  1. Blew a tire 2 weeks ago just after I got off the Church St ramp on the way to the boat launch....not good but I was well prepared......I even had some orange collapsible cones to set out to protect me from all the nuts speeding to work...

Looked up the receipt to find I had them there CAR tires (radials) on my trailer for 12.5 years and now Sam's Club no longer carries that size (175/80/13). I called around and around and no one had them but they insisted a trailer tire was better for my applications (they cost a LOT more per tire). But then I remembered Mr Fox Tire in Buffalo that sells just about any tire you need including used tires (that's where I got my spare). Told the guy on the phone what I wanted and said can you get me anything close to what I need in a car tire that has a load rating of at least 1179 lbs....he said "I have 4 different manufactures of the 175/80/13 tires you're looking for"....cheapest cost $34.99 with mounting included.....I hopped into my Tundra and got them mounted and balance and new valve stems to boot.

So Sam's Club charged me $28.99 12.5 years ago and I got them replaced for only $6 more per tire....COLOR ME HAPPY.... :thumbsup_anim:

Moral of the story: you don't always need trailer tires at trailer tire prices if you can get a car tire with the proper load range to handle your boat.

With a light load you can get away with doing the wrong thing but as a rule use the correct tire they are made entirely different and if you have a blowout and go for an insurance claim it can be denied.

Here is a laymans guide to the difference between road tires and trailer tires. (Cut and pasted from Taskmaster)

Special Trailer Tires Vs Passenger Tires

There are distinct differences in the way passenger tires and trailer tires are

designed, engineered, and constructed. There are also differences in the service

requirements between the tires on your car or truck and those on your trailer.

Traction, or grip, is a key element in the design of passenger tires. Traction

moves your car or truck down the road. Traction allows you to stop, turn and

swerve, and traction also gives you the ability to tow your trailer. Another

important consideration in passenger tire design is “ride”. Ride, traction, and

handling are all achieved in passenger tire designs by adding flex in the sidewall.

By making the sidewall more flexible, tire engineers maximize tread contact with

the road, thus increasing traction and allowing the driver to maintain better

    control over the vehicle.

Traction is only a factor on trailers equipped with brakes, during braking

operations, because trailers are followers. In fact, sidewall flexing in a trailer

    application is a negative. Sidewall flexing on trailers carrying heavy loads;

trailers with high vertical side loads (enclosed/travel trailers); or trailers with light

tongue weights, is a primary cause of trailer sway. Automotive radial tires with

their flexible sidewalls notably accentuate trailer sway problems. The stiffer

sidewalls and higher operating pressures common with Special Trailer (ST) tires

helps control and reduce the occurrence of trailer sway. Bottom line, trailers are

more stable and pull better on tires designed specifically for trailer use.

For trailer use, it is important to match the tires to the application and payload.

Since Special Trailer (ST) tires are constructed with more and heavier materials,

they are tougher and more bruise resistant than typical passenger tires. This is a

plus because trailer suspension systems are generally stiffer and less

sophisticated than automotive suspension systems. A tire designed to operate in

the more demanding trailer environment will provide end users a longer service

life and withstand the added abuse tires on a trailer experience.

Bias ply Special Trailer tire technology has been moving trailers around America

for nearly 30 years, and more recently, the ST Radial arrived on the scene

providing the same durability and dependability in a radial trailer tire. For many

trailer buyers, tire decisions are purely price based. The allure of an equal price

and the word “radial” for that price draws some customers to the passenger tire.

Taskmaster hopes this explanation of the differences will help you make a more

informed decision on your next trailer tire purchase.

  2. Paul it is an indication that the transducer has sent out a signal and not received or understood the reflection. With a soft rag with soap and water wash the face of the transducer. Check that the transducer is level with the boat and facing 90 degrees while sitting in the water. Clean the contacts between the transducer and the monitor unit. You also might notice that you lose the bottom when you are traveling at a faster speed if that is the case then the transducer needs to be moved to a new location. The final thing is when it starts flashing see if it is a consistent number it flashes in rare cases I have seen were the head unit has a glitch and need to be refreshed from the download site of lowrance.

  3. Since it brings in a little money to pay for the bandwidth and software it is a small price to pay for a free members forum. I would actually vote for a few more ads if it would fund something for all of the time the mods put into this place. Since that will not happen I guess they will have to make do with a Thanks for a good job and a hearty handshake.

  4. Another welcome outcome much like the Sea Lamprey.Typical of the Obama administration it takes that idiot 4hrs to decide what pair of pants to put on in the morning. This Asian carp deal is just sad and pathetic,it was so easy to stop this threat.

Yea that danged Obama...NOT that this issue was well in place before him. While you hold no respect for The President Of The United States the opinion you have stated is called Flaming and Bashing both are illegal on this Forum.Editing of your post will go far if you want to earn any respect from others reading your future posts.

  5. Your battery is not the same as a lithium battery it does not need to be discharged fully to correct a memory issue. A proper way to get the best life from the battery is to discharge it with your natural fishin trip and then recharge it as soon as you can with a 3 stage charger. A full battery does not have a negative chemical reaction going and does not shorten its life. Keeping the battery on an approved charger plugged in will keep it fully charged and ready for action.

  6. Hey Carol the life of a battery is shortened by being left in a discharged state and by shock and vibration. As mentioned the further back in the boat the batteries are the less pounding they will receive. That said the further away from the trolling motor the batteries are the heavier the wire needs to be to prevent excessive amp drop and heat. My batteries are 17ft away from the trolling motor and uses a #6 wire (about the size of your pinky) to prevent the issues of heat and amp drop. Most of the time my batteries are 4-6 years old before replacing them with fresh ones. The other death of a battery is leaving it in a discharged state. You need to get into the habit of every time you use the boat and get home plug in the charger before you go do anything else. My boats all have auto charge systems so it is get home plug them in and then forget about them till the next time I go fishing. Checking the fluids is vital to seeing what the health of your charger/batteries are. A charger that is malfunctioning will boil off the water in the batteries and in short time cook them so make sure your charger has a trickle charge sensor that will slow the charge rate as it becomes charged and cut off when it is fully charged.

  7. Might as well make the best of it. So, what's a good bait for Asian carp. :w00t:

Targeting a big game fish that's liable to jump out of the water and slap me sounds challenging.

I am having the same experience here with the snakeheads.Eight years ago they were released 4 years ago they are established 1 year ago I started fishing for them and now I prefer them over the bass. I am truly sorry they were added to our waters but since we don't as a rule eat bass or snakeheads it has proven to be a most worth adversary and the fight is outstanding. The doom and gloom that was expected has not shown up and it seem to be just another glitch in the food chain for us to use as sport or food if you want to eat such an ugly fish. :D

  8. who would actually look at what's become of the Mississippi fishery and call that a welcomed outcome?....

I understand what you're saying about other outcomes but I look at this a little differently....this fight is absolutely justified in my books....

Fight away when you finish give a shot at world peace both are noble neither are possible....

  9. doom and gloom, death and disaster..... aren't we tired of these stories yet? The deviation from a projected path does not always end in bad outcomes, it just means a different future occurs. The zebra mussels cleared up the water and the bass population thrived. The down side is the salmonoids suffered which one is more important? Ask the bass fisherman and he cheers...ask the salmon fisherman and it is the worst disaster in decades. The mistakes and victories of man in mixing different species have been documented with some amazing outcomes cold water fish transplants has brought Muskies in limited spring fed places to Virginia. The Florida strains of bass has allowed us to catch record sized bass that have bred with the Northern species and made them a hybrid that are being moved out West as we speak. The Peacock bass from the Amazon basin now can be caught inside of the USA it is all the fun with none of the downsides of back water vacations. Yes their is just as many examples of things going wrong but the truth of the matter in some cases is NO AMOUNT OF PREVENTATIVE WILL STOP THE CARP FROM ENTERING THE GREAT LAKES.It takes one instance of someone dumping a can of minnows from the local creek out in the lakes to bypass all of the millions of dollars spent preventing the spread. Not to mention the lost jobs and wages on both sides of the Boarder. The one thing I do know is I personally don't have the solution for this issue but since no one knows what the future holds neither does anyone else. Remember fighting the good fight is an admirable thing just make sure the fight is justified.

  10. Having never needed a cannonball does this sound like it would work?

Take a metal bowl and fill with 5# of lead and insert a dowel of wood in to the bowl middle let harden and remove wood. Repeat and do again and let both sides cool. Install eye bolt thru holes and bolt together. Smooth edge with torch or soldering iron. Paint with epoxy spray paint to seal lead from human contact. If you don't use the dowel of wood trying to drill the lead is difficult at best and usually seizes and breaks the bit unless you drill slow and clean the fluke frequently.

  11. Actually Roy will allow almost all statements to be made here however if you are going to throw a stone you better not be hypocritical of the subject. I applaud his efforts and other mods in filling in the gaps when people go over the line and post things that are meant to harm someones character.I am sorry that Mr. Blizzard lost his cousin and I understand and accept his apology however it is important for all of us to remember that words have consequences even in cyberspace in this case it is bringing up the past by Roy.

    Thanks Roy
