A young black bear came out early and almost died from starvation.

Not something you would expect to see while ice fishing in the middle of winter.

But with the weird winter we've been having, I expected to hear of at least one or two situations like this.

It's the first story on the news for Monday Feb 6th.

Sounds like the bear is going to be just fine.

  2. The ger (the original Mongolian term), or the yurt (in Russian), is the traditional dwelling of the Mongols and, in general, that of nomadic people in Central Asia. So Terry guy ,they both the same .. But what you stayed in N.A.W.was nither

No kidding. We poked fun at that all weekend. A true yurt is supposed to be portable. It would take a week to break this thing down, and a flat bed truck to move it. In no way, shape or form is this a traditional dwelling of a nomad..

But it was a comfy and warm place to stay.

I think the best part was sitting on the lake in pitch black dark with the yotes howling all around you.

Good thing I had bud the spud!

  3. A yurt is a semi-perminant tent structure. This one aint going no where.

Parks Canada have been putting them out at select campe sites around Ontario. It's a good way to get people out in nature that don't like "roughing" it.. If you call camping at a national part "roughing" it.. I don't :canadian:

This one is at Bruce Peninsula National Park. They have 10 of them.

  4. I was going to post earlier to tell you to get a pair of re-issue combat boots for $60. But thought I might get flammed by the hard core hikers. But now that some others have mentioned it :whistling: :whistling:

I use a pair of combat boots for SAR, and put them thru absolute hell . They are also my primary hunting boot. And for the whopping $57 I paid for them, I don't really care if I wreck them. The Vibram sole is great.

Bought a comfy pair of insoles, and some wax polish. They are the most waterproof boot I've warn (rubber boots excluded).

I suppose if you where doing a 100km trek, something lighter would be nice.. But I usually stick to the weekend events.

  5. I very good long time friend had a chance to rent a Yurt for a weekend during the off-season. The original plan was to have 3 couples camp out the weekend in a Yurt. But some last minute changes happened. Only two of us could make it.

When I got to his place, I was (as always) warmly greeted by his two dogs. they where very interested in the minnows.

We packed up a few last things, then headed over to the Yurt. Check out these pictures. What a cool way to spend the weekend! Wood stove, drop down double bed, bunk beds (double on bottom, single on top) table set for 4, storage cabinets , sky light, 3-tiered patio with a bar and BBQ. And to boot, it was less the 30' from the water!! And it came with a sleigh for dragging our gear on to the ice :thumbsup_anim:

You can see the water through the trees..

    14.jpg

The wood stove (which was way over sized for the Yurt.. It was 20° inside all weekend)

    13.jpg

The sky-light. (which can open for more ventilation)

    Toasty fire!

This little guy was very cool. A fan that runs from the heat generated from the fire. Made in Canada. This thing ran all weekend, no batteries or nothing. Very cool.

We made it out fishing, and managed two eater pickerel. Crappy cell phone pics at night.. No flash :wallbash:

The next morning we tried a different area and ended up sitting on a school of perch for a few hours. Biggest was 11.5". Took home 7 for lunch.

This will be my last full weekend long fishing trip for the year. Just day trips from now on.

Camping in the yurt was awesome. I would do it again in a heartbeat. But next time I'm calling top bunk. I woke up a few times at night to move around and WHALED my head on the support logs for the top bunk.... :wallbash: literally..

I've been bugging my buddy to join OFC.. Hopefully he does. He's an avid outdoorsman, and could contribute a lot to this community.. I'll keep buggin him!

  6. That fold out rest/seat/what have you.. that's slick. Jen could probably use an adaptation of that as a cane and a butt rest. More food for thought in the shop....

If you want to get a closer look, I can drop it by your shop some time. Or if your comin down 93 and want to drop in to my new place. :D Fire me a PM.. I'm not around much, but I'm sure we could work something out.

The seat telescopes out to about 8 different set lengths. It could even be used as a crutch if needed. It would be simple to make with the right equipment.

  7. Shmuck .....LOL....that was just the other day //////// was'nt it....

You know Ron.. Having flash backs is an early sign of Dementia.

You should talk to your doctor about that.

And Bush.. I've got a ways to go yet before I hit the big Five-Oh. But I hope that when I get there, there's still some places I can go to relax in the peace and quiet. Ones that I don't have to drive a day to get to!

  8. If the ferrules still fit OK with no wobble and there's no delamination of the bamboo (splits along the length between the pieces of bamboo) I'd fish it - start with a few panfish and see how it goes - perhaps pair it with something like this http://www.ebay.ca/itm/GARCIA-MITCHELL-306-REEL-MINTY-Completely-Original-INCLUDES-VERY-NICE-HANDLE-/400272781309?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_2&hash=item5d321deffd. FWIW my fly rod is about 2mm diameter at the tip and it's a 6wt so not exactly light. It won't be as fast actioned as a graphite rod but the backbone will still be there!

I think my other Grandpa has some really old reels in the boat house. I'll grab one next time I'm up and give it a whirl.

    Thanks eh!

Does any know the make? I think it is a Horrocks Ibbotson

How about the rough age of this rod? 50's

What would an old rod like this be worth in this condition? About $20 - $30 bucks.

Nice rod. It may of actually been a 4 pc at one time. Not 100% sure, but there may of been another butt section with a fly reel seat.

All the ones I've researched on line are 4 peace. Either this one is rare, or it's missing a peace.

The orientation of the handle can be flipped around for fly fishing.

BAH! My Dad's 88 and he's probably in better shape than I am, tell your Grandpa to keep going full-tilt! The only thing the Grim Reaper deserves is a giant middle finger!

Ah yes, more properly called a 'shooting stick'. I have one too, haven't got around to using it yet but your post has just given me a nudge.

I was thinking it would be good for a shooting rest.

Thanks for the comments to far everyone :thumbsup_anim:

  9. I don't know about everyone else but that plate is the best. Wall mounts and such are cool but this was made by his hands and is the real keepsake to remember him by. Hell, if I were you, I'd lay claim to all the art work he made ;)

It's good to see you're spending time with him and I bet he has some good stories as well.

    I couldn't agree more :thumbsup_anim:

He caught all the fish, and created all the wall mounts him self, with the help of my uncle. So they have some serious family value to them as well.

It's awesome having an artist in the family. He has about 60 paintings in his house, and each family member has another 5 or 10 each.

All the paintings have some sort of memory behind them. He's got about a dozen oil paintings that he did by looking at pictures of where we used to live up in Pickle Lake. I would really love to get a couple of them for my new house. Even if I have to buy them from him.

He's got about 10 more if the copper dishes too.

    That's what happens when you're a work-aholic, but you retire at 55!!
