  1. i was camping in killbear about 2 weeks ago. the fishing really sucked. we fished both georgian bay and a small lake on the way to the park, and didn't get a single fish. perhaps it was the timing, cause it was right after some heavy rain. we did see one guy pull out a nice pike with a trailing pike that was never caught at Blind Bay (where we stayed). we rented canoes from the detour store and canoed the small bay at kilcoursie and also raby lake or something like that... on the way to the park.
  2. no one? i'll be leaving tomorrow morning and will definitely be posting up a report when i get back
  3. that's an amazing write up with awesome pics too. if i ever get into carping again, i'm coming straight to you.
  4. So, my girlfriend has decided we should go cottaging around the Sandbanks area before the start of the school year. She booked the place for a few days and we'll be enjoying the beaches, scenery, hikes, and most importantly, some fishing. I've been to West Lake before, but this was way back in the day. I'm interested in knowing where I could rent from and which places people prefer. Should I be spending more time on East or West? I'm thinking I'll have a better time at West, but I'm really not sure. Any particular good places to try? I'll probably be targetting whatever I can catch... pike, walleyes, bass, crappies. ...I'm in serious need of getting into a couple fish, after getting skunked at Port Hope and again at Scugog . Thanks in advance!
  5. maybe it's just me, but i think that's a sucker, no? great job though! funny how you said you sent her away to get worms haha
  6. I got a 120 gallon long with asian red arowana, black arowana, flagtail, various polypterus and a synodontis occelifer here's some pics of that tank http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/s...light=chili+red Then, I got a 90 gallon all male African cichlid show tank. Then a 75 gallon turtle tank and finally a 35 gallon Mbuna cichlid tank... These are just fish and turtles hahaa, not including my other reptile tanks!
  7. beautiful pictures. sorry to hear about the bad neighbours though. may i ask what kind of camera you were using on your trip?
  8. was not anglers retreat. it was whispering pines next to serpent mounds near town of Keene. owner is great! very friendly and helpful.
  9. thanks guys for all the comments. any particular spots on the lake that produce walleye? i'm thinking mouth of the otonabee? how about muskies? or is it mostly all by chance? fish of a thousand casts?
  10. Being a shore fisherman for most, if not all of my life, I decided to give boating a shot and fish an open lake. Decided upon Rice Lake as a starter lake since upon doing some research, it's pretty productive and not many hazards as well. Yesterday (Aug. 12th), we got to the boat rental around 7:30 AM and couldn't ask for any better conditions. Nice warm sun, and a slight cool breeze. Asked the owner of the place for some good spots to try out and he pointed us in the direction where there have been lots of success lately. We then ventured off to the desired spot and started to chuck some lures for a bit. As time went by, it started to get busy....REALLY busy... probably close to a dozen boats all clumped together, fishing this particular spot. So, me and the GF decided to venture off and head for some other water where no one else was. We decided to try and hit some walleyes fishing deeper water out in the open. Out towards the middle of the lake, the water was a lot more choppy and we drifted quickly.... didn't feel like anchoring, so I just decide to let the wind/current carry us to wherever. We jigged along the bottom for a few minutes and I land the first fish of the trip. Back in the water she goes Soon after, my gf lands a nice slab! I then instantly get another hit, and I knew that we had hit a school of some pretty decent crappies! We continue to land about half a dozen of these delicious fish but soon drift out of the school and we didnt' catch any more for the rest of the day. We kept these guys for dinner After this point, it was just drifting. We actually anchored one time, but found it was harder to fish just one area exclusively, so we just drifted around most of the day. We continue to catch a lot of bass. It kinda sucked and got me bummed out that most of the larger fish kept clearing the water and shaking the hook off though, but the consistent action kept me happy. My gf actually hooked into something that was crazy... sliced through 8lb mono that we were using... muskie perhaps? I also lost a little walleye at boatside. This is the big fish of the day, a couple ounces under 3 lbs. Lost one bigger than him though . Then the weather turned for teh worse. It got dark, windy and wet. We were getting poured on and we decided to head home. By the time we got back to the dock, we were completely soaked. Dinner from the crappie I brought home. Delicious. All in all, it was a great time out on the water for the first time and will definitely be doing this again soon. This lake seems full of fish!
  11. awesome apistogrammas!!! i used to be into them, but that phase ended a while ago. right now i have a 90 gallon Malawi male show tank and a 120 gallon long tank with a chili red arowana, black arowana, flagtail, various polypterus species and a synodontis ocellifer.
  12. nice report! those look like bufo americanus (american toad) tadpoles! they metamorphose quite quickly and also do well on boiled spinach or you can just use some algae pulled from local ponds/lakes. you'll have tiny toads in no time
  13. wow...that is amazing. do not let anyone know of this little lake... would love to see pics of this 16+ incher... only in my dreams will i ever see one over 15 haha.
  14. I have noticed that there are some colour differences in crappie as well. I usually get VERY dark black ones once in a while. I also assume these to be males. Only way to tell would be to clean them and look for ovaries or testes. But usually once they die, the black ones tend to lose the colour.
  15. Thanks guys! and I most likely will be heading up for some walleye. hopefully there won't be too much of a crowd.
  16. I had to start her off with small panfish...then it went to lipping some big bass...now it's handling longer fish you can't lip... Funny thing though...she can handle the live fish no problem but totally freaked out and ran away when she snagged a HUGE dead carp. The thing must've weighed like 20lbs. I am unsure of it's cause of death...old age? Looked pretty fresh to me. She can't handle dead fish haha. Gotta start making some dough soon, so not many more of these trips.
  17. I got the stradic during BPS's spring sale event. Traded in a old reel and a got a sweet deal on it. Had to pay separate for the rod though. Shimano Compre...got a free hat at least
  18. So, after the awesome day out two days ago, my girlfriend and I decided to head back and try for some more. Decided not to go so early this time and head during the afternoon when the fish were more aggressive anyways. When we finally made it to the island, I was pretty surprised that there were sooo many people fishing. For some reason, I kinda felt that the fishing wasn't going to be as good. With people fishing on both sides of almost all the canals, felt like the pressure was up there. We start casting with the same setup as the first time out, but this time with leaders. The black leaders really stood out, so I was worried that the fish would see this and not take or follow as readily. Was proven wrong though as after 15 minutes in, my gf gets a nice hit and brings the pike in. It however does a little flip before we're able to land it, shaking the lure off. Was a little guy, so it saved us the trouble. A little while later, I soon get a hit and pull one in... nice way to start the day. Couple casts later, another one! It was hooked very slightly, so I just brought it in and took the lure out with fish still in water. It was really an awesome day weatherwise, which could possibly be the reason why so many people were out. Lots of cool wildlife to be seen as well. Lots of geese getting busy with the little ones. And I thought that racoons living in tree trunks were just seen in cartoons or whatever...it was so cool hahaha. I soon land another one. Biggest for me for the day at 27" and 4 lbs. After releasing the fish, my gf screams that she's got one on too, so I go and help her out. She was on a role cause after like 2 minutes, shes' got something HUGE on... I could see that it fought like a monster. It was a while before the fish actually surfaced showing itself. Biggest one I have ever seen. BOWFIN!! 27" and 6 lbs even. Such a cool prehistoric fish. I land one more before we call it a day. All in all, I would say that it was another great day and a cool unique fish as well!
  19. thanks... i will look into them tomorrow before heading down if i do decide to go.
