  1. Hi guys,

I got a call from Dave (Fish Finder Charters) today. We were renting a hut from him last winter - he said that ice is 5 inches and he will be putting huts tomorrow. I am wondering if somebody can tell me where i can get a minnows around that area and if i can get to bay using some public access spot. Cause i bought hut i don't really need to rent a hut any more. Would like to go there this weekend. As i said i fished where once using Dave's hut rental service. Service was great.

Any help will be really appreciated.

  2. Summer fishfinders work just fine in the winter. You do not need to go out and buy a 4 or 5 hundred dollar flasher to catch fish through the ice.

I've been using my 130 dollar eagle fisheasy for 4 years now summer and winter and it still works great. The only limitation is the screen will freeze up much below about minus 12. Never really been an issue though when i'm in the portable. Johnny mentioned a simple way to mount your transducer and there are plenty of other ways to get it done. My dad whipped up something simple aswell using some threaded rod with an L bracket that hangs off my travel box.

The real trick is getting the angle of the skimmer just right and playing with the speed/sensitivity to get it just right.

Nice pictures, thank you for sharing. is any way you can get a picture of traducer mount???

  3. Here's a question along the same lines -- if you were to buy a portable fishfinder that would be used in both summer and winter, any recommendations on which one is best? I don't want to buy a flasher, but i understand some fishfinders are better for ice fishing.

As i said i have Humminbird PirannaMax160 portable. It's nice unit, i got it from another OFC user, it came with suction cup which is really handy for camping and boat renting. Only one thing you need for ice fishing - it's iceducer(tranducer), in my case it pretty much costs same as fishfinder itself. That is the reason i started that topic. I really like Lowrance x76c ice mashine which can be used during summer as well, but you will have to get another tranducer for it as well.

  4. Absolutely possible...so many different ways of doing it...the most important thing is getting the transducer to hang straight. A simple way is to bolt it to a thin piece of wood, then attach another piece of wood at a 90 deg. angle, making a "T". This way the t-bar spans your hole, and the 'ducer hangs down below. I used to do this, and would have it so I could swivel the t-bar inline with the other piece of wood, making transport more convenient.

The transducer I now have hangs pretty straight, so I just have a chunk of foam around the cable, and let it float around the hole. I put the sonar unit itself along with the battery and cable in a portable cooler...nice little package...and not hard to make. Trust me...I'm not that handy! rolleyes.gif

    Thank you,

Can you put some schema and drawing how you mount a tranducer? Picture would be great.

I don't need to put it in the cooler because it's a portable unit already.

  5. Some more pictures. I would like to add that this shelter looks really good inside and outside. It's really roomy, easy fit 2 big guys or 3 not so big. It took me 1 minute to put it on and 30 sec to put it down. I already pointed on quality of material - looks better than Frabil or Clam i was looking on.

  6. Great to hear Cosmos!

Grant is one of the most knowledgeable anglers out there right now. I personally have learned so much from him!

    Glad you enjoyed it! :thumbsup_anim:

    Hi Stoty,

Just came back from BassPro - big disappointment for me. I didn't get all those lures you showed us yesterday. It was really bad choice of NorthLand spoons. I still can't understand how come such a big store can't have a bigger varity and quantity. I really like new Rapala rods you showed. I didn't see any of them yet in a BassPro. Those rods look really solid - really nice handle and guides. I hope you will share your experience with us once you test them on the ice. Would be great if you will also tell us where we can buy them. I believe many guys will be happy to get them. Grant is really nice person, after my conversation with him he offered me to fish with him next week. It's amazing.

Thank you guys a lot. Your own presentation was also really well done. I got some really good advises which i will try next time i will be fishing for whities and trout.

  7. I bought small one today - if you will buy it online shipping will be free of charge.

Everything is $203 with HST. Should be in my place in 7 business days. Once it will come i will take a pictures and will put them here.

  8. Hey Bernie,

No I didn't yet fog the engine when I pulled the plugs...and they were fouled with oil...I don't do it through the carbs like I am suppose to....pain in the butt taking the plastic shroud off the front of the carb....I just fog it through the spark plug holes and turn the fly wheel by hand....this has been good for my for all the years I have owned this motor and a couple of others, although they were used outboards unlike this one I purchased new.

The engine DEFINITELY adds more oil when the gas runs out...I learned that the hard way YEARS ago when I would be speeding down the lake and one of my tanks would run dry and the motor would sputter for more gas....if I didn't immediately shut down the engine the plugs would get fouled with oil making it much harder to start the motor once I changed over to my other tank.

As someone else said (maybe it was Sinker) we over do it when it comes to these outboards as they will be put back into service in a couple of months anyways....I have a friend that does NOTHING and I mean NOTHING to his two boats and outboards except put them in his pole barn after each use....they start and run like new each time out.....go figure.

    Can you recommend something else???

  9. Hey guys,

Thanks for replying - i am learning a lot from You.

Could you let me know where can i get fogging oil and that is the name for it?

What kind of grease are you using? Again, where i can buy it?

I am planning to go fishing maybe couple more times. Do i need to put fuel stabilizer, if so - where to buy it?

    Thank you again and again

  10. Different motors sometimes require different methods. Older 2 strokes like my 1971 - 20hp Johnson require that you burn any remaining fuel out of the engine and then spray fogging oil into the cylinders ( remove plugs to do it) and carb. Crank the motor a bit to get the oil to cover the cylinder walls.

Newer motors require that you burn fuel in the system with fuel conditioner in it and leave it in the carburation system. You still fog the cylinders. You should always change the bottom end lube at the end of the season. My motors have been fine stored in an unheated garage.

Ok, thanks - i will change gear oil.

  11. Usually change the gear oil in the lower unit, if the motor will be stored outside it prevents any water in the lower unit from freezing. Do it anyway, verify the old oil is not contaminated with water(bad seal)(remove prop, check for monofiliment line that can ruin prop seal)

While running, spray fogging oil into the carbs through the air intakes till the motor stalls, this lubricates the cylinders and crankcase for storage.

If not draining all fuel, add fuel stabilizer while running to ensure it gets into the engine.

I changed gear oil last month, since that I was out twice. Do I still need to change it?

If basement is not a good place i can keep it in garage. I was thinking that basement is better place.

Where can i get this fogging oil, that is the name for it?

    How to put it properly???

    Thanks,

  12. Hi guys,

Not so far ago i bought my first boat with 9.9 hp 2-stroke suzuki(1986). I am planning to do one more fishing trip and winterize the boat after that.

I will put motor in the basement. I would like to know what needs to be done to it?

I know that i have to burn all gasoline, but other than that what else needs to be done?

    Thanks for advise guys.
