  1. And by Sludge and sediment, what I'm referring to is all the dirt within the oil that is too small for the filter to catch.. Warm oil picks it up and carries it out. Cold oil - the sludge is sitting on the bottom of the oil pan. But as I said before, if the manual has a specific procedure for changing oil, the by all means do as they say! An engine is an engine, but they are all designed a little different. And I agree with filters having a By-pass.. Most good filters have this feature. I may have been incorrect in saying the "filter" has the check valve, when it may be the engine itself having the check valve to hold the oil in the filter.. This feature is common on engines with filters orientated horizontally to prevent the oil from draining back all the way to the pan.
  2. Well I won't argue that point, if that's what the manual says, then I would follow the manual.. I'm a licensed Diesel mechanic so I'm not too educated on the specifics of marine 4 strokes. I would still drain the oil hot though! Just let it drain for an hour!!
  3. Last time I went fishing there in the fall the lake was gone!! I felt kinda foolish showing up at the launch with my BMT only to see a creek. Appairently they let the dam out... But that was a few years back so things may have changed.
  4. The purpose of warming the engine up before draining the oil is so: 1) the oil is warm and drains faster 2) the oil picks up the "sludge" and "sediments" and gets it out of the engine. Oil is designed to collect and suspend the dirt within it. By draining the oil cold, you are basically leaving the dirt inside the engine ( especially the metallic particles) I always drain oil when the engine is at operating temperature, always have, always will. Also, oil filters have check valves built into them so they Don't "drain out".. This prevents the engine from dry starts.. So once it has run once the oil stays in the filter.
  5. As a new owner of a Legend 16 Prosport, yes I'm a fan.. I do know it's not the "best" boat out there when compared to a Lund or Princecraft, but it is on par with makes such as Smokercraft ( same factory) Lowe, etc.. One feature that sold me was the 0.100" hull, which no one comes close to. If I were in the market for a full windshield boat I would consider the Legend Xcalibur With the folding rear seats which become a casting deck, definatly a nice feature that not many ( if any) other boats have. http://legendboats.com/en/view/boat/2011_16_xcalibur
  6. Lol, I get a kick outta that show... "choot im"
  7. I'm in Sudbury.. Off to Windy Lake in the morning!!
  8. Those numbers seem ok, ideal compression is 120+ , but anything over 90 is good.. If the compression is low, the motor won't troll very good.
  9. I would do everything your planning to do for storage, but would also remove the batteries and bring them home where they can stay warm.. I would also trickle charge them once a month and do not store them directly on a cement floor ( I've heard it's not good for them, but I don't know why!) let them sit on a piece of wood or off the floor on a shelf.
  10. Thanks for the offer, but it's kind of short notice!! I was planning on fishing Sunday though!
  11. Hello all, this will be one of my first threads as I have been lurking this forum for a few months.. I have been fishing since I was old enough to walk, but this year decided to step it up a notch by purchasing a new Legend Prosport 16 with a 30hp mercury 2 stroke.. Got really tired of having to fix things for 2 days prior to a fishing trip, only to have it not troll nice, or have to paddle back to shore. A blown piston on my 2000 Johnson 9.9 sealed the deal for my new purchase.. Anyway, enough about me... My question is, I notice alot of threads about fishing in Southern Ontario ( simcoe, quinte, etc.).. So how many forum members are from Northern ontario? Namely Sudbury, North Bay, Timmins..
  12. Travel mug and thermos for me!! I can make a whole pot of drip coffee faster than waiting in line at my local Tims ( possibly the slowest in the country) I do find that Mc D's coffee is better than Tims coffe though, and slightly cheaper.
  13. I'm in the toolbox club as well.. Using a humminbird 765 widescreen inside a cheap Canadian tire 16" plastic toolbox.. Also mounted a trailer breakaway battery from princess auto in there for power supply. I then went one step further and installed a cigarette lighter so I can plug in my gps and use the fishfinder battery.
