  1. Thanks everybody.

    I'm using a Shamano Sahara 2500.

Will try a lighter braid. Maybe 15lb. Get the odd muskie fishing for walleye/bass. 8-10 lb might be too light

I'll get the Powerpro Super 8 Slick. Maybe Fireline. Will give you a report later. (BTW, noticed Shimano owns Powerpro on website)

Also, flipping the bale manually sounds like a good idea. When I bought the reel it was suggested to do that anyway, no matter which line is used.

    thanks again. Peter

  2. Spent the last 2 wks at the cottage in the Kawarthas. The muskie bite was slow so concentrated on walleye and bass.

I love my Powerpro for trolling. Can tell right away if I'm dragging weeds. It's great for casting too but.....

Had several episodes using my spinning reel with 30 lb Powerpro, that after a bunch of casts, a massive knot/tangle comes off the spool.

Pretty much have to cut the line and retie the fluorocarbon leader. Pain in the ass.

I'm chucking smaller diving crankbaits and retrieving them in a slowjerk/pause fashion.

After studying the situation, I think because the line goes slack immediately after the casted lure lands, or during a pause in the retrieve, the braid goes on the spool a little slack. I think it is that brief slack that is the problem.

I'm not sure what to do. Does this happen to others?

Would it be better to use a lighter Powerpro or other braid. A heavier lure? Stick to mono? Change my retrieve?

I think there is a new type of Powerpro -smoother

    Any suggestions would be appreciated

  3. Well. IMHO you got the brands of the boat and motor right.

Your size choice will depend on # of people you fish with and the size of body of water.

I have a Lund 1750 and Yammy 115. Bought it in 2007 new as a multispecies boat including salmon trolling on Lake O. It's hardly big enough for Lake O but may be too big for the Kawarthas where I now cottage. It's nice to take 6-7 people for a boat ride though.

Good luck finding used. Boat show in the winter best for new.

  4. I know all the reasons for having Aluminum...I absolutely love my Michigan Wheel Products Appollo 19" SS on my 2005 Yamaha F90.

I see lots of SS props out there but in my mind can't justify the huge difference in cost and inability to repair them.

Is the performance that much better?

  5. My degree is in fishing.

And you are correct that zebra mussel and water clarity are a factor, plus the re stocking of crappie in all the Kawrathas.

Crappie establish them selves in a lake and then explode in size and numbers, and then normalize.

So shoal spawning walleye spawn rite around ice out and the #1 predator is carb every spawning female will have 2-3 males with her and several carb.

About 2 weeks the walleye fry hatch and swim to the surface were the most algae is just about the time the crappie head to the banks. In the very early spring all of these lakes are dead no bugs no minnows just young of the year walleye fry.

The great luck crappie feed up and walleye fry are the available food source.

It was my hope that Scugog was self protecting in it's water color and I think it lasted better than Tri Lakes but the water definitely stays clearer longer.

The good news is Scugog is down but there are still guys out their catching good #'s.

Slot limits played no roll in Rices come back or Sturgeons.

The ticking time bomb is Balsam it's had the slot the longest. I haven't caught a giant in 3 years. Now if we get 2-3 years of poor spawn plus the crappie are starting to peak it will be a disaster.

Each of the Kawrartha's will face this ticking time bomb, when the overs die off. Yes I'm worried!

Garnet please clarify. Did you mean carp instead of carb?

  6. My take: fatty fish like alwives, herring, whitefish, trout equals large, fat muskies like on GB.

Contrast the Kawarthas. Long fish but the weight isn't there.

I suspect the French would be in between there.

  7. My Lund Tyee 17.5 came with a factory cover that snaps on beautifully. Trouble is, it was very snug and always a challenge to snap on. It is 4 yrs old and is already failing due to UV damage. Doesn't take much to tear it.

My dealer can make a custom tarp that he says is better material for less than a new Lund tarp and he will make it a little less snug.

I will take him up on it some day. Don't know $

  8. I wonder if the muskies have learned that otherwise hiding preyfish are a bit spooked by the boat/prop.

If they move, they show themselves and become vulnerable.

Muskies therefore see a boat as a positive thing and actually come to a trolling boat.

I'm going to ask the next one I catch.

  9. Fished a 10 ft deep weed flat with a perch crankbait at the cottage.

Thought I had a musky on the way it was pulling.

Very happy to see a 26 inch walleye. Nice and fat.

Big breeder fish. Had to go back in. Slot size is 30-50cm

    Water temp 73. Water clear
