  1. Thats one heck of a care package HH!!!

    Im making cod tonight.

Honestly their really is no bad way

Im gonna grill mine in tinfoil bags with butter, seasoning salt, a whole onion, 2 cloves of garlic and pepper

Ill pre cook the onion and galic first because the cod cooks quickly on the grill

    This is simple and tasty

Ill serve it with a side of panfries done extra crispy

  2. Good god brian, your better than me!

I made some bass cranks from balsa and it took me all winter to make 4 hahahah

Gonna do it again though because one colourway was friggen unreal(black head, glow in the dark green)

Its friggen hard to hand carve a lure that runs true. But super fun and amazing when it hooks lips!

  3.

They were fishing a pond; not hunting it.

This probably affects the bird watchers more than it affects the birds. There are lots of small ponds around where birds can stop for a rest. In fact, there are some ponds (which are inaccesible to people) less than a kilometer west of this location. The birds will just stop at a different pond; but the birders don't get to watch them.

If this one particular pond is important to the migration; and if there is a concern that the presence of people interferes with the migration, then the pond and surrounding area should be offlimits to all people (including bird watchers) during the migration.

    Agreed

My bad. Around here "birders" are hunters. I did not realize it was bird watchers.

So again, are bird watchers super lazy?

Why are they watching a pond? Get out in the bush ffs

  4. Why are people hunting a pond?

Even if its legal, thats just silly.

The part of hunting I love is the chase, just like fishing.

Id never fish a pond unless I was teaching a 3 year old to fish. Even then I probably wouldnt bother.

Most these birds also land in fields.

    Makes no sense to me???

As I type this there is maybe 200 geese to my right, IN A FIELD

  5. That soup would have been VERY welcome a few days ago. I was up in the mountains near Fort Steele BC on an elk hunt and we had heavy frosts most nights. One member of our party shot a nice 6 x 6 bull elk, so eventually I will have some elk meat. It is my favourite of the antlered game, by far.

Tonight I am back in the camper in Greenwood BC along the Crowsnest Highway. Next hunt is up the Athabasca River for whitetail deer and black bear, in less than two weeks.

But NO halibut, and NO elk for yours truly this trip, guess I will just have to do this again.........

    Doug

Sounds like a great excuse doug!!!

Best of luck on the future hunts. Lay down some tobacco on the north side of a tree, see if that luck changes!

I made 5 gallons of chilli with 4 seeds of ghost pepper 4 days back and brought it in to work for the guys/gals in the field. Boy o boy did they appreciate that!

  6. Sure got alot of meat off that leg. Meat in, noodles in, and just the way I like it. Bit of brooth, and lots of noodles. Just enough brooth to sup up with bread. A few shakes of the hot sauce and good to go.

Would ship you a bowl full rick, but not sure of the ETA. LOL

    Hahahaha, no worries bud!

I got some pork steaks cooking in a pepper vinagrette with potatoes, celery and carrots. We'll survive

    ???

That looks mighty tasty though Brian!

  7. Good on ya!

My day started off great! Got progressively worse(work related) then even worse(two daughters involved in a high school brawl) then better when my youngest wanted to come out, then WAAAAAY worse to get home to find the wife crying and barely moving after having suffered some sort of back injury????

Then the realization I have to take time off work to watch karsten(our 7 month old) because wifey cant barely even move.

    Brutal day

  8. Ten inches and up.........they are by FAR the best fresh water fish to eat. Their flesh is pure white when fried up and no strong fish taste whatsoever..........only thing, they are VERY delicate and must be either kept alive or iced down while fishing until filleted. NEVER put them on a stringer and have them bake on the surface......what a waste if that is done.

    I back this.

Good crappie have a very subtle sweet taste(at least up here, im sure it varies with waterbodies to a degree)

Cook a perch, bluegill, walleye and crappie, with no coating whatsoever.

Its funny we all love walleye so much. Do this and guess what? Thats all breading seasoning and cooking. Walleye has about .25 outta ten on the flavour scale lol

  9. You know you can do the exact same thing even faster with a good sharp knife, right?

    Yep!!!!

Ive been filleting the same way as you sinker since I was a kid. Its a common method here.

I fillet northern different but for walleye, yessir thats the technique!

Also, get a good knife guys/gals. A good knife not only works faster and more accurate, it will hold its edge FAAAAAR LONGER than cheap knives.

  10. Remember it very vividly.

I lived at my grandpas after my gma passed. I moved in to look after him.

We had a solid routine. I was up at 5am and got the grapefruit cut and ready. Heated up the skillet for eggs and klick.

Woke gramps up at 530am and we had our grapefruit, then klick and eggs.

Next up was always cbc then cnn for an hour or so.

Gramps hit the washroom and thats when the first plane hit.

I never bothered him because in all honesty I thought it was one of those CNN docu movie type things.

By the time I realised that it was real we barely left our chairs.

By 530pm I went on a beer run and gramps asked for a 12 pack instead of his 4 pack. I bought a case, knowing he was shook and it was gonna be a long night.

That was one of three times I seen my grampa cry, one talking about being in ww1, two when gma died.

It was so sureal and shocking

Unless I get dementia or alzheimers Ill never forget every little detail of that day.
