Terry has a valid test idea. I have a hds7 with an internal antenna that shoots thru an aluminum hard top and tempered 1989 glass. Some of the treatments to windows will block the signal.

What is the break-in period for my new four-stroke Yamaha Outboard?

New engines require a period of break-in to allow the mating surfaces of moving parts to mate evenly. Correct break-in, as described in your Owner’s Manual, will help your outboard provide proper performance and longer engine life. Yamaha’s four-stroke engines have a 10-hour break-in period as follows:

FOUR STROKE OUTBOARDS

Interval Procedure

1st Hour Operate the engine at varying speeds up to 2000 rpms or approximately 1/2 throttle.

2nd Hour Increase the engine speed until the boat is on plane (but avoid full throttle operaton) and then back off on the throttle while keeping the boat at a planing speed.

Next 8 Hours Run the engine at any speed however avoid operating at full throttle for more than 5 minutes at a time.

After the 1st 10 Hours Operate the engine normally.

The break-in maintenance is at 20 hours. For the 10 hours after the break-in and before the service you can operate the engine normally.

The 2000 and 3000 is the max rpm for the period. Varying the speed and the load is the key to breaking in the motor. Check the manual also to see if any additional lubrication is needed (if it is a 2 stroke). The oil used is a break in oil check before you remove it earlier than it should be. If you refill it with a thicker oil it might effect the remainder of the break in. I trust the engineers that decided the guidelines so stick with them to the letter and you should have a long and happy life with your motor.

Anybody know why Lund paints a black square on the transom where the motor is mounted?

It might be to hide staining from assorted motor liquids or exhaust gas from marking ????

However on your boat I am sure it was to hide the 4 great big holes they drilled wrong and had to patch....

I found hooking a strong line on it and then blasting down the lake at 50 or so gets them scales off too.

You can cover with straw also it will keep the birds from the seed and might be cheaper. I use bottle rockets with report to get rid of the birds here. I am not sure if/how hard it is to get up North.

If it is truly a pinhole you can inject it with superglue. If it is bigger than a pinhole then clean it out with a small drill bit and use fiberglass resin injected with a syringe and place a piece of plastic wrap over it to keep it from running out. Let dry and then remove plastic. Buff with sandpaper to remove all plastic. Any bigger then use fiberglass and resin as a normal repair. Sand and finish as needed.

As a note if the area is wet inside you need to use a hairdryer to dry the inside or the patches will not hold I also have had success with a monitored space heater.

Will you be trolling with the big motor? Do you run long distances while fishing? I like two strokes but in the same breath I have never had a 4 stroke O/B. For long runs the 4 stroke will be quieter. For trolling the 4 stroke will be happier. All of my two strokes are happier going in there sweet spot 5000 or 5500 rpms since it is the speed I am comfortable running it at from fishing hole to hole it fits my style. The 2 strokes have less moving parts are simpler to repair in my neck of the woods. While this is not an answer it is something to consider as you chose.

I lost a steel glove while releasing a big catfish. As I was reviving him he put on a burst of steam clamped down on my hand and started to swim off. I didn't want to go so I wiggled out of the glove and he took his trophy with him.

I've hooked myself twice. The first time grabbing a small pike by the back to unhook and he slipped and 3 trebles went into my hand as it shook around. Spiel and Crappiesteve yanked them out and cleaned me up in no time.

 

Second time I tried to flip a pike into the boat as we forgot the net. Just as it was over the boat it flipped off the homemade 5 odd bucktail I made and the line swung around and embedded itself into my upper arm so deep I could not move it or the tendons and nerves killed. Kevin at Lakair cut the hook. Misfish's wife Betty drove me to emerg and they gave me a local, made another incision and pushed the barb through and pulled it out.

I get to Canada once a year for 5 days and both times I was there now what are the odds???

I carry a hook remover kit and a pair of cutters that will cut any size hook I will be using that trip. I have also started to pack a can of dust off spray when turned upside down it will freeze the area used with care, you do not want to freeze the skin but it can numb it up for the time needed to remove the hook.
