How to transfer ownership for a boat
rdambros replied to Dontcryformejanhrdina's topic in General Discussion
Just another point. If you bought a used 'Ontario' boat, then there is no title. Some American states have title (or ownerships) for their boats and motors. So, in the US you have to transfer title, or ownership, of the boat and the motor. This is similar to what we do in Ontario for cars. But, in Ontario there is no such registration for boats or motors. It is like saying, how to I transfer the ownership of the TV I just bought used on Kijiji. So, as has been stated above, the only proof that you own the boat (or ownership), is the ORIGINAL bill of sale from the dealership and another ORIGINAL bill of sale from the person who bought it from the dealership to YOU. Obviously, if there are other intervening buyers and sellers, then you will need a 'chain of ownership' from the dealership all the way to the current vendor. What you need to do, is register with Service Canada, that you are now the owner of the boat with certain specific numbers on the side of it. In other words, the previous owner would have applied for the boat numbers and Service Canada knows that this boat number 1234567 belongs to John Smith. When he sells it to you, then you have to advise them that you have the boat with those numbers. It's not really an ownership, its more like a tracking device. Now, whether its required to be done or not, I don't know. BUT BE CAREFUL. Up until now you only had to pay HST on the trailer. When you advise Service Canada of the sale and request that the boat numbers be transferred to you, then you will get a request to disclose the purchase price. After that, you will get a notice from the government that you owe them HST on the whole value of the boat!!!!!! So, maybe someone can post any reason to change over the boat numbers, but if I were you, I would leave it. -
Me and my 13-year-old son we're scheduled to go to Lake Simcoe this Saturday to go ice fishing. I just got called by the ice fishing guide and was advised that the ice is too thin today to go fishing. Now what! So, me and my son Are looking for a place to fish. Anybody have any suggestions for an outfitter that has huts on the ice safe. It would also be really good if the fish were active as well. Please post the name and telephone number of the Outfitter and the name of the lake thanks in advance.

Well, we are back and had a great time. Jamaica was really nice and makes you want to go back real soon. People really appreciate the tourists and are really nice. The fish in Montego Bay were very plentifull, but very small. I tried a lot of the lures that I brought and caught on almost everything, but shrimp on a hook worked the best. I would bring a roe bag or something else to tie small pieces of shrimp to the hook. I did not have anything, so I was constantly re-baiting. One morning I saw two three pound flounders come in the rock pier that I was fishing, but I didn't have any shrimp that mornging and despite jigging right in front of it, the flounders were not biting my bait. Also, saw some skip jacks, but could hook into one either. In the end, I caught red snapper a little bigger than my hand and some other small fish. It was well worth bringing the rods and I would do it again. Thanks for all the helpful suggestions. See you on the lakes.

I went to Scugog on Saturday, and got skunked! I went to Birch Island and was wondering where you caught your fish on Scugog. I'm thinking of trying again this weekend.

Leaving day after tomorrow. Packed and ready to go. I will try to post when I return. Happy New Year.

I was in Costco yesterday in Richmond Hill and they had a dozen of them in stock. I bought an Eskimo last year and used it only one day, it worked like butter.

Vinni, I don't think it has been mentioned, but I would suggest that you buy whatever your friends are fishing. Different manufacturers flasher will interfere with other manufacturers. This is especially true for the Marcum flashers. So, if all your friends have Marcums, then buy a Marcum and spend as much as you can afford. Rember that means at least $350. I just bought the HB Ice55 and I am impressed with the fit and finish. It comes with the carrying case, which may be important, but all the of the units will fit in a five gallon pail. Let us all know what you buy.

This is what I plan to bring, along with 6 and 8 hooks, a filet glove, rods and reels. Anybody have any other suggestions, or am I missing anything?

I have been looking into this for some time now, for the upcomming ice fishing season 2011/2012. Basically, there are 3 manufacturers to consider, HB, Marcum and Vexilar. Then, depending on your budget you should buy the best one you can afford. I have been considering the Ice 55, LX-5 and the FL-18/20/22. From some internet posts, I have read some people had returned their HB, due to problems with noise. I have also heard that the Marcums are too powerful and if you fish with friends, it will interfere with their flashers. That will mean that you will have to fish 20 yards away from them. However, if you fish alone, or your friends also have Marcums, then its not an issue. On the positive side, all the above-stated flashers (once they work properly), receive great reviews from the people that purchased them. In the end, I think I am going to buy the HB Ice 55. Hopefully, I wont have the issues that others have experienced. I like the simple design and the ability to zoom into any part of the water column (not just the bottom 6 feet or 12 feet). If anyone has more comments, I would be really interested to hear them before I make my purchase. Thanks.

Thanks for the information. @Staffman - thanks for the advice, but did you have any success at all in and around the area? @Waterrunner - thanks as well. I'm off to BassPro to get some steelhead hooks. My plan is to take one plano box with an assortment of tackle. Keep the ideas coming, on trips and ideas. I also need some ideas for NEW YEARS EVE, as we will be there at that time. Cheers.

How do you check what is migrating in the area between December 27 and January 4? Anyone know if the fishing would be good? I would like to keep the fish and bring it back to the hotel to have them cook it up for my family. Anyone done this before? What's the best fish to keep for a Jamaican Fish Fry? Thanks for all the information.

If it makes a difference, were are staying at the Holiday Inn at Montego Bay. I am going to try night fishing the surf and at the reef. During the day, I will try to kayak out to deeper water and see if I can catch anything bigger than 6 inches. Lastly, I am considering a charter. I have only begun my search and found Marlin Madness, out of the local boating club. Does anyone have any experience, either positive or negative, with any charters in Jamaica. Lastly, fishing aside any other MUST DO ON THIS TRIP ideas. We are going to take the half day trip to Dunns Rivers Falls, but other than that I don't have any plans other than the charter, for half day. Thanks.

Thanks, that's helpful. I think I will raid the three tackle boxes for silver and white lures. Should I be after top water or diving baits? I will be mostly fishing from shore and a nearby sand bar. So, I will be fishing the surf. For rods, I am bringing two telescopic rods. For reels, I have a couple of inexpensive Shimanos, that I will bring. I think all I have to go buy is salt water hooks and trebles. I heard that the shrimp works. Keep the ideas coming, I leave in one and a half months.

My family has just booked our winter trip to JAMAICA. Now, being a fishing family, we are definitely going to fish when we go there. We are going to be staying in Montego Bay at the Holiday Inn. What rod, reel and tackle should I bring to shore fish from the resort? If anyone has done a good fishing charter in Montego Bay, I would love to hear about that as well. Thanks.

I was thinking of trying smelt fishing for the first time this weekend. I was thinking of going to Jackson's Point with some family and friends. Do you think this weekend, April 29 or 30 would still have a run of smelt???? Thanks for any information/advice.

I have posted another thread on a family fishing resort referral. I have a family of 5 and 2 grandparents that want to go for a week on a family fishing trip. I was looking for an all inclusive resort, with boat, guides, beach and activities for the kids. Would you recommend Horwood Lake? Thanks.

Has anybody stayed at the WaterFalls Lodge. It looks like it would fit my requirements. www.waterfallslodge.com

I am planning my family's first (hopefully annual) fishing trip and would like referrals from people on this forum. I have a family of five, with kids 16, 13 and 10. My family and grandma and grandpa want to spend a WEEK in northern Ontario at a fishing resort. My requirements would be a resort that can accommodate children with activities. I would also like an all-inclusive ("American Plan"), boat rental, and fishing guides. It would be nice if it had a pool and a sandy beach. We are planning to go the second week of July. OH, of course the fishing has to be GREAT. Any personal experiences and recommendations/referrals would be greatly appreciated.

Well we went to Nippising and used the services of Idle Time. We caught a tonne of fish. The kids caught as many perch as they wanted. And, just before lunch we caught four pickerel, which were quickly fillet and made into a meal along with some of the perch. Then we got into a school of two pound herring and caught 15 - 20 of them. We had a great time and had no issues with the ice huts. We even got a break on the cost of the ice hut for the kids. It was a really long drive, but the fishing was worth it. Cheers.

Well, I have made plans to go to Nippising. I will try to file my first report after the weekend.
-
Yes, I know. But, we had commitments that fell through. Which, gave the opportunity to go ice fishing. So, regardless of availability, do you have any suggestions or referrals for a resort? Thanks

I have the opportunity to take the family (wife and two kids, boy 13 and girl 10) ice fishing this weekend. I'm looking for a referral to a great ice fishing resort. I would like a resort that will do everything; including taking you out, providing some guiding and instruction to kids, a shore lunch and some evening entertainment. What I don't want is an ice hut rental, where the resort provides the hut and heat and nothing else. That's fine for me and the boys, but with the wife and kids I will need some fringe benefits. The type of fishing isn't that important, panfish for the kids would be just fine. Thank you in advance for any suggestions. Romeo.

I have a stupid question about taxes on used boats. I know if I buy a used boat from the US, that customs will collect the taxes on the boat and trailer when you cross the border. Then the remaining taxes on the trailer are collected when you register the trailer with the Ministry of Transportation. But, if I buy a used boat from a someone in Canada do I pay HST on the price of the boat. If so, when do you pay the HST and where do they collect it and is there any way around paying the taxes. I figure there is an obvious answer, but just don't know it. Thanks.

Thanks. I am going to try the shore line. Has anyone tried deeper and in the middle of the lake with any success? Seeing as I have a manual auger, I would prefer not making too many holes. LOL Thanks.
