  1. 2 ways to look at it... In my opinion...

First 2-3-4 days of cold is a cold front... Wich shuts fish down.. Somewhere during day 4-5-6 I call it a cooling trend... And they start feeding up... Otherwise the next 3 months would be considered a cold front...

But during the first few days of cold it helps to slow down... And Downsize your lures.... Maybe even slip a bit deeper where temps are more stable... But be ready for the bite to come back strong.... Cause now they wanna start getting fat for winter....

    Yep, great point Mike!

When I'm looking for cold front walleye, I actually like to deadstick large minnows most of the time. If your on em, they will still bite, it's just not an aggressive bite

  2. 11% mortality vs. 0% mortality, live bait vs. artificial :whistling:

I read live bait vs spinnerbaits.

I could see that, cause with spinnerbaits you get a perfect hook almost evertime (in my experience). Almost always right through the lip, whereas livebait is sometimes swallowed.

Anyhow, awesome post/read. Thanks for sharing!

  3. Most times I'm fishing the same way I normally do. I only slow down my presentations if I'm not getting bit.

Water temps are 59 here and I'm still hitting bass/pike on topwaters fished really fast thumbsup_anim.gif

It was dead hot last week, water temps around 73-75. We had a big cold front (calling for frost tonight), and it dropped the water temps real fast.

I spose it depends on what/where your fishing, but to me, this means a real good bass bite, with all the big girls coming out to play!!!!

water temps around 55 mean shiner run around here, and that gets me excited!!!! Thats when all the walleye migrate back into the river, woohoooo!

  4. One of the best tasting fish recipes I have was Pickled Pike ... I have no idea how my buddy made it but I ate a ton of it ... hey said that the small Y bones actually disintegrate if done properly ... has anyone else had it ?

My neighbor does pickled pike every year. I drop off a few and he does em up for me while he does his. I'm not sure how he does it, but it makes for an awesome snack!

Also, a pike boil is great too. My Dad does it once in awhile, and it's a real treat. The meat is cubed, boiled in water or broth with carrots, celery, potatoes etc, not your everyday fish meal but it is awesome!

I use the 5 fillet method, very easy.

Pike is great, sweet meat. If I bread and fry it, I can't tell the difference between pike and walleye. But if I do it up in other ways, there is a noticeable difference. Not at all a bad thing either.

I like doing mine fairly naked. Just pressed in flour, add seasoning salt, some cracked black pepper, some onions and cayenne pepper. Then just a quick fry. The flour just keeps the meat together, and just some subtle flavors added to the already sweet pike meat.

  5. For big fish....

Troll CRANKBAITS... Not many walleye anglers can argue the fact that trolling cranks gets the highest average weight.... Can you get a pig on a little jig... Of course... Can you catch more on spinners/harnesses.... maybe...

But I know from experience.... That cranks catch bigger fish... On average...

And in the fall lindy style rigs with 5-7 inch minnows drifted beside weed beds gets the neutral fish to bite...

    Yep MM, thats the size!!!

It's hard to argue against it. On any body of water

  6. big swimbaits and fluke style baits. White is my favorite color. Strike King 7" Shadalicious are awesome in the sexyshad color. For flukes I'd use 5"-7 or maybe even 8" if ya have some, and rig em side ways

Spinnerbaits, 3/8oz - 1oz, black/silver willowleaf and chart/silver willowleaf blades are my favs, I use Strike King Pot Bellies

Northland tackle shakeyhead jigs with large senko style worms. Natural color or black/silver tail are my fav colors

Fall time for me means covering water aggressively with larger then average baits

  7. I don't see any reason this wouldn't taste good???

It doesn't sound like something I'd do all the time, but heck, how do you think amazing recipies are discovered? You gotta try, and nothing wrong with thinking outside the box.

Simliar to Dana, I've cooked lakers in brown sugar with a touch of syrup/butter, with just a lil pepper and it's unreal good.

Also, naked walleye cooked in butter, and seasoned with nothing other then seasoning salt, is great as well.

  8. hahaha, this report is awesome! Many thanks!

It put a smile on my face just because of how excited you are, and I feel excited for you!

Very nice smallmouth there, and as you learn a thing or two, youll absolutely catch much bigger bass, and have a great time doing it.

Thanks again dood, awesome catch, and awesome report!!!

  9. I'm not FN , I have many FNs buddies I totally understand and and relate

    .. Yep on that !

I don't think that his topic has anything to do with FNs .... Not a place to be jealous of othes or point fingers ... Except to those who do what they like , twist and disobey the written laws and worsten the fishery for others who care ...

    I agree RFS.

I'm not gonna derail the thread, I just thought that "Natives" and over harvesting comments to be off base and completely ignorant.

They have zero place in this thread, or on this site IMO.

There are good people, bad people, responsible and irresponsible, ignorant and knowledgeable, those that obey the laws and those that break them. For whatever reasons, right or wrong. Bringing up race is just not a noble front in my eyes, especially to justify your own (moxies) actions or beliefs.

To each their own, but what you get caught moxie, you'll have little support and nobody to blame but yourself.

I bet it be tough to fish with confiscated gear.... and where a topwater is referring to a poop that floats

  10. Too funny!!!! Because I live in southern Ontario I'll be driving up to and spending time on Kennebec Lake this weekend and I might or might not test out my silly and absurd practice but that all depends on my mental state. Heck I might even borrow a friends firearm and bag some wild game while I'm out there, with the outboard in the water to boot, or from my moving truck. If you must call the MNR they can reach me at 905-NICE-TRY. Way too funny folks.

Austerity is already here. I sure hope there is this much fight in you when there is no one to watch stocks. Wide brush stroke but I guess if we want fish we can always stand shoulder to shoulder with the Natives and they can show us a trick or two cause nothing seems to be illegal in that camp.

Regardless, A safe and fun filled Labor Day Weekend to all.

I'm not sure what natives your referring to? But my family, my friends, my first nations are more respectful of the fishery then they have to be, and much moreso then most anglers I witness on the water. We follow the laws, because its the right thing to do, and because I respect the fishery, as well as all the others that enjoy it.

I spend countless hours teaching the same philosophies to my children as well, for future generations, mine and yours.

To me thats a pretty generalized and offensive comment, and trying to justify your actions towards poaching, all the while lumpsumping humans, is pretty ignorant and downright rude.

I can see where your coming from, but the law is the law, and you are preaching your case to some VERY serious advocates of our ecosystem/fisheries on this site.

Thats just the way I feel... Take it as you will

  11. Most don't, really. But like a lot of other crazies they make noise out of all proportion to their numbers and get more attention than they deserve. What they deserve is zero.

Yeah, i didnt really mean it that way.

Still, trying to take away an accomplishment of that proportion is pretty crazy.

  12. That must be really tough to deal with. The fact that he (and his crew) accomplished something on that crazy of a scale. Only to have most people tell you it never happened.

He must have been very strong mentally to deal with that.

Regardless, condolences to the family and rest in peace

  13. Whereabouts are you located? Several of the lakes around here contain those fish but catching them is another story lol. I imagine I'll catch a 50" musky or 40" pike (had a big pike on earlier this year that got off boatside when I grabbed my net that had to have been close) before I catch a 30" walleye. I live right by the bay of Quinte but I'm such a walleye newbie too that I have no idea where to even start and I've only fished it a couple of times without success. I've been putting my time in for musky/pike this year but no big ones yet. It'll happen, hopefully sooner rather than later.

I'm on Rainy river between Rainy Lake and LOTW.

It's nearing fall time here, and it gets pretty crazy how big the migrating fish can be, and for a period of time, huge pike and walleye are super aggressive.

And LOTW had just insane amount of huge musky, always.

BOQ hey, yeah, just stay home and learn that water, lol. It shouldn't take you too long to get a walleye over 30"

  14. Realistic bucket list fish that I'm currently working on catching are a 50" musky, 40" pike and a 30" walleye.

    at least your being realistic!

Sounds like your bucket list involves lakes to visit, moreso then fish to catch. Head to my area, you might be able to scratch em all off in a few days

  15. manitobass2 it is a common misconception & I'm actually amazed it took so long before it was mentioned.

BTW: I've also been wrong before & was glad I was corrected with a proper link to confirm my mistake.

    Best Wishes: Rick

  16. Thats ok Rick, we all spew the bull sometimesw00t.gif ......It makes life interesting.

    thats true Paul, lol.

I'm not offended or anything, its not the first time I've been wrong, and I'm sure it won't be the last.

Learning is good, and so is the link provided! I'm thankful for that.

  17. I was waiting for someone to make that Bull comment.

Although CO's have wide latitude to search without warrant it does not include your home also known as a dwelling under the Ontario Fish & Wildlife Act.

Yes they will play off this common misconception to gain entry but they do not have that power.

    Read the actual Act.

    My link

    See: PART VIII - ENFORCEMENT

Good to know, thanks for the link!

    Sorry for my bull
