  1. yup fun day on the water

but I need heaver socks in my waders dang it was cold on the feet

LOL I am going in the morning just to fish on a pier for a couple hours.... I PACKED the winter leggings and the parka. Too old to be cold is my motto now. I am also going to wear the boots with liners too. Don't even care who laughs at me, I figure I can fish better without my teeth chattering. LOL.

I was going wading out in the lake and fish the beach until my buddy remembered his pair of waders has a huge hole in the seam where things would get mighty uncomfortable LOL. He is driving, so the pier it is.

  2. One I was pier fishing for perch on Lake Erie and the bite was pretty decent... One of the older regulars there is just about to call it a day when he gets a bite. His rod is bent a lot more than normal and line starts peeling for a second or two. Everybody around takes notice and figures he has a sheepie. He starts to pull it up though, which is unusual we generally help by someone grabbing the leader, and pulling up the sheepies, so nothing breaks...

So up comes his rig with 3 decent perch, with another rig wrapped up in his sinker with 2 live perch, followed by yet another rig with 2 perch was very much alive and the other one was putrefied. Not bad 6 fish at a time... Of course we then had a good natured discussion about whether he should have to throw back 2 as you are only allowed 4 hooks at a time LOL.

  3. Sunday is going to be bird frying day.

Will it be ok to strain back in the used oil with the new? I don't think I,ll need to use the whole jug for my bird .

I might even just buy a large water jug and dump it out and use that for the used oil.

I wouldn't mix the used and new oil unless you absolutely have too. If you check with local restaurants or even instore bakeries they might have used plastic pails with lids you could use to store the used oil in. Just make sure the pail is well rinsed with no soap residue and dry.

  4. Yeah, some of that water they fished looking incredible.

Yes then again we didn't get to see what was left on the cutting room floor. I wonder with the massive program the States have to restore rivers by removing dams and cleaning them up, if the fishing will eventually get better than it was in the 80's.

It was also interesting how Alex knew just where to go in and get off a river so they didn't arrested or shot back in the old days... My Grandfather was a hunter, trapper, fisherman and gatherer who was pretty much the same around here. He definitely always got permission when he could but would think nothing of walking 2 or 3 concessions in the river bed so he could claim he was only using the navigable public access allowed under common law. Not sure how that law works in the States though and it is pretty much been eroded here at to be meaningless when a lot of cops don't know who is right or wrong when a dispute comes up.

  5. I do a lot of preserves every year. Apples are out now because of their relatively good availability all year.

Very true in a good year, and in a bad year the expense of sourcing them makes it way too expensive to bother with... The only way I would bother is if you find some wild crab apples for jelly, or if you have a source for size seconds at a local orchard. Otherwise you aren't going save much.

When I was a young lad , down on the farm, we had an apple tree that was my job to pick up any apples that had fallen...Not sure what kind they were but they were as hard as a rock...

My great aunt (80 yrs +) would make applesauce and nine times out of ten she would scortch it...it got so I enjoyed it better that way...LOL

It is kind of amazing what people get used to LOL.

  6. That looked like Colorado, he most likely came back up downstream somewhere.

Yeah you are probably right, all I can say is better him than me....

Those sort of stunts were OK when I young enough to heal right from broken bones. When you hit 50 you got to start thinking intentionally adding a permanent limp isn't worth it for a couple of fish pictures... Although the river looked amazing for it. Not mention by the time I got to the bottom I would be holding a busted rod and all my gear would have come out of my vest as I cartwheeled down the slope.

  7. It reminded me of a few fishing trips I have been on... Except for the scenery, and tons of fish being caught. BC isn't all mushroom forests and grow ops I guess LOL.

I find it confusing when someone won't switch gear or tactics to what is working.... Then again I like catching fish so if I see something working I change up to as close as that with what I have with me. Fish goeth before pride LOL. On the other hand I will also gladly retie anyone's gear who is with me to what I am using, if I am having good luck and they aren't.

The biggest question I have is where, did the helicopter pick up the guy after he ran down the side of that gorge to fish that river near the beginning, or did he crawl back up? LOL

  8. Have you thought about making up and freezing some apple dumplings? I like them because it is something a little different, and you can have them on hand as something quick and easy in the freezer for a great dessert, when people drop in over the holidays.

The best apples to use are Ida Reds then Courtlands as either will retain their shape better than other varieties... Take a few apples peel and core them. Then either make your own pie dough, or use frozen shells. A 9" or 10" shell will cover 3 apples. I just thaw a frozen shell then take it out of the tin. Place it the counter on a small amount of flour. I cut it into 3 then shape one of those triangles over the cored peeled apple leaving the hole from the corer uncovered. Then they go into a container deep enough to hold them. I fill the the container with as many apples as it will hold and then pour into each apple a couple raisins, some chopped pecans, then a mixture of cinnamon sugar right to the top of the apple. Cinnamon sugar is just 2 cups of white sugar. 1 to 1.5 tbsp ground cinnamon well mixed, you can add 1 tsp ground ginger and 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg, and a bit of mace) From frozen they take around an hour at 350 F in a preheated oven. Test the apple with a small knife to make sure it is cooked to your liking. Place the baked apple dumpling in a soup bowl and cover with 2 to 3 ozs of Rum sauce.

    Rum sauce

    1.5 Cups of Brown Sugar

3 Cups of Water Reserve 1/2 cup for slurry

    3 ozs of Butter

    1/4 cup of cornstarch

Rum or Rum flavouring to taste

    Pinch of salt

Put the Brown sugar 2.5 cups of water and butter in a large sauce pan. Bring to a boil. Make a slurry with the 1/2 cup of Cold water and the 1/4 cup cornstarch in bowl. Add the slurry slowly to the boiling mixture in the pot and stir with a whisk cooking on medium until the sauce thickens. When thick remove from heat add in small amount of rum and the pinch of salt. Serve warm over the apple dumpling Any sauce you left over can be stored for up a couple weeks in a clean dry container in the fridge. If you plan to store the sauce make sure you don't get any drops of water in it as one drop will cause the sauce to mold in a day or two.

  9. One thing i forgot to add is that id be comfortable in the $600 range.............but know that it could, and may likely climb toward the $800-1000 range. Id have to be talked into $800 and above lol

Check out this forum the people there are merciless when it comes to stretching a budget to get the most value for money spent.... There should be some great tips on what camera to choose and where to get it for the best prices if you go to the hot deals section of the same website. If it is a deal anywhere North America it will probably be listed there. Also they tend to be the first site to post Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals in Canada.

As others have mentioned the camera is just the beginning, it is all the other add ons that drive the price up. On this site should point you the right direction to save on all of it.

  10. The hook is the first point of contact between you and a fish. I've caught so many steelhead that I couldnt care to count, but it's those big ones where you better hope that your gear is on point or you can can kiss those 15-20lb chromers goodbye. Only Owners for me. Strongest hook on the market in my opinion.

So true... hook strength is everything.

I was at a local fishing store a few years ago and this guy was in and we started talking to the owner about breakoffs. The guy was having a problem with hooking up with lumber in the rivers he was fishing and then breaking off leaders. He was using much higher line test than I or the owner went with and we snap tested some he had brought in and all seemed good with the line... So the owner said he had this BRAND new hook from Raven specially designed to bend and then come out in such situations. The guy grabs a pack saying GREAT!!!!

Now we all know what happened... About a week later I run into the guy who bought the hooks pier fishing. He had 3 straightened hooks in about an hour. He was going to go and tear the owner of the store a new one. I asked why? You bought those hooks to fish in creeks with tons of logs and branches in them not off a pier, where there is nothing to break off on... He packed up and left he was so mad. LOL

  11. The China sites do have some good quality products for good pricing, if you can get direct from source. It only makes sense every middleman doubles the price of anything he moves or he goes broke and does something else... I know a guy I met fishing a few times, who makes walleye rigs and he said when he found out the contact info of the Chinese company for the exact same supplies he had been buying in online from the States his costs dropped 60% for the hardware, shipping was free (where it had been almost as much as the cost of the product) and no brokerage fees now because they will ship it to the customs office near him which the U.S. supplier wouldn't do. So now he clears it himself for the nominal fee customs charges and the duty. I asked him did he drop the price to his customers for the finished product he just laughed and laughed...

The only downsides to anything I have ordered is the long wait time for free shipping, and if you like something you might not be able to order it again. I got 30 packages that had 2 each of the BEST clip on chemical lights I have ever used for .30 a pack. I didn't want to order more in case they were crap. As soon as I got them and found out how good they were I tried to reorder 100 packages. The link didn't work anymore... I found other sites that had the product listed for about 40% more which was still a great deal, but they were all sold out too. Just seemed strange someone spent the time and money to develop and perfect the product with packaging then it just seemed to have disappeared.

  12. The little water left in the pot after you dump it out will not hurt. Remember you will be heating the oil from room temp. When the oil reaches 212F the water will evaporate and not violently. Water going into oil 212F and above is not good at all

Not trying to start something here but....

The thing is any amount of water in their expensive oil is going to immediately start to break down that oil... so why not spend 20 seconds with paper towels drying the pot first, just to protect their investment?

You are right that a little bit leftover likely won't cause a fire (that was humor) but it can cause some interesting burns if you are standing too close while it heats up. IT will splatter which pure oil won't and that is based on over 30yrs working in kitchens...

  13. So how about this comment? Not centering out the poster, just asking .

Definitely, is GMO whether it is garbage or not is debatable. I can virtually guarantee if you have eaten in a restaurant in the last 10yrs and had fried more than twice you probably had it it fried in canola oil.

I don't know what genetically modified means to most people. I do know both my grandfathers who were great gardeners of both flowers and food. Genetically modified everything they grew, by only keeping seeds from any plants that had the traits they wanted to encourage the most. One of them used to do all sorts of cross pollinating and other tricks to get the results he wanted.

This guy agrees with what they did too...

  14. We always did 5 min per pound. Correct amount of oil is key. Put the bird in and fill with water till it's completely submerged. Take out bird and note how much water is in the pot. Dump water and fill to about half an inch to one inch below the water mark to allow for oil expansion when it heats.

Awesome idea just sure you DRY the pot completely before you put the oil in though... Water and oil in a fryer not good unless you want to see the fire department LOL.
