  1. now that this has happened it will be interesting to see if the rainbows rebound??? i know there has been a private study going on at a river that has absolutely No fishing pressure and the rainbows have been declining cause they have been killed or eaten in the lake NOT in the river

No doubt we will see higher returns almost immediately, but that's not to say that more people won't be bonking fish at the river that they normally would have taken in the lake. The kill on the rivers lately has been crazy, seems like 3 fish bonked for every 1 released.

At the end of they day, educating people on sustainable harvest is the best option. Until we can dispose of the Neanderthal gene that leads us to indiscriminately smash everything that swims over the head with a stick limit changes like this will have to do.

  2. Exactly what I was thinking. Why would an earlier bass season be encouraged in obviously colder waters than we have in the southernmost part of canada?

I have no knowledge of how/where these changes start, but I would take a shot in the dark and say its possible that pressure from lodge/resort owners in our area got the ball rolling? Bass season is bread and butter for them...

  3. my problem here isn't the knot, it's the use of 3 lines. just one more spot to fail if you think about it...

I used to think so too - but I made the switch and haven't looked back.

14lb Nanofil, to 12lb Ultragreen, to 6-10 lb lead. With line like Nanofil I need that shot line to soak up some of the shock from a hookset or miss-cue on my part.

Also nice to eliminate all line twist with the swivel above and below the float. Only time it becomes a problem is in deep water where I need to have more that say 10-12 feet between the top swivel and the bait.

  4. Belair Direct is the only insurance company that young drivers can even afford to call for a quote.

When I bought my first car they came in at more than $1000/year less than the next guy.

I've been driving 6 years, 4 with my own car and have a totally clean record. I pay $115/mo - which isn't so bad when I hear what most of my buddies are paying...

  5. What exactly are you worried about happening? :dunno:

The few people that actually keep bass up there will now have an opportunity to legally possess more [as if that mattered anyway] without a seasonal size restriction. Bring it on down to zone 11!

Would hate to see it set any kind of precedent for zones that couldn't support that type of pressure.

Like I said, good luck eliminating that bass population with anything short of a nuclear attack - but open season on bass in the Kawarthas and we would be fishing for nothing but zebra mussels in about a week and a half.

  6. Slippery slope guys - can you imagine the outcry if this same proposal was made for the Lake Ontario Salmon fishery? What about steelhead, those were introduced at one time too...

I'm not saying our blatant meddling with just about every body of water in the Country was right in the first place, but I have a hard time understanding how trying to reverse it by angler kill is the solution.

I also suspect that it would be exceedingly difficult to control the smallmouth bass population unless there is huge angler pressure.

  7. Hey OFC,

I'm trying to get a handle on the number and types of angler's/conservation groups that exist in the province (ideally the country), and I figured this would be as good a place as any to ask. I'm talking groups such as CRAA, Ontario Steelheaders, Muskies Canada, etc.

What groups do the members here belong to?

    Any help is appreciated.

    Cheers,

    Braden

  8. My fishing efforts are focused almost entirely on spring and fall steelhead lately, because that's when I have the time to get out. After banking a 37.5" fish two years ago I haven't come close to a PB in a while.

A couple fish in the low 30's, and one lost fish that would have been a close call PB but nothing on the bank.

  9. You don't wanna fish this line in below zero temps, ice in the guides will rip it to shreds! I also find after a while the first few feet will sink, I usually just cut it off and I'm back to mending like a champion!

Haven't had that problem Bill, what # are you running?

  10. Nanofil.

You can see it (if that's your thing, I don't think its useful), you can MEND it (this is very useful), it casts a mile, it floats, it doesn't stretch... should I go on?

Only downside is running a shotline. Not required but I find it to be helpful.

  11. It is quite noticible with larger reels under pressure (ie when fighting a fish).

A conventional rod will try to fall over towards the reel handle side due to the torque and top heavy weight of the reel. This issue disapears with a spiral wrap.

All of my rigger rods have been spiral wrapped since the earl 90's. It makes a big difference. ;)

Yup, on rigger rods I absolutely see the benefit.

  12. Makes a lot of sense on longer rods such as bait cast float setups or trolling sticks, but I'm not sure you are going to see a huge benefit on a lighter/shorter rod such as a dropshot setup.

I've always figured that the bumper guide probably places some undue stress on the blank as well. Realistically, the torsion on a bait cast setup is hardly noticeable.

That said, I'm a fan of building anything once - so give it a rip and let us know how it performs.

You will enjoy those guides, I put Batson components on all my rods.

  13. That's a lot to ask from a single rod.

"Float" rods are designed to allow for light leads, and pier chuckers aren't for the most part.

I'm not saying that the two are mutually exclusive, but if its at all in the budget you might consider two rods instead of one.

I have a stable of sticks, and probably could set you up with an entry level float rod for very cheap. PM me if you are interested.
