  1. Gonna go try and cure it in the lower Niagara today...

  2. At least you got your rod back ! Good story
  3. Yes I forgot to mention that....we tried 'my' method of pushing it through for a good ten minutes. Then it was time to put the camera down hahaha....he had to apply a LOT of pressure on both sides of the hook point so I could actually get it through. I would hate to see what it would be like with a rusty dull hook
  4. Well I honestly never thought the day would come but after fishing for over 25 years I got my first hook embedded into my hand. It didn't hurt going in but I will tell you I thought they would come out A LOT easier.... A lesson learned for sure. I was 'lipping' a smallie boatside. Just as I went to grab it, it did a bunch of headshakes. I didn't even feel it go in but as the fish went crazy I felt the hook deep in my thumb..WOW, it was the worst. It continued to do what a caught fish does (flip out lol) with the hook still deep in my thumb. I had my friend hold the fish totally still while I removed the hook from the fish. Tossed the fish back without harm and started surgery. I removed the hook from the lure then started on the HARD part. This was a brand new hook. It went in pretty deep. I have seen hooks removed before by wrapping some braid around the shank and giving it a yank but I figured it was too deep so I opted to push it through. I will tell you it was not fun. I thought it would come out so much easier but that was not the case. Moral of the story, always be super cautious no matter how many times you have done it before....I guess I got complacent and paid for it. Here is the video...its not disgusting but maybe not for the faint at heart. I actually find it amusing because I had my buddies kids on the boat and they could have cared less. It is pretty funny to listen to the little guys... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3gIRbe4OUHA
  5. I love 'Ram' mounts but they dont come with any instructions. I just bought a trolling motor stabalizer (#108) and am looking for mounting options. If anyone has any pics it would definately help. Thanks !
  6. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iAf8a6YNx5Y Dont worry, Dave approved of us revealing his 'top secret'
  7. Walleye or bass you can find both out there for sure. You dont need riggers but if you want to dial them in you can bring them. Jets and harnesses and or get on bottom....you will find them all. Make a stop at 'Fishin Niagara' across from the launch and Denis can point you in the right direction.
  8. Got my first ballot in today..... Question....after I dropped it in the box i noticed a 'skill testing question' on the back of my buddy's ballot....I didn't even see it !....any idea if this has to be filled out to be eligble ?
  9. I have an HDS-5 Just looking at the diagram there...wouldn't having the transducer mounted on the bottom effect how the unit reads ?....Just thinking of the motor swiveling around.... Thanks for the help so far guys !
  10. Thanks guys, I guess I have to purchase another lowrance then.(gonna have to get permission from my wife first though:)
  11. I currently have one fishfinder at the console of my boat but want to set up a second one at the bow. My question is. Do most guys run a transducer off of the trolling motor or bow or do you run them off the back as well. Is there a kit I can get to run a bow mount set up or do you have to buy a specific unit for this application (currently have a humminbird for the bow and lowrance for the console) Just looking for pros and cons of these type of set ups. Dont know if it matters but it is a bass boat that I am setting up. Thanks guys
  12. Just looking for feedback for those that use them. I just bought one for summer tournies and have never used them before. Any tips ? tricks ?? It seems that if the fish were moving around it would affect the reading on them.... Any input appreciated, thanks !
  13. Just wanted to say how impressed I am with this guy. He did a great little show/seminar and gave away A LOT of stuff. I even managed to get myself a free sub !! For those that missed it, it was both informative and entertaining. I mean the guy gave away all of his rods and reels !! It was awesome. If I was a kid there and had taken the time to make a sign and came out with a $400 dollar reel I would have been pretty pumped. Now when he announced he was giving away his boat ....I was ready to take my shirt off, paint my chest and jump in the aquarium. Unfortunately you have to enter through subway....however it still would be pretty sweet to be running up the lake in that thing !! ...question, does it come with your NEW motor ?? Dave took the time to meet everyone after as well, and hand out free sub cards..... Just wanted to say, good on ya Dave. It was nice meeting you. James - RLFT
  14. My condolences Flex. I can tell you I almost lost my dad and I do take every opportunity I can to spend time with him, take him fishing and bond. Sorry for your loss brother.
  15. If so that makes me happy ! I am mostly going to be fishing Erie, Ontario, Niagara...... So if this is the case and I actually have contour lines I am excited !
  16. Correct, it is the HDS 5 I was under the impression that I had to buy a mapping/navionics card to get lake maps (Erie..)
  17. Having been a fortunate soul to pick up an HDS unit, I am a little confused. Do I have to buy the lake maps card to get mapping ? I understand that you can upgrade to the platinum cards for 3D views etc....I am curious though to know what is included and what else I need for this unit. GPS/chartplotting is already a feature correct ? Thanks
  18. There are no fish in the Niagara and all species are closed right now !!! hahahahaa If you are gonna fish the lower from the Canadian side you will likely launch at queenston (I am sure you can find directions online) The street to the ramp is Dumfries (I think) if that helps.... Depends what you are gonna fish for but u will likely be drifting..... Anchoring can be tricky down there unless you are down river in a really slow pool. The water breaks and goes from 20 feet down to 100 in some spots quickly so I would say drifting is your best bet if its ur first time fishing. As for ice...that is day to day...you gotta be careful because some of these pieces dont look so big until you are next to them. Most of the time even if there is ice it is fishable...just be careful. You will see where other boats are drifting so you could just follow suit.....just watch for guys from shore chucking lead at you If you want ...play it simple. There is a good drift as soon as you put ur boat in the water..... Good luck
  19. I know 'they say' that leader material is 'tougher' etc etc....however I cant say I am convinced. I have used both for years now and hook just as many fish and land just as many fish with fluoro vs 'leader material' I just have a hard time paying $12 for 30 yards when I can get 300 Yards for almost the same price. If someone has solid evidence for me I would love to see or hear it. Opinions also welcome
  20. Okay i have been looking at the Lowrance HDS 5 online and see that many look different... At the end of the descriptions there are different numbers, for example, 140-19, 140-30, 140-21 Another question....after I but the unit do I have to buy a card too ?? (looks like they are around $250 or so) thanks guys
  21. off the dock toons .....ahhhh cmon, I have dial up ! ....i dont really but...
  22. Thats perfect...thanks. Any cons or features you wish this thing had ??
  23. I know there are tons and tons of options out there.... I want and 'need' a good unit for summer. Can anyone recommend a good unit that is affordable....say something between $600-800 Any input would be appreciated....pros and cons Thanks guys
  24. Anyone using a lower profile such as the zillion, curado ....etc for muskie ? (with appropriate braid of course)
