  1. Same here......my area is currently a mess lol. Thats why i placed it strategically in a inconspicuous area of the basement. Nobody sees it but me.

On a side note......Ya got me thinking

Wonder if static cling would be a good tool. Blow up a ballon, rub it up all good and get it charged, and just hover it over the desktop. It would pick up just the light feather waste and scrap threads, but wouldnt suck up any beads or other desirables that you dont want thrown away, like a vacuum would.

Take it outside and pop the balloon, disgard said balloon waste lol

    That's innovation at it's finest!

I wonder if it would pick up the heavier stuff that I use for tying spey flies...

  2. Like I said Kemper.. he lives right there.. and I'm sure knows the ice like the back of his hand. Definitely not a first time crossing, just stepped in the wrong place Monday morning in the dark. 2 funerals attended, for 2 x 19 year olds in 2 weeks... is too much for this old guy!

Too much for any guy Irish.

  3. Rodbuilding.org has everything to help anyone learn the craft. Its a very informative site.

    Agreed.

Batson also has some informative videos on their site, as does Flexcoat.

The best way is to just start building, and make your first couple builds cheap because you are going to make some mistakes.

I'm really getting the hang of it now, and I'm finding the detail and finish quality comes with experience. Comparing the rod I'm working on right now (# 12) to the first one I built is like night and day.

If you want to learn really quick, I suggest badgering one of the gents on this site or others who have spent countless hours building hundreds (thousands?) of rods. Maybe you can convince someone to give you a personal lesson!

  4. If east Hamilton is convenient shoot me a PM.

Spiel is probably your man - I suspect he may even have the tip you need laying around...

My spare parts box is growing, but I imagine Spiel has a spare parts warehouse!

  5. I have a question for everyone....

I went out in my boat yesterday.... If I flipped and had to be rescued should I have to pay????

It was nice and warm and the launch was spotless...

However it was 32 degree water temps... And in a boat in January in Canada..... Ice flows coming down the river...

In many ways I was putting myself at a higher risk then during summer months... And many people said I was crazy....

What about all the boats on the Niagra most of the winter... Should they pay if they flip and need a life saving rescue..?????

Or superdad fishing 17 miles from the closest open launch in quinte...

Anglers pushing the limits and taking risks in their boats get a pat on the back but ice anglers are labeled as irresponsible undereducated idiots that should have to pay for getting into a bad situation....

I know if I pushed the limits and needed rescue I would hope that the tens of thousands of dollars I pay in taxes each year would have covered me... Considering my community has spent millions in the past few years on hockey rinks and a curling club ill probably never use... I think the occasional rescue for outdoorsman should be covered.... If not... Where the heck do my tax dollars go... To the hockey rink for my neighbors to enjoy...? And I get bupkis....? That doesn't seem right to me...

I don't complain about paying taxes and insurance out the nose... But I'd like to think that the one time I might have to cash in on services and equipment I've paid for with my tax dollars my whole life... That I wouldn't have to REPAY for what I've already paid for...

    Mike

I would think there is a much higher risk of going through crap ice on a warm rainy day then of flipping your boat...

Of course people head out in 12' tinnys on the big lake in January, and I think that's pretty stupid as well (in most cases).

  6. Maybe they are rookie fisherman and read on a fishing board that people were fishing there so they made a drive north to fish and just figured the ice was safe?. I have met lots of people on the ice that say they read these different fishing boards but never sign up. I figure if your too lazy to sign up to the fishing boards then you dont deserve to read the valuable information thats posted inside. Most of the boards I visit have way more guests and visitors than members checking out the threads.

If you rely on the internet to tell you if the ice is safe or not, you're still an idiot for going swimming in that type of weather/ice conditions.

  7. True enough... but in quest of a fish we.. okay some I go fishing with.. push our luck at times and could be swimmers on many given days. Even during great cold winters... swimming is just a vent hole away.

No doubt about that, but I prefer to at least eliminate the risk of "died of pure stupidity" from my fishing mishap list.

Of course I could step onto an inconsistent patch and drown even on good ice, but hopefully the chances are much lower.

  8. Say all you want guys... there are many of us here, me included, that this could (or has) happen(ed) to at any given time. Make sure you speak up and come clean when you get wet !

I agree that no ice is safe and anything can happen, but to me there is a difference between a freak accident and plain old stupidity. Seems like anyone with half a brain should have been able to figure out that ice that already wasn't safe probably didn't get any better with this weather.

I don't get it, continues to happen again and again.
