  1. Sorry 'bout them not honouring your phone-in prize win, Bassman. That's pretty bush.

That radio show or theirs is tough to listen to. Funny, but sometimes I catch it Saturday mornings on my way to my fishing spots. You'd think it would be great listening to a fishing show on the way to doing some fishing but the show itself is terrible.

The inane, non-sensical banter usually makes me shut it off about half way through. Aweful!

I DO like their TV work though( now that they've stopped doing that juvenile stuff )and do enjoy catching it when I can.

  2. I fished Kashwakamac several years ago and stayed at a friends cottage. It was a terrific time on a beautiful lake in the middle of summer, as I recall.

Jigs with white twister tail grubs caught us a good meal of walleye the one day and the next day we hooked into a few smallies and a pike.

Really enjoyed the fishing and scenery.

  3. When somebody poses as someone else( Andy Rooney )and then makes a pile of statements about race and religion, I question the movitves of that individual.

Regardless or whether you feel those points are true or not, the person making 'em is pretty sketchy and I don't like to give them too much credit for their views.

    But that's me.

  4. Wow, what a spectacle an event like that would be!

I can see it now; hundreds of spectators gather by the shoreline, the national anthem being played and then the shotgun start with all the competitors blasting off at the same time paddling off in quest of the Kings.

I'm only a canoeist and wouldn't participate myself, but I gotta say, I'd probably travel out to an event like that just to do a little casting from shore myslef, catch the blast off and see some of the weight in.

I think if there's enough participation by the competitors, sponsors and if it's promoted locally to the general population, it could be a really cool thing.

Call the media and you'll get a lot of news coverage just because of the uniqueness of the event.

    Just my 2 cents.

  5. Ya, the fear part comes from trying to land a pike on perch gear. I know it happens to a lot of guys who like perching and you hold your breath when Mr. Pike grabs on and you hope that everything just works out. I know it was the largest fish I landed on the lightest line( 3 1/2 pound test )which is where the fear part came in. LOL Thanks for the comments!

  6. Nice job on that beauty Bow and the jig!

Must be really satisfying to not only hook into fish like that with the conditions at this time of year, but to be able to trick 'em with something you tied yourself.. well that's like the icing on the cake.

Thanks for the post and pics!

  7. Well, my buds and I took the day off work yesterday and headed to Gilford to do a little perch fishing. We booked a hut with Terry Goy( Blue Huts )and were doing quite well first thing in the morning with lots of bites a couple dozen perch iced within the first hour or two.

My favorite presentation took most of the morning's catch.

The bite slowed to a trickle and for several hours we had nothing.. zip.. nadda.

We wondered if they had moved on, developed lock-jaw or perhaps a pike had come by for a visit. Well, we soon had our answer when my little St. Croix perch stick almost bends in two and reel starts to scream with a sizeable fish on!

After a couple runs, I coax him to the hole and my buds an I see Mr. Pike. He takes one look at us and starts another run and my heart is in my throat. After bringing him back to the hole( which seemed way too small )and gently lifting his head upwards, I see my little #2 jigging Rap hooked on the edge of it's mouth and luckly none of my 3 1/2 pound Berkeley Micro Ice mono had come near his teeth.

Reaching down the hole, I placed my hand under it's gill plate and hauled him out.

Well, that just made our trip. I'll leave you with a few of my favorite images from this winter's Gilford outings.

  8. ...It is getting harder and harder to find good spots to fish from shore, once word gets out that a spot is producing it usually ends up being so crowded that you can't fish it properly or people leave enough of a mess behind that the access gets closed down.

True enough Big Cliff. I do a lot of my fishing from the shore and wading rivers and I gotta say that us shore guys are getting as tight lipped about our spots as brook trout guys are about their honey holes.

And it's as you said, with limited shore access and the 'power of the internet,' it doesn't take long for these places to get crowed with shoulder to shoulder fishing.

The neat thing is we can still talk about shore fishing techniques and tactics, and still have valuable information that someone can apply in their area. Keeps the posts interesting and relevant to board members.

  9. Welcome to the board Mark! I'm from Hamilton too and enjoy fishing those giants we have in the harbour.

Oh, and check out the posts by Rich when you get a chance. You'll see how ya don't have to put away your carp gear in the winter!

    Cheers!

  10. And regarding bridges, don't forget to fish the water directly infront of the abutments. When the current reaches an abutment, the water splits before it travels down each side of the abutment which actually creates a small area of slack water that fish can be holding in.

  11. Welcome to the board, Livinisfishin.

I think most urban areas have pretty good shore fishing and not very many fisherman. In Hamilton, our harbour has lots of shore access and you always have a chance at some bass and panfish when you move around and work the shoreline.

I just saw a show( 'Lunkerville' ), where the host took the New York city subway and went to Central Park and hooked into some beauty bass. Man, if you can find bass in THAT urban area, you can find 'em anywhere!

I think, though, if you just add a good pair of waders to your fishing arsenal, you multiply the fishable waters you can get to considerably and really increase you chances at finding fish.

    Cheers!
