  1. How deep of a catch till we need to potentially Fizz them:

    For bass?

    For perch?

    For Walleye?

I heard Lake trouts or Salmon do not have any problem and self equalized upon reaching the surface.

Here is an article about Fizzing fish http://sports.espn.go.com/outdoors/bassmaster/columns/story?page=b_col_bt_1106_fizzing_procedure

I have never done it before, but wondering if anglers should start carrying needles on their boats just to be ready when it needs to be done. The other issue is if not done with experience and proper knowledge, Will the needle also potentially or accidentally end up puncturing other internal organ resulting in killing the fish?

  2. Have Friday off work and was hoping to get out on the Niagara for a couple of hours. I know it sure was windy here today, anyone have an update on the water clarity in the upper river? I know I asked this once before a year or two ago and someone was able to post an actual live satellite picture of the river. If anyone is able to do this tomorrow some time I'd be very grateful (I'd do it myself but not sure where they found live pictures of the river.)

I normally used this site for rough info on water clarity at niagara, http://coastwatch.glerl.noaa.gov/modis/region_map.html

Between lake erie and lake ontario is niagara river, if mouth of upper niagara on Lake Erie map looks stained, chances are the upper river will also be murky. however if you look at mouth of lower niagara on the lake ontario map section, and the color might not look too bad, chance are lower river is more fishable.

Sometimes the sattelite image are covered with clouds, then it is almost impossible to know what is happening on the river. Put a post at niagarafishing.net site as well, hope someone will add their input on water clarity.

  3. The family and I are off for a long weekend in D.C. I have never been and hope to take in the Smithsonian and some of the other sites for a few days.

I googled the route and have some alternatives. I was just wondering if anyone on the board knows the route and has some recommendations/things to look out for.

We intend to leave TO at 6 a.m. tomorrow morning.

Also any midway stops for sites, shopping etc would be approeciated.

    Thanks

    Nemo

Do not miss franklin mills just border of Philadelphia. Largest outlet mall in the USA. It was so big, it has two fastfood center. Jersy city also has another outlet.

check roomsavers.com for great deal on motels. they have the best deal that even beats on line prices. Also visit the rest area, roomsavers booklet are available there. Ohter good deal store are big lots or Ollies, they are liquidator. If you need internet access, always visit a county library or Apple store, they are free to use.

  4. Anyone tried Visious brand Fluro line? I read mix review on it due to potential breakage. Cheapest in the market.

I want to use the fluro as a leader on braid especially on dropshotting or steelheading.

I am contented either using full mono or full braid on my reel for bass fishing.

  5. I just pulled a bone head after a sweet day of perch'n and broke my skeg in/on the driveway!! :wallbash:

It's a clean break and the bottom half is still in great shape.

    [IMG_1802.jpg

Can anyone recommend a place to have this fixed in the Barrie area?

I have been also looking at the skegshields/skeggards. Does any one know if they are any good and would it work with my break?

Call doug at simcoe prop 25223 Valleyview, Baldwin, ON 905-722-7767. He is at pefferlaw area. There is a possibility that you need to take the lower unit down first. You can get a quote just by sending a picture through email.

  6. I hardly fish this year and got lucky with some Salmon to remember by. Lost a lot due to improper hook set and broken line from sharp teeth of some fish, I was using 12 lb line.

I believe there are still few more salmon to arrived to your local tribe/pier once the weather gets colder. So don't give up on trying to aim for them as of yet. Best time to go is from 1-7am in the morning.

I did not have to take any fish and all were release since I used artificial to aim for them. My bait of choice aside from glow lures and crank baits....colored yarn and oil found on oyster and mussle can, sold at your local dollar stores: http://i223.photobucket.com/albums/dd294/bassfighter_album/IMG_0005.jpg.

Most negative experience was seeing too many female gutted out for their eggs and the body left to rot. I confront few guys and they responded with no sense of guilt that someone else might take the meat home.

  7. Next time we need to bring chairs...

...And someone else to carry all the gear down for us :D

Can you guys share some tips on your setups? Coz it is easy to get snagged over there.

Do you need to chum the area?

Are there other smaller fish species of fish that will steal your bait?

Is the hair rig seating right on the bottom?

    How heavy are the sinkers?

  8. this was my first bass opener with a boat so decided to try pigeon lake. i launched the boat about 6:30 at malard bay not the best launch but does the trick. right off the bat the fish were biting i was out alone so i didnt get to many pics and the ones i did get are on my phone and i don't know how to get them off the phone. i stayed out till around 9:30 or 10:00 then hunger and the rain drove me to head home.

later in the afternoon me and a buddy headed out hit the water around 6 and dammm they were still biting, well for me anyway not so much for the guy in the back of the boat he was skunked for the whole evening the best i caught was 4.5 to 5 pound on a popper i need a good scale and i love top water fishing. I only took up fishing last year so all in all it was likly the best day fishing ever for me ended up with about 18 bass and a couple of perch all were released with a simile on face face anyway

The Barometric pressure change cause fish to become active, one reason fishing becomes good before and after stormy weather. Then when the sun comes out the next day with hardly any clouds, fishing gets tough, since they had fed fews days prior.

  9. Went on Sunday to Niagara US side since we got the US license, weather was at times sunny and other times cloudy. I caught 5 catch and release US bass. Largest SM Bass was over 3 lber, while the smallest large mouth bass was under 1 lb, the other three SM bass were at least 2 lb. Also saw thousands of bait fish.

Hard to fish this time of the year, since we do not want to fish the Canadian side. Lots of speed boat and sea doo making too many noises. Fish were caught when it got cloudy, otherwise it was tough fishing on a sunny no cloud day. The largest fish was caught by drop shotting. I was using 1/2-3/4 oz jighead grub and spoon most of the time.

Weather Temp was around 20 degrees, Water temp was 69+ degrees.

The water level was slightly higher than normal, still some moss around, but manageable, just have to be patient in cleaning our lures.

There were tons of carp surfacing, carps are flooded there. Anyone tried to fish carp on their boat? Any technique to share. They get scared everytime we throw our jig at them. Not sure how to use hair rig with corn to entice them either. None of the Carp are over 10 lber.

By next week bass opener, it will be chaotic on the water everywhere.

  10. i've been fishing this lake for the last 5 or 6 years... sinse the ministry put the green chemical in to cut back on the weeds, fishing hasn't been the same.

I heard about the ministry doing this every so often within thae past few years on some lakes, trying to control weed growth. I was told by some resdidence of Sturgeon lake that the minstry expect property owner to plow away too much weeds growing outside their lake front property, or they can hire professionals to do that.

I know the lake st. john inside out, when I got there last August 2009, the weeds had crumpled up so bad in some areas, where two years prior, it used to contain the healtiest weeds I have ever seen in any lake.

Kerry, I know they are not algae bloom usually seen at rice lake, they are definitely chemicals. They are liquid not small mini particles floating on top of the water. The water was minty green, almost zero visibility.

  11. Tough lake to fish that lake since the weeds died out last year due to some chemicals from the factory or chemicals to control weed growth spread by the locals to made the water close to shore line more swimable, since some area's weed growth seemed to be out of control resulting in unhealthy weeds with algae. The whole lake was minty green in color, same colors you get from mint ice creme. We did catch one walleye on our first cast, and a pike on our last cast of that day. Was surprise that the fish can even see our white grub inspite of the milky green water.

By the time we got there, we were debating either to turn around and go somewhere else. None of us were willing to step on the water due to its color. The entire shore line was really bad then.

The worst part was the healthy weeds that was used to be there were gone, that was one of our Walleye honey hole. Only few visible crumpled up dead weeds on some spot and completely flat on most. Not sure how long it takes for the weeds to grow back again to certain level.

    Hope everything improve since then.

  12. Costco battery is quite decent for the price you have to pay. Sometimes they have $10-$20 off their batteries, the price went up this year. Trolling motor battery cost $115 tax included.

I had another Sealed trolling motor battery that is still running after 5 years. I troll a lot, and few times I almost drained both batteries fishing for 15+ hours. My trolling battery is not connected to my main motor charging system. It is also a good back up, in case my main battery dies, I have my trolling motor to bail me out.

Be careful of Canadian Tire testing procedure. It is not always reliable, and depends on the person testing it. I had a working battery that I had it tested at CT just to double check, they said it was not good anymore. I then ran my trolling motor at full power with the suspected worn out battery for 6-7 hours, once in a while stopping it for 5-10 minutes to cool down the motor to ensure the motor will not get too hot. After 6 hours, it still had some juice on the battery. The battery is at least 5 years old, but well maintained, I always charge it by the time I get home from fishing. I also made sure it is clean, away from cement floor during winter months, and charge it at least once a month kept on a heated environment.

6 years ago I neglected maintaining a trolling battery, did not trickle charge it for 6 months frozen during season, did not always recharge it as soon as I finished fishing, never check the internal water level, and it died in less than 3 years.

  13. I spoke to quite a few people that took the test at bass pro shop or at other more costly way of taking the test on the spot, it seemed the questionares offered by these site were way easier than what was offered on line.

I studied and prepared for my on line test, paid roughly $25 or $29 with some promotion offered last year taking the on-line test. It was not as easy as I thought and have to fill in some blanks at 2-3 questionares, while those who paid more (even as high as $65) who took the test on the spot, said it was so easy, only multiple choice questionares.

I knew someone whose grown up son became a moderator and took the test twice ,one on his father's behalf, but I am not a Rat!

I do believe some cheated for sure, like our Auto Emmision testing program, the program has gouge so many unhappy customer from making uncessesary $400 repair, where a vehicle can be made to pass or made to fail. Of course , there are always good honest garage and mechanics out there, just have to find them.

  14. A friend and I want to go fish buffalo harbour for bass. If we launch on the canadian side do we need passports to fish in american waters? We won't be landing on any american soil.

Also, what safety equipment does NY require?

Make sure both of you carry the US(US$70 this year) and CA fishing license to be prepared to show it when being asked, no need passport. As long as you do not even dock on the other side even just an excuse to pee. They got cameras monitoring the border like a hawk.

The water is not necessarily split in half to separate US and Canadian water boundaries. In CA side it is still illegal to aim for OOS Bass. I would call DEC NY just to familiarized yourselves where the borderline seperates. However, I have not physically seen any officer stopping anyone as of yet, but they are visible out there. Last year, I witness Americans coming to the CA side to fish and vice versa. Not sure if every anglers abide by the rule and carry their required fishing license, not worth getting caught without them!

Bass are only catch and release as of now and no live bait to be use.

If you follow all necessary equipment for Canadian safe boating requirements, you are fine with the US as well. Our CA life jacket standards are higher than some that are being sold in the US.

I heard lots of floating moss at the upper and erie right now.

  15. I have both reel.

SHimano Sedona has a smoother drag even if it only has 3-4 bearings, a lighter reel as well.

My Daiwa regal has 10 bearings , but the drag is not as smooth as my Sedona. Extra spool come in handy.

Depending on the type of fish. For bass or steelhead, go with Sedona.

For Salmon with more medium action long rod, the regal is fine.

  16. Landed 3 for 3 Salmon last night , caught 2 female and one male using chartreuse crank bait lure from dollarama. I left by 9:30pm as soon as it got crowded.

Surprise to know the Salmon are still coming into the area even if the weather temp was warmer than average. It was southeast wind last night.

I got skunk 2 night ago fishing for 1.5 hours.

  17. Thanks to some friends who were fishing at a local tribe daily within the past few days(he also landed a Brown trout). More salmon came in few days ago. It took me almost 10 minutes to land one of these . Both female caught, release one and gave the other to someone else who begged for it.

Landed 2 for 2 within an hour, I have to leave the premises after facing few aggravation from others who stole my spot after I was in the process of landing my fish. I have to invite all of my fishing buddies on my next trip to avoid similar aggravation.

  18. Some of you guys just don't get it! Parking or owning a property in GTA toronto cost a lot of money due to high taxes. Why do most wants to live in GTA, and suffer having to pay for high taxes, and expensive housing? living in Winnepeg is always cheaper?

Parking in Eliot Lake might be free! Parking at a friend garage is a bonus! I semi- manage a property at GTA for the past 2 years, parked my boat indoor for free. They even pay me by the hour plus my travelling time and gas mileage to go there and check the premises. The property got sold few weeks ago. My lucky situation can't compare to the $50 competitive rates of parking at a GTA property. I wish I can find similar free parking situation.

U-Haul or similar public storage in GTA wants up to $90/month outdoor storage.

You are not comparing Apples to Apples.

I am posting to inform those who live in the GTA area and want the convenience to access our boats. Parking at Hamilton or Oshawa or Keswick is only $20 outdoor. For us to park at Elliot lake for free, & want to access our boat close to our home in GTA is not feasible.

Even owning a house close to Jane and Finch might cost more than many homes sold at other county away from GTA. A friend of mine lives in NY...........Hornel, Ever heard of this isolated town of 5000 population? Housing still cost $125,000. How much would parking in Manhattan cost?

$50 is for outdoor parking at oakdale.

  19. The property used to be rented by pharmaceutical company, now they used it to sell their fleet of vehicles.

I also originally assumed it is close to Jane and Finch area. I took off practically everything when I stored it there , just to make sure.

The place looks very tidy, huge property, does not look cheap. They sell more higher quality cars.

There are no gates so far.

  20. I just parked my boat on Oakdale road GTA near 400/Finch intersection for $50 a month. With Security at night. There are other cheaper parking space 45 minutes drive outside of GTA, but if you want to access your boat in GTA, this is probably the best price.

Before the major snowfall to permanently store my boat, I can still take the boat in and out for fishing at Niagara in the next month, Just give their security guard one day notice.

    http://toronto.kijiji.ca/c-cars-vehicles-h...QAdIdZ162503805

The owner is Gino at 416 702 7560 . The place is actually a Car dealer with extra parking space outdoor and indoor as well. It is paved with gravel.

I told Gino to give OFC members special rate during summer months. He said he will consider if there are enough customer coming from our community.

  21. Congrads to landing the fish! Get ready for more sleepless nights during fall Salmon season for the rest of your life.

If you want the fish to reduce its fighting time so others can cast their line back into the water, try to slowly lift the fish to the surface sooner, they will stop fighting once they have inhaled some air. Enjoy a longer fight if there are less anglers around.

Once you catch more and get more confident/experience, you should be able to land those fish at yourown discression.

I was only using 10 lb mono, the advantage of the stretch is the line absorbs some shock, so both you and the fish does not get too tired. However, you need to re-tie your line everytime you land one. Using mono line also prevent the hook from bending.

  22. What makes a glow product light up, Ultra Violet Rays found in most lights.

The best product to shine your glow lures is a Mini UV light used to check currency authenticity. Sold in some dollar store. I bought mine close to coxwell and Queen street in downtown toronto, cost $1 with extra spare 3 batteries, total six batteries.

Even if it only has one LED light and very small, it is pure UV, therefore it outshines any other light including the seemed-to-be powerful camera flash. Once you have them, you will never go back to using Camera flash to shine your glow lures. It is small, light and the batteries are way more efficient than a camera flash as well.

One set(3 ) of batteries lasted me for 2 season or two years fishing for salmon. 6 batteries will last me for 4 season.

  23. Landed 2 female using glow cleo and lost another using roe. Both were release. My other two buddies also landed 2 and lost couple more using roe and marshmelow both on the same time. Fish were fighting hard so far!

It was a good evening fishing from 9:30-1:00am. One of the photo shows the fellow who was kind enough to help me land the fish, He was somewhat drunk and overly friendly.

This year has been a lucky year for me for this Salmon hunt. 14th Salmon landed to date in 5 outing. However, 5-6 years ago, the run was even way better.

It was a NE east , and surprisingly, fishing was good at our spot. We could have caught more, but have to go to work the next day.
