  1. I hear that, but I doubt the military is interested in marketing their batteries and I have a little suspicion there not the same as over the counter batteries where the share holders continue to make cheaper products with more gimmick marketing every year to squeeze another penny of profit while products continue to get worse. The only true way is to try both in the same environment which is what I've done and found no difference thus the reason I don't waste my money on the optimas, then again my boat has no tracks. I do agree some batteries are better than others you just have to try them yourself I guess is the only way.

Personally I run Nautilus lead acid batteries (group 27's for the TM and a group 24 for the starting battery) and they perform fine as I said.

Nautilus also has a spiral wound battery (which is quite a bit less $$$ than the Optimas)

Personally if I were the OP I would move his batteries to the back and move the fuel forward if I could (to get weight forward). The I would just use regular Nautilus batteries.

  2. That's a good point Drifter never thought of that, however I'm not sure on the science or proof behind it because I always have mine up front bouncing around (only place I have room) and it hasn't effected them one bit judging how there on their fourth year and the last set went 5 years as well I've had optima that did no better. Marketing is nuts, they can toss graphs, statistics and paper work all around but it doesn't mean anything usually, the old selling ice to an eskimo theory. Not saying your wrong but I don't belive the hype.

Spiral wound AGM batteries were developed for the military to deal with vibration failures they were seeing in severe duty. They were designed for the likes of tanks and other extreme vibration enviroments.

Whether the available civilian models are as robust is any one's guess, but they have been touted as more vibration resistant than regular lead/acid batteries.

It would suck to have your battery cack out in the middle of a tank battle. whistling.gif

  3. The worst thing you can do is put the batteries in the front of the boat. Regular Lead/Acid batteries are killed by vibration. If you seriously want to keep your batteries up front pick up a spiral wound AGM battery (Optima or similar) as they have been designed to be used in severe vibration conditions.

My batteries are as far back in my boat as they can go in order to reduce the vibration transferred to them. I end up getting about 7 or 8 years out of a battery because of this and properly maintaing them.

  4. Sad news today with the death of 70's punk icon Poly Styrene.

    Rip Poly.

    Punk Icon dead at 53

Early punk icon Poly Styrene has died. She was only 53.

Poly Styrene, whose real name was Marianne Joan Elliott-Said, had been suffering from breast cancer that spread to her spine and lungs.

Of British and Somali heritage, she was born in 1957 in Bromley Kent. The story goes that she ran away from home at 15 with 3 pounds in her pocket and travelled around music festivals. Eventually, inspired by a Sex Pistols show, she founded the band X-Ray Spex when she was 18.

The band lasted from 1976-1979, during which time they released one album, 1978's Germ Free Adolescents and a few singles including Oh Bondage, Up Yours! and The Day the World Turned Day-Glo.

After X-Ray Specs split, she embarked on a solo career. Her last album Generation Indigo was released just last month.

She's often cited as an influence on women in rock music and the Riot Grrrl movement.

The Guardian reports that Poly stayed positive to the last, planning to make more music after she was cured. Fittingly, a statement on the singer's official website and Twitter feed said Tuesday that "the beautiful Poly Styrene, who has been a true fighter, won her battle on Monday evening to go to higher places."

The Canadian Press reports that Poly once told the BBC in an interview she would like to be remembered for something spiritual, but "I know I'll probably be remembered for 'Oh Bondage, Up Yours!'"

Boy George took to Twitter to write, "Boy George was among those paying tribute on Twitter, writing, "Oh bless you Poly you will be missed! Legend!"

Poly Styrene is survived by her daughter, Celeste Bell-Dos Santos, who fronts the band Debutant Disco.

  5. I don`t know the layout of your house, bedrooms how many occupants etc. but you might want to investigate a airsource heatpump the technology has come a long way.

We put one in this past December and I love it.

I agree and if you are on a rural lot a ground source heat pump is even more efficient. Out last house in Grand Valley had a water to water ground source heat pump and it was excellent and quite cheap to run. Our place was a 2800 sq ft raised bungalow and it cost less to heat than the 1500 sq ft 2 storey on natural gas we had in the city before.

They are more expensive up front but they can save 15%-30% (average) on heating costs every year.

You can also take solice in the fact that you will be reducing your carbon footprint as well. ;)

If this is not in the cards then I would make the switch to propane or if available natural gas.
