Next year I only plan on getting a pair of breathable waders with wading boots and a Okuma Center Pin reel

  2. I am checking on the shipping and going to give it a go if they use the USPS to ship. I hope they are better than the arctic shield ones I paid 60 bucks for... I don't see how they could be worse though when those ones don't work as good as 5 dollar ones from Walmart.

edited "I just got word back from the site and they want 15.95 US for shipping so if anyone knows of a place anywhere in the London, Woodstock, Kitchener, Cambridge, Guelph area that has them for less than 50 bucks Canadian please let me know...."

  3. I started out with an 11.5 ft Shakespeare Catera might be called an Agility this year though. It CAN do it all not PERFECTLY mind you but well enough for the 55 bucks it will cost you at LeBarons. It is long enough for drifting although most will tell you to get at least a 13 footer but you sure can't chuck spoons with any 13 footer I have ever seen. An 11.5 foot Catera/Agility comes with double footed guides except for the last 4 so it has the backbone for salmon and chucking those heavy spoons while the tip is sensitive enough for bottom bouncing and drifting rainbows. I can't say enough about mine as it has proven itself time and time again off the piers with huge salmon and in the rivers with 3lb bows.....

Of course since it doesn't do everything "perfectly" I have added 3 other rods to round out my arsenal so be prepared to keep spending if you really get into it LOL.

If you plan on never chucking a spoon and want to spend a little more for a great noodle rod get yourself a "green" Dick Swan Noodle Rod Company rod if you can find one. You won't be disappointed with that one either but I sure wouldn't chuck a spoon with mine.

  4. I can't tell you what gloves or mitts are good because I haven't found a single pair that do the job while fishing.

I thought I was going to be set when I forked out 60 bucks for a pair of Arctic Shield System gloves. DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME OR MONEY on this product for fishing. The outer mitt is somewhat water proof but the inner glove isn't even water resistant so if you touch your line or bait the glove gets soaked very quickly and your then hands freeze. They aren't even warm when they are dry anyhow so it doesn't matter. The only way to cope I find is that I carry 4 pairs when fishing in winter. 2 Neoprene which are great because they are water proof until you get them wet from the inside by jamming wet hands inside them to warm yourself without using a towel as mentioned because who has the brain power to think about drying your hands everytime? I don't LOL. So if it isn't too cold find I can sometimes get by using just 2 pairs of the neoprene one after the other... If it is really cold I have one pair of fleece lined thinsulate cheapie flap mitts that are my go to gloves when it is cold because even when wet they are twice as warm as the Arctic Shield gloves and only cost 6 bucks. Last resort is a pair of dollar store thinsulate gloves that tell me when I pull them out it is time for me to pull out and head home, unless the fishing is nonstop which tends to keep me warm LOL.

I am eyeing a set of gloves from Mark's that claim to be waterproof and for extreme weather if I get them I will post my results.

I got my dad a pair of gortex extreme weather gloves in the late 80's that were on sale for 49.99 marked down in the summer from 125.00 and he can't even have them on his hands for more than 20 or 30 minutes at a time because his hands roast in them.... I wish I could find another pair but they would probably run over 200.00 bucks now.

One other thing I do is I carry 4 reusable hand warmers from Lee Valley and they are the best thing I have found for extreme cold. Slip one in each glove and your hands will be toasty even in wet gloves for at least an hour.

  5. ....The only dumb thing here is leaving a rod in the water unattended, you should of let the fish drag it in.

You may also have been in trouble with the MNR if they'd been around for fishing with two lines. I know, I know you only tried to help your friend, MNR would have seen it differently.

Spiel- The MNR could NOT HAVE done a thing because at the time my line was safely on the beach not near the water, but I take your point....

  6. There was a post on the board recently that got me thinking about how other people handle situations like this.

Last week the guy who taught me how to fish for chrome and I were out. I had just landed a 3lb male and we decided to move. He moved first, had cast out tightened the line and turned to walk back to get his net and cooler bag. I was walking towards my new spot and as I passed him I noticed his rod was moving but it looked his small sinker had just settled with the current. I didn't say anything because I didn't want to look stupid if it wasn't a fish. By this time he is about 30ft away and not even looking over his shoulder. I get about 5ft from his rod and it really starts to dance. I manage to grap the butt when it is about 10 inches off the ground and the whole rod is about 2 seconds from going swimming. I set the hook and yell fish on. He yells back "You $@#*" Obviously assuming I had another fish on my gear. I laugh and ask, What are you talking about? Then admit to him, "It's on your line therefore your fish!!!". He drops the net and everything and runs over to take the rod. He lands a beautiful 6lb female bow. Despite my poor netting techniques LOL. I find out after that NO ONE else he fishes with ever gives up a rod when they set the hook no matter who's rod..... I thought it was the right thing to do especially since he had done the same thing for me last November on the very first bow I ever caught. Not to mention the fact that I had gotten a fish minutes before and the last 3 times we had been out while he had gone 5 trips and not caught one....

I was amazed at the reaction of a lot of people who told me how dumb I was for handing over the rod. I really wouldn't have felt right not handing it over though.

So I was just wondering what do people on here do when this happens to them?
