  1. Cliff,

Sorry to hear about your experience.

I switched to VOIP via Vonage 6 montha ago and it went perfectly smoothly, and the call quality is fine ... lots of features for 20 bucks/month; includes 500 minutes of long distance in NA ... hate to sound like a commerical, but for me (and a friend of mine) it was fine.

The thing you do have to be aware of is your emergency call service goes through an internatinal operator -- I've tested it a few times and it adds, literally, about 3 seconds to get contacted to emergency 911 in Toronto.

Again - sorry you had such a lousy experience.

I've been on Vonage for 4 years now and have had a couple of equipment problems during that time and they bent over backwards to resolve the issues. I have quality issues during high use periods on my ISP's network but up in the NWT I kind of expect some issues, after all we are at the end of the road in the Arctic. B) I will occasionally use this Voip Speed/Quality Test if I am calling my folks as they can't hear that well and I want to make sure that I get a good connection.

As for 911 latency, it doesn't effect me as we don't have 911 service in the NWT. With Vonage however I do get 911 service as they do the routing for you so I don't need to dial an 11 digit emergency # (my phone# is back in Ontario so my friends and family can call me for free).

  2. I have run into this "waters mine" mind set plenty of times fishing steelies on Ontario and even New York.

Seems people think that because they got there first they own the water.

Doesn't matter that there are only two people fishing a hole that will comfortably fit a dozen or more without being crowded.

Some people are just :asshat: and there is nothing you can do about it "legally" :whistling:

Solopaddler and I even had it happen in Alaska last fall and the :asshat: was a guide.

We told the local CO who came to check our licenses later that day.

As luck would have it :asshat: guide guy just happend to be heading down river at the time so it was waaaaaaaay easy to describe him to the CO. She took after him and gave him her card and said for him to call her as she needed to talk to him. Very professional not to dress him down in front of his guests. I gather he was read the riot act later though. They are pretty serious about guide conduct in Alaska.

  3. Look..there is one thing plain and simple that stands out to me. The idiot involved was in violation of the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act as noted in this link. It was also likely a violation of the Federal Shipping Act. This person is in for a world of punishment if the police catch up to them.

If we simply blow this off, when does it end?

Was is racial? I don't know, but I would lay 3 to 1 that yes it was.

We are ALL ANGLERS. No matter where we are or where we are from. It is our right to fish in full compliance and protection of the law.

My experience as a Guardian with the MNR is that nothing makes an idiot stop doing stupid things faster than a camera. The uniform always made them curious... the camera made them run.

If you are being harassed or witness another angler being harassed...take pictures! Lots of them. It does not even matter who is in the right...take a bunch of pictures. If words are loud enough to be heard, switch your camera to movie mode and get some of that too.

Many of you may remember about a year and a half back when a member had taken a pic of a musky poacher and posted it here. It was not long before the MNR and OPP were calling. They do read this board every day.

I do not in any way suggest confrontation for those not experienced or comfortable with it. My job puts me in that position every day so I am pretty handy at settling issues quickly.

The police are obligated to answer calls. This was a physical and dangerous altercation and was indeed worthy of a 911 call.

    Well said Rick.

It doesn't matter what race any of the people involved were.

It was against the law and they should be held accountable.

And maybe a talking to from the cops will inform them that this behaviour is unacceptable and won't be tollerated.

  4. When I made my move to the NWT I brought my first load of stuff out with my 4X8 Casnadian Tire trailer with small tires 8" I think.

I had the trailer heavily loaded and had to drive 5500kms. I made sure to have 2 spares just in case. I had a blow out in Peace river Alberta (about 4500kms into the trip) and had a slow leak in the other overnight after I reached my destination.

I would go with the wider tires if they will fit without hitting the fenders, but you should be fine which ever you get.

Make sure you have a good spare and look after bearing maintenance.

  5. Agree with Dan, at least they were quick to protect the school.

Your tale is a sad comment on the state of our society. Not much you can do to change things beyond move to a safer locale.

    Like I did!!!!!!

I didn't feel like I was in danger, I just got tired of the increasing number of :asshat: in Southern Ontario.

Talk to your folks and let them know how you feel.

  6. Yea Off all week and this is the crappy weather i get

    weather.jpg

    :D Gone Fish'n

Yep, Wednesday and Thursday suck but the rest of the week looks good. B)

I moved up here to get away from that hot, humid weather as well as the polution in Toronto and surrounding area.

Nothing like driving to TO. from the North and seeing that beautiful brown haze covering the city. :D

It got to the point that I was having breathing problems because of the bad air.

I don't have that problem any more. :P

  7. I happen to like CTC. They have a decent selection of things and have some good sales.

I won't use their auto service though, mainly because I'm cheap and do my own work.

Labour rates in Yellowknife are off the chart!!!! The hourly rate at Canadian Tire is $120!!!!!! :w00t:

Much cheaper to do things your self, if you have the ability. :whistling:

When I need tires there is a local tire shop that is fair and family owned that gets my business. :thumbsup_anim:

  8. Optimas are AGM plus spiral cell technology. No water (maintenance), no leak, you can mount on side or even upside down. will not dislodge plates no matter how hard the pounding you put them through...(WAVE SMASHING)

Oh ya, each bank is separated to one battery. Wire each battery seaparatly to each bank on the charger. If you are running parellel, you have a 12 volt motor so your two trolling batteries will have a jumper wire junk to junk and neg to neg, the trolling motor can be hooked up to either battery like normal. The third charging bank leads extend down to your cranking battery.

    RR

Silly filter!!!!! it should read positive to positive!!!!

I don't think I would want to wire my junk to a battery!!!!!

I guess when you want to use the short form for positive you need to do it this way P0S using the number zero for the letter o.

  9. Listen both of you,

After over 40 years of chasing chrome, specks and browns, the cure to this is simple..... and now listen carefully staying single and healthy are a must.

Single for the plaine and simple rule you go when you want come back when you want if you say to the sugnificant other that you will be back at x hour and you show up at x hour + 5 min. you are in the dog house.

Now staying healthy does help, again I am speaking from experience, it sucks chasing bows with a blown knee.

The only thing that makes things worse is really knowing that the fishing is good and not being able to partake.

    YEP!!!!

  10. yeah but your still grillin right drifter?? :P

    You know it Blaque!!!

    I'm out grilling when it's -60!!!!!

Nothing like Texas Trout done on the BBQ. Grilled up nice with liquid smoke, texmex, spicy mesquite and smoky mesquite seasoning. MMMMMMMMMM food.giffood.giffood.gif

  11. I like it!!!!! :clapping::clapping:

As soon as I saw that I said to my self, some Bill's or Packer's fan came up with that.

They're a wee bit spendy at $400 US though. :w00t:
