wouldn't be going any less then a 20hp.

As for pull start, or electric. If you go electric, then you have make room for a battery. But if your kids are going to be driving it, a 20Hp pull start my be a little to much to pull over. I have a 25, and the pull start can be a little hard on the shoulder at times.

I've run in a 12' dingy with 4 people in the boat, and a 9.9. It was a very slow run, we couldn't get on plane.

As for price range. HP isn’t the only factor. Condition is a very big part of it. I picked up a 25hp OMC, with two parts motors for $575. It’s a 1982. Your price target seems reasonable; you’ll just have to look around for a while. Look on Kijiji every day..

  3. By-the-way, I wasn't suggesting that 20 pound Trilene was my choice for a Pike leader, just that in an emergency it was available at CTC and more bite-off resistant that your raw 30 pound Powerpro.

    Garry2R's

    That's what i figured Garry.

Thanks a lot for all the info guys.

I'm about to hook my boat up, and get the heck out a dodge!

I'll post my results either Sunday or Monday if we have any luck!

  4. My wife had the day off today, so she went down to T.O. with a friend. I got her to pick up some 50lb flouro leader from BPS.

Thanks very much for all the input!

What knot to us use to tie a 50lb flourocabon leader to a swivel???? I'm giong to use a double Uni for going from braid to flouro. I usually use a palomar (edit on spelling thanks spiel!) to tie onto the swivel.. Will a palomar work for 50lb flouro???

  5. Hi Gang,

With the overwhelming reviews on here for Power Pro braid, I thought I’d better try some out.

I’ve used Spiderwire, and Fireline in the past. The Spiderwire is a pain in the :asshat: , but no complaints about the Fireline.

I grabbed a spool of Power Pro 30 lb test, and plan on testing it out this weekend pike fishing on G-Bay.

I found that I had to sharpen my knife before I could even cut through the stuff! It’s really tough stuff!!

This made me wonder. Do I need to use a leader when pike fishing with this stuff??

    What do you think?

P.S. I realize I should be using a heavy flouro leader, but I don’t have time to run down to Bass Pro before I leave to pick some up. So it’s steal or nothing..

  6. Before you go plastering your boat with JB weld, and sealant, you should try tightening the leaky rivets.

I had an old aluminum that leaked like a sive. Me and a budy thightened all of the rivets. There where a few that couldn't be tightened, so I marked them, and sealed with 3M 5200 marine adhesive sealant. I've used JB weld in the past, and it ended up cracking on me, and the leak came back. 3M 5200 will not crack, it takes a long time to cure, and remains flexable once cured.

To tighten the rivets, I used an pneumatic air hammar on one side, and a heavy sledge hammer head on the other side. Just a few hits with the air hammar, and they tighten right up. It took about an 1-1/2 hour to do the entire boat.

Doesn't leak a singe drop now.

  7. IMO they're worth every penny. I've been using one for a few years now, and have no complaints. Like other have mentioned, the portables are great on the back of a boat, and even better on the ice. I never hit the ice without my Humminbird 565. It will mark the depth of the water through the ice, you don't even need to drill a hole!

  8. Not sure that a conoe rescue would be the fastest way for them to respond to the numerous unfortunate accidents that occur each year.

    Cheers

    Craig

Come on man. I'm not saying that the OPP should switch their entire marine fleet to canoes. That's ridiculous.. But if they're out on a small no motor lake on general patrol, why not use a canoe, or a square back with an electric?

  9. I spent some time fishing the Gibson river this past week. Caught a few fish, mostly bass and pike, but we did catch one walleye, some catfish, blue gill, crappie and rock bass.

The water in the river is really mercy and dark colored. I found that the most productive lures for bass and pike where Hulla Poppers and Jitter Bugs, also got a few on a pink flatfish. My week of fishing has left me with a few questions. Maybe the wealth of knowledge here at OFC can help me out.

Questions #1 - Some (but not all) of the bass we caught where very dark. All of the bigger ones where. Is this because the water is so dark? I've caught really dark colored bass before, but not this many.

See pic bellow, this is my wife's first bass, and first fish of a decent size. She just started fishing this year, and she loves it!

Question #2 - I'm new to this Top Water thing. I'm noticing tons of strikes, but I can't seem to get the hooks in. Is this normal? I'm using a light, sensitive walleye rod, with 6lb braid. I think that's a little to light, as I broke off a few hulla-poppers trying to set the hook. What is a good set up for top water? Should I be hammering on the hock set right away, or letting them take it for a little before cranking it?

Here's a nice shot of the area we where fishing.

And here's my wife and dog enjoying a sunny day on the water. The wind was cold that day!

  10.

Anyways like I said, I do not relish the thought of coming on here and doing this, it has clearly made me look bad.

Not at all man. On the contrary.

Geary, I'm not doubting the fact that your clients caught 800 eyes in one day. What arks me, is there's people who have expressed serious concern about how you run your camp. What I would like to know if what you are doing to make your camp better. Not just another report showing big walleye and pike.

If you run your camp the way to respond to the negative posts in this thread (ignore them), then how is your camp going to get better?

  11. This post is really frustrating me.

Someone totally slams the guy. Actual reports of unsatisfied customers who have had their well being risked while fishing at this resort.. Potentially life threatening situations. What does the resort owner do?? Posts again talking about his clients catching 800 walleye in a few hours, and attaches a bunch of pictures to boot.... And to top it off, says that 30 the walleye where attacked by massive pike!

Maybe I'm alone on this one, but Kgeary, You're deterring me from even considering your resort for future fishing trips.

Give me a 40% Discount.. I'm still not coming to your resort.

  12. I design automation. Specifically for the stamping industry. Feeders, transfer system, and tooling. By the looks of it, Spiel knows what I'm talking about.. I don't design coil feeders though..

Fish Farmer.. Nice gig! I worked in a casting factory for 5 years pouring molten iron. To dam hot in the summer time! Good cash though.

  13. There are some good points here guys. A few more things I need to throw in the trunk..

I bought new tires for my trailer this spring. They are one side bigger the ones I used to have on. But I kept my spare the same size. I figure it will OK to use as a spare to nurse me home. The original where 4.8, 4 bolt, and the new ones are 5.7, 4 bolt. What do you guys think? Should I spend the extra $50 and get the correct size spare?, or will one size lower work??
