  1. You already have your dandelion problem cure and you're not using it.

Get out there and start picking kids; no supper until all I see is green. LOL

    Dan.

Yeah, I wish. I don't know about your area, but do you see how much homework kids get nowadays??? Plus we got soccer 4 nights per week. If were not doing those were usually out fishing, or cooking. Maybe when school is over I'll get my slave drive on.

My lawn looks amazing and I do two simple things starting in April.

#1, Fertilize while the grass is still brown and just starting to green up. Use a fertilizer with a high first number.

#2 Two weeks later when the grass is starting, over seed with good quality grass seed. Two weeks later over seed again.

The result is a very thick lawn that the weeds have a difficult time penetrating. I still have to pull a few weeds every week before I mow, but not too many. My neighbours all say that I have the nicest lawn around and ask what my secret is. Pretty simple eh?

I only use Scotts products which I purchase at Costco. My lawn is so thick that I have to raise my lawnmower higher until the summer heat kicks in and the growing season slows down.

I think thats what I'm gonna have to do, just focus on getting the grass thicker and healthier. I had mentioned we share a large lawn with other houses, and their yards have dandelion as well. So if I treat my lawn it's inevitable that I'll get more, unless my lawn is thick enough to withstand the constant barrage.

Thanks again everyone for all the input, very much appreciated! Here I thought I'd get like 2 posts in this thread, lol. Turns out there are alot of weedheads on this board talking bout grass!sarcasm.gif

  2. Actually when in Las Vegas, i visited a neighborhood and was amazed at some of the great ways to landscape without grass, and weeds.

    xeriscape_entry_garden_01.jpg

So your idea is great Dan. Just need some gravel and cacticlapping.gif No mere dandelions.

I'll take that house if we can relocate it to Ontariowhistling.gif

  3. if you live in farm country and you know a farmer ask him for some 2-4d it is one of the ingredients in weed killer it will kill your dandelions but not your clover or other "waxy weeds" if you want a good lawn in the spring and fall get together with your neibours and rent a core aratior and do your lawns... maintain your lawn at 2.5 inches or longer and never ever ever water at night or the evening water in the morning or even in the heat of the day as that is when the most damage can be done to your lawn, you will not burn the lawn but you will loose some to evaporation which means cooling ... 10 years in the business before the ban.... i have lots of the good stuff left.. and if you know the right farmer you can buy it

Sweet! I know alot of farmers in the area, I can at least ask around.

and lol@DanC's comment. I actually enjoy mowing my lawn though thumbsup_anim.gif When you got 6 kids thats 3 hours of a day that I have to myself, lol.

  4. BBs suggestions are useless unless you are willing to cross the border for the weed killers. You wont find those items available for sale here.

Weed-b-gone may work if its not too bad. Head over to a TSC near you and see if you can find the concentrated formula you dilute yourself. The stuff in the pre-mix bottles/sprayers is a bit of a waste of money (you're paying for water). If your neighbours lawns are filled with dandelions, it's a losing battle, the seeds will just blow in the wind right onto your lawn.

To clear a patch for my garden, I got a hold of farm grade Round Up and 2,4-d (you have to know a farmer to get this stuff) this year but this is not a selective herbicide (it kills everything including grass).

Going to the States is an option, I live 400 yards from the U.S. Border. I'm also in the middle of a farming community, so that may be an option as well

  5. thanks for the responses everyone.

BB, I might have to look at your suggestions.

I think for now, I'm going to use some weed-b-gone once or twice just for cosmetic purposes, and keep the kids off the lawn for a few days. I found one with iron as the ingredient, but I need to look into abit more.

Crappy thing is, we share a yard with like 6 other houses, its sort of an open field in the back, so were kinda damned regardless, cause they still have dandelions.

Overall Im gonna try to improve my grass, I think thats the best long term solution. Get some corn gluten and just keep feeding it, cutting it, and watering it.

My darned obsessive compulsiveness is gonna make this tough on me, lol. I could spend the next year digging them all out by hand and becoming obsessed with my lawn, lol

  6. I'm sure I'm not the only board member here that likes to have a nice lawn, so I'm looking for some input.

This year we had a huge bloom of dandelion in our yard, and we've never previously had them other then a few. Whats the best way to get rid of them without harming the lawn??? I should mention I have kids and ones just a lil toddler, loves rolling around in the grass. We also have dogs. So I don't want to use a bunch of super chemicals all over causing health issues.

Any thoughts/help are always appreciated thumbsup_anim.gif

  7. When I was a youngin around 8 years old, my Dad and his friend were trolling harnesses on a small lake for walleye. At that age I had no clue as to what I was doing (not really any better today, lol). Somehow, my line never even hit the water. After hours and hours, I had this burning sensation in my armpit, and I kept fiddling with it. My Dad asks to take a look, and the hook was imbedded into my armpit???? I don't recall how he got it out? and I probably don't want to know thumbsup_anim.gif.

Around age 22, me and two friends found ourselves stranded way up in the north arm of Rainy Lake. During a shorefish my buddy mishandled a decent size pike and it shook off, the treble hook went in deep into the web of his thumb. No other choice but to "punch" it through. After a few shots of the hard stuff, I nodded to my other buddy, and I punched him in the opposite arm. While he was distracted my other friend pulled the hook through. We cut the barb off and it slid out easily. He still tells of his warrior tale today, lol.

Thats it for me thank goodness. But I will say my glasses have been hit by others casting in the boat, numerous times. I always, always have my glasses on. Accidents happen, and heaven forbid anyone has a treble hook go through and into an eye

  8. I've seen lots of that myself :whistling: Lots of times, my reports gets viewed more then replied to (and this from other sites according to stats from my account on Photobucket :wallbash: ) and nothing I can do about it  Only other thing I can do, is try to produce a better report next time around.... but it's not always the case

Posting a report takes time and a lot of efforts to explain the details with pics but more so when you include a video :o god knows I tried many times :o but sometimes the choice of music is not appreciated :( and fully understand ;) I'm kind of an off the wall type kind of music listener... my reportoir is unusual

I don't think this site need change but a simple acknowledgement from any member browsing any fishing reports would go a long way :)

You probably notice that I reply to everyone in my reports and this is a simple acknowledgement on my part for their replies :)

So to answer your question... no, I take no offence

Thats always much appreciated, at least by myself.

I post alot, because I like to be an active member on a great forum. I Take time in my reports too. Alot of pics I do take are strictly for this board, I would have never taken them if I wasn't planning a report.

Everything here is good IMO. The is ebb and flow. Some things are good, some are bad, but it all equals out. I'm glad to be a member here, and I appreciate the people that take time to post reports.

The spammers are noticeable, I view the posts but generally ignore them. No big deal.

I'd like to take this opportunity to thank the members here that do post reports. Even though I'm in a totally different area then most on board here, I look forward to the reports. It doesn't help me much with fishing, but it sure motivates me and fills time.

Some really great anglers on this board, great people, great advice etc. THANKS MEMBERS, I always appreciate your time thumbsup_anim.gif

  9. Here, you just crashed a helicopter and likely filled your drawers, we've got a folding lawn chair with webbing from the 1970's for you to sit on.

Pilot: "No thanks, I'm safer in the cockpit of the wrecked 'copter."

That made me laugh because about 10 years ago I sat on one of those chairs near the edge of a deck 10ft off the ground, friggin thing broke and I fell backwards off the deck and landed on the back of my neck. Thank god I landed in their garden and not on cement. An hour or so later though it was pretty funny, good times...

  10. Here's my Bannock recipe:

    1/2 cup white flour

    1/2 cup whole wheat flour

    1 teaspoon baking soda

    3 tablespoons powdered milk

    1/2 teaspoon salt

Mix all dry ingredients and add water slowly until mixture is slightly sticky

And any extras (nuts, raisins, chocolate chips, etc.)

Separate into 3 or 4 paddies

Fry in an oiled frying pan on moderate heat until both sides are golden brown

You can then eat it with your meal or top it with Peanut butter and jam, butter, etc.

In our neck of the woods, thats fry bread, and its amazing on its own or with anything else for that matter. Even dipped in beans its great. The cats asshat.gif though is slicing them in half and making bacon and eggers with them! mmmmmmm.

Bannock is cooked in an oven or just over an open fire, looks sorta like a large square loaf of bread. But its also delicious, not quite fry bread good though.

Were having both for my sons 7th b-day this weekend, down at the river (not really camping, lol, but in nature nonetheless)

  11. It's not his fishing skill that makes me watch, that's for sure lol... but seeing exotic critters with huge teeth is certainly cool. I also get a laugh every time he loses a fish and the sad & dramatic music plays for the next 10 minutes as he stares at the broken line thinking "Why... WHY?? WHYYYYYYYY?????"

The catfish episode from the states where he went noodling was funny as hell... he measures a 50lb catfish mouth, and says "This could fit a human head for sure... they could be killers..." OH THE TERROR, I WILL NEVER SWIM AGAIN!!!

I still tune in as often as possible... lmao @ myself!

lol, yeah, some of the things are a little overboard. On that same episode he mentioned that giant catfish could be positioned below the damn gorging on dead humans, or something like that anyhow. Made me laugh... My kids are all "catfish eat humans dad???"

I generally just take his word on all these exotic fish, because, well I don't know any better, lol. That is until he started chasing a 10ft Pike, whistling.gif

  12. yup sensitivity, colorline, surface clarity, ping rate - in spite of the bad reviews I really look forward to getting back up there now with this new toy and with a little luck, being able to post some great reports (I know u all LOVE those B))

You'll be fine. Just allow yourself more time on the water to adjust things and get used to the settings.
