i never fished Simcoe but maybe try using tubes? It's a slower presentation and it can get closer to the bottom-huggin fish.

i'm no expert though ...

i go to the university of waterloo so i'm living on campus right now .. however my rods/reels are in Toronto so i can't practice in here ... good luck though!

i'm also new to this baitcaster thing and seem to have a similar problem ... i can cast under hand (casting straight out or to my right) with some accuracy and without problem but when i try doing backhand (casting to my left) it just doesn't go where i want it to...

i have never done a canoe trip on the Grand but i have been fishing the bridgeport area quite a bit from shore lately. The water levels have been down low since mid May and hasn't gone up ...
