  1. I caught that show once at my friends place( I don't get WFN with stupid Cogeco in Hamilton ). Anyhoo, I actually liked it! Then again, we did have a few beverages that probably hightened the viewing experience.

I thought the competition was pretty interesting but definately NOT a fun way to carp fish with those crazy poles!

  2. Always enjoy your river reports and pics, Tbay. Well done once again! Some real purdy Smallies there.

Question when you are tubing. Any special way you rig your tubes for the river? Do you rig em with a regular tube jig or do you go weedless? I pretty much always rig 'em weedless, myself. I jam in a small bullet sinker with the size dependent on depth and current, etc ). Curious as to what you guys do.

Anyhoo, thanks for the detail in your reports too. I had a bunch of chores piling up on me so I couldn't get out this weekend so I have to live vicariously through your river adventures!

    lol

  3. ...I am sure if I could get her on a decent sized fish her attitude may change considerably.

Yikes, I dunno Guppy. It sounds like it'll take a lot more than that to turn your wife around about fishing. How 'bout you just do the wine tour thing with her all weekend and use it as 'brownie points' for the things you wanna do like go fishing.

  4. You got sick of cut throat trout fishing and was glad to get into a some pike??? Wow SFF, that may have been the only time those words were ever spoken! LOL Ya, it's funny what you can get used to, eh?

Anyhoo, if you like river fishing you're in a really good spot. The Grand River and it's tributaries( Speed, Conestogo and Nith to name a few )have it all. Smallmouth, largemouth, pike and panfish, even some Browns in the Grand just north of you.

Google Maps is pretty much what I use these days. Find where the rivers intersect roads and you can almost always find a spot to pull over and fish. It's really that simple. I like fishing bridge abutments, culverts, anything that channels and funnels the water one way or the other. Something the creates current or breaks it.

Waders are essential because you'll want to move around as the fish do. With flucuating water levels, where they were one week will not be where they are the next. Then again, if you're a Western trout fisherman, you already know all this.

I'll find Pike in slower stretches while the bass tend to hold in the runs just down from the ripples. If you find some bolders or rocks, all the better when it comes to the smallies. I love fishing both the runs and the pools just down from the shallow ripples. The water down from these shallow ripples or rapids tend to hold fish like a dam.

Puslinch Lake has some bass, pike and I think still a few walleye( ? )but my understanding is that there is no shore access but there is a boat launch at the Marina restaurant. Someone more familiar with the lake can help you with this.

Have fun exploring and welcome to Ontario and to the board!

  5. "...Silver Asian carp were first imported to the United States in the 1970s. Catfish farmers brought them in to remove algae and other suspended matter from their ponds. The Environmental Protection Agency started a program allowing cities to use the fish to help clean the water in sewer-treatment plant ponds."

And they escaped to now threaten eco systems throught the US and Canada. Gee, couldn't have seen that one coming...

  6. Sounds like a good day. I think you'll really like the St. Croix. I bought the exact same rod at the start of year, mostly with the idea of using it for bass fishing the Grand, plus other similar rivers, and it's been great. It's also worked well for me casting for browns in the upper grand too.

Nice to know I made a good choice. Unlike the boat guys, us river rats have to go with one rod in hand and we ask it to do a lot of different things. Kinda like making a golfer play with one club! lol

  7. awesome day on the water dude - I didn't know mooneye were readily available!

    cheers,

    UF

Ya, some flyfishers like heading to Caledonia to fish for 'em apparently 'cuz they're fun on the fly. They kinda remind me of saltwater fish( jacks or snapper )with that real silvery sheen and flat body.

And thanks for all the comments guys.

  8. Although I never get as far upstream as Guelph, I can tell you there's good Smallie fishing on the Speed around the Cambridge area. Lots of Carp and some Pike in the system as well, plus lots of panfish.

You'll probably have a blast exploring 'cuz it sounds like a lot of the river is accessible up your way.

I'd just remember to bring a bit of everything with you. My wading vest is pretty packed with a few spinners, tubes, Rapalas and floats. It really amazes me how many times I can be working a hole with no results and once I change presentations, bang!

Goodluck with the fishing and with school, Kemp.

  9. When you get a beauty day like today in September, it's a shame to have to work! So I took a vacation day to do a little fishing on the Grand in the Caledonia area.

Made it for sun up, jumped into the waders and way I went.

Pretty much had the river all to myself this morning, too, other than this guy.

Although I think I liked his company more than he liked mine.

Got to debut my new rod today too. Picked up a StCroix 7-foot Premium Series rod they rate medium-lite power and fast action. It's gotta be able to do a lot of things well on the river from casting spinners to dragging tubes to float fishing, etc. Pretty much whatever the bass are in the mood for. I'm pretty happy with its versatility cuz I did have to try a little bit of everything today.

Missed a few with the spinners and tubes so I stared floating worms past their noses and got into a few.

They didn't get much over a foot today but they were plentyful and I managed about 8 or so.

    gallery_35_528_30022.jpg

They were a scrappy lot this morning and when they weren't jumping, they'd just dig into that current and give you a good little scrap.

As the sun went higher, the bass bite died off but the Mooneye began to hit and I was able to catch a couple of them too.

Another highlight of the day was watching an Osprey working the water just down stream from me. Man, those things are huge and watching 'em dive into the water after their meal is really a thrill.

A good day today and maybe I'll have to take tomorrow off too!

  10. I was at the game yesterday and the prior tale gate. A great time and a great game, which didn't do too well for us Ti-Cat fans. It was a close one and almost won 3 straight agains the Argos. Ya, the Cats are having another terrible season, but the Blue and White are really not too much better. Montreal wins the division by default.

  11. Stopped by a KW area trib of the Grand River yesterday afternoon to try my luck wading for Smallies. Started pitching my Mepps spinners but the only takers were the Rock Bass( and plenty of 'em ).

So I switch up to tubes( white )and started working the same areas( just way slower )and that's when I started to connected. These weren't the same crazy jumping Smallies of a few weeks ago. They pretty much stayed down in the water and gave a good account of themselves in the current. Also they were not as aggressive and striking short. I wasn't able to bring any in 'til I set the hook way back into the tentacles of the tube.

Caught 4 smallies between 12 and 15 1/2 inches. This was the day's biggun.

    gallery_35_513_27889.jpg

    And away she went.

    gallery_35_513_2006.jpg

One of the bass spit up a bunch of pale crayfish which confirmed why the white tube was such a good choice. Working 'em slowly around the rocks did the trick.

Hope everyone has a great Labour Day weekend!
