  1. Never tried it with a baitcaster, but with a spinning reel, braid is trouble when you jerk and pause. Either top water or jerkbaits. The line goes on slack, and knots eventually when you cast.

I have also found I lose jumping smallies. When they are in the air, as they tip their heads to the rod for a split second, the lines goes slack with braid and makes the hook more able to be spit.

I asked a Pro at the fishing show and they seem to agree.

I think a little stretch is good. I'm still looking for a mono that has less stretch and is still limp. I like the feel of braid but hate the knots. Anybody know of a good mono?

  2. I'm no expert but when they are saying pickerel, they are referring to chain pickerel, not walleye.

I think a chain pickerel is a type of pike.

I don't think a northern pike and walleye could mate and reproduce successfully. Too different

Do we have chain pickerel in Ontario?

  3. A dead mouse...no problem.

I've never liked using live minnows. Feel sorry for them as I hook them. But they sure catch more fish esp in clear water

Worms....no problem since they are a more primitive animal. But they aren't happy when you cut them up.

I wonder how many duckings and loon chicks get taken out by muskie on the Kawarthas.

Come to think of it, I don't think I've seen a cormorant chick swim with it's family

  4. You sure keep your money in a weird place. As long as the specs a the same or better for the aftermarket oil, be happy, don't worry. Yamaha, Mercury, BRP, etc, do not have their own oil wells. They buy oil in large quantities and add extra additives as required.

The way I figure it, perhaps they have the best additives for my girl.

For the extra $20 to keep my $12K investment running optimally, Id rather pinch pennies elsewhere.

    Like $60 for dinner out.

  5. Well, I don't know about other lakes but I do know that around here, where there would normally be 18" of water you are lucky if there is 2". Temperature here last night dropped to -6 with gusty winds all night. You can bet that the water will have lost more heat again last night. With a forecast high today of only +5 and with much cooler temperatures than normal forecast for the weekend, you can bet the fishing is going to be tougher than it was last Sunday and that was brutal. Four boats, 8 crappie for the day!

Hey Cliff. Don't know if you know about this website. Gives current water levels on Trent System lakes.

Looks like Sturgeon is way low. Pigeon (where I am) is higher and almost normal.

    What gives?

  6. My only real concern is that independent repairers can't get parts and technical information as easily for the German washing machines. This means its unlikely that you'll find a competent independent repairer. I would advise that if investing in a Miele washing machine, you need to be prepared to use Miele's own engineers or dealers for any future repairs. Miele's engineers don't charge more than many other manufacturers - it's just that independent engineers (if you can find a good one) usually charge a lot less.Of course parts are likely to be expensive too because they are high quality parts though even accounting for the quality it's hard to justify some of the prices of some spare parts, which franky can be astounding (eg. 800 for a motor, 300 for a pump). The idea though is that breakdowns should be far fewer, and overall, over a long period, the cost of owning and maintaining a Miele should be cheaper than buying cheap washing machines. However: Miele currently have really long guarantees that reflect their confidence in the quality - although these guarantees swap and change all the time because Miele use them for promotion instead of price cutting.

Miele washing machines have historically scored very highly on reliability and longevity but don't quite get full marks for ease of repairability. This is because although they are perfectly repairable, and in fact less likely than most to need repairing, because of a lack of good technical information and trade discount on spares to the independent trade most independent repairers don't repair Miele washing machines.

This means most people are likely to be forced into using Miele engineers for any maintenance. On the one hand, with such a high quality product you could argue that a fully trained Miele engineer is best - but not having the option to get your local trusted repairman in (if you have one) is potentially a disadvantage.

In summary, getting a Miele appliance repaired should be a rare requirement but if needed you would be better off calling Miele themselves, which is likely to be more expensive than a local repairman. In a way this is not too dissimilar to using a dealer instead of a local garage with a new car. It's not a problem if you prefer to use dealers anyway.

My advice would be that if investing in a Miele washing machine, you really need to be prepared to use Miele engineers for any future repairs. There is anecdotal evidence that some Miele customers (hopefully a small minority) are scrapping their appliances after a disappointingly short life because they are being quoted extremely high repair prices.

Everyone is proud of thier appliances. Check product reviews positive and negative, before you buy.

Thanks again Mercman and everybody else.

We have decided to purchase a machine likely from Sears since they have a store in Peterborough (20 min south of cottage) Still not sure which. The GE Profile machine is almost as expensive as a Miele. 50% more than the Bosch we were looking at. Kitchen Aids are also over a Grand. We were wondering if we buy a Bosch from Sears -shouldn't they be able to service it 20 min away?

  7. Thanks Mercman. I appreciate your input.

Very confusing for us consumers. Consumer Reports rates the Bosch machines the best and GE doesn't even show up in the top

    50 according to them.

I don't mind paying extra for greater reliability but would hate to do so for a problem machine

  8. My take.

Is that if the kitchen is of standard dimensions, and you don't require custom sized cabinets, you would save around 25% at

least if you buy from Lowes/HD for similar quality. Especially if you wait till kitchens go on sale.

I did my kitchen 3 yrs ago. $16K for big box with compromise on cabinet size. $21K for custom and a perfect fit/design.

Don't go to big box for counters. For either stone or laminate, you can do better going direct to the manufacturer

My son in Ottawa just ordered a standard L shaped kitchen with island from Ikea. $6K -and that included laminate countertops,

an Ikea dishwasher and he was even given a $1,500 gift card for Ikea. The quality is supposed to be good.

The good news is you usually get your money back when you sell with the upgraded kitchen.

  9. Hey Guys.

I need to replace a dishwasher at the cottage. Are any less troublesome than others?

I will be shutting the cottage down in the winter and will have winterize it. Are some harder to do that?

    Any advice would be appreciated.

    Thanks.

  10. US Coastal Pilot guide is the best source for this data. It only covers US waters, but that's fine for the Detroit R.

The Detroit River is controlled, so its speed doesn't vary by much.

Each speed given is an average of water flow from bank to bank and from the top to bottom. Current in the middle is about 1.5x the numbers given here:

    - Livingstone Channel Upper Entrance Light: 0.8 mph

    - Fighting Island North Light: 1.5 mph

    - 1.7 miles below the Ambassador Bridge: 1.6 mph

    - Lower end of Belle Isle: 1.4 mph

    - Peche Island Light: 1.5 mph

Didn't know the river is controlled. How do they do that without locks and dams?

Where abouts, specifically do you want to go in/out?
