Massive Mayfly Hatch of “Biblical Proportions” Triggers a Three-Car Crash

by Ross Purnell, Editor   |  July 23rd, 20140

A massive mayfly hatch on the Mississippi River in the La Crosse, Wisconsin area July 20, 2014, was described as a insect infestation of “biblical proportions” so intense that it made driving in the region difficult and even dangerous. Poor visibility and slippery roads (due to mayflies) were blamed for a three-vehicle accident on the Hwy. 63 bridge linking Red Wing and Hager City, Wisconsin, that left one person hospitalized.
The hatch captured on the National Weather Service’s (NWS) Doppler radar looks like a rain storm, but is actually a cloud of Hexagenia bilineata mayflies stretching from Redwing Minnesota in the north to to Prairie du Chien Wisconsin.

According to the NWS: “The radar detected the flies about 8:45 pm, emanating from the river (the source) with echo values similar to that of light-moderate rain (35-40 dBZ). With a general south-to-north wind flow above the surface, the mayflies quickly moved north once in the air. As the flies dispersed moving north-northeast, they also gained altitude with some of the echo being detected as far north as Black River Falls and as high as 2,500 feet above ground.
“By late evening, mayflies were swarming in La Crosse, La Crescent, Stoddard and points up and down the river. While the emergence of mayflies from their river bottom mud dwelling can occur at various times through the warm season depending on the species, this particular emergence was that of the larger black/brown bilineata species. The radar loop shows the reflected radar energy (reflectivity) from 835 pm to just after midnight. The higher the values (greens to yellows) indicate greater concentrations of flies.”
Last year along the Mississippi, similar but less intense hatches of the same species occurred on June 15, 18 and 25, and on July 14.
June 23, 2012 was the last hatch of this size. That event was also termed “massive” by the NWS, and it too caused collisions and required snowplows for cleanup duty.
According to the NWS, the heavy hatches in recent years are the result of environmental protections that are resulting in cleaner water and better habitat for the burrowing mayflies.

The Maple Leafs nearly completely transposed their front office by firing assistant general managers Claude Loiselle and Dave Poulin and hiring Kyle Dubas, dubbed by many as the Billy Beane of hockey.

The hiring of Dubas, the 28-year-old GM of the OHL Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds, is tantamount to a turnaround in the direction of the team to one that favours the advanced-stat approach that is gaining traction in the sport.

“Kyle is a young executive that has made a strong name for himself in hockey with a progressive style, work ethic and maturation beyond his years,” said Toronto Maple Leafs president Brendan Shanahan said in a press release. “He has a fresh approach that we feel will benefit our club for years to come.”

Beane’s stats-based approach to baseball management helped keep the under-funded Oakland Athletics in playoff contention and turned into the movie Moneyball.

    FROM THE ARCHIVES:

Dubas, a native of Sault Ste. Marie was a hockey operations assistant at the age of 14 with the Greyhounds, and then later worked as a scout for the club while enrolled at Brock University’s Sports Management Program. His grandfather, Walter, served as head coach of the Greyhounds from 1960-1967.

Upon graduation, Dubas became the youngest player agent certified by the NHL Players’ Association with Uptown Sports Management.

“The chance to work for the Toronto Maple Leafs is like a dream come true,” said Dubas in the release. “I’m truly excited to begin helping this team win and learn from men like Brendan Shanahan and Dave Nonis. I’m very thankful for this opportunity, but equally grateful to the Greyhounds organization and the city of Sault Ste. Marie for helping put me in this position. The Leafs are focused on building a team that will enjoy long-term success and I am excited to play a role in it.”

Dubas took the Greyhounds, a hockey organization that finished out of the playoffs in his first season, to finishing first in the OHL’s West Division last season with a 44-17-2-5 record.

“We’re excited about the addition of an up-and-coming hockey executive in Kyle,” said GM Dave Nonis. “He is an innovative thinker that will bring enthusiasm and impressive abilities to our club. His work ethic, character and demonstrated leadership in Sault Ste. Marie make for a valuable combination that will certainly have a positive impact on our organization in many ways.”

  3.

Well let me tell ya a story here. LOL

I have had boats of many types. Tinnys (4 of them) Last one being a 14 ft deep sylvan that I had all rigged out for bass fishing and down rigg,n. Owned Ranger Bass boat for 4 yrs and a Bayliner cuddy for two.. I had a truck to tow and spot to keep all these boats at one time. The bayliner I was paying alot to keep it stored. I had to pay cuz we moved into a condo 6 years ago. I have thought of getting a sports pal or a yak,but no place to keep it.

These float about boats/tubes deflate and can be packed away in a corner pretty much. Both my float tube and my new to me pontoon, fit in the back seat of my Dodge Avenger. My trunk is a traveling tackle box. I can hit anyone spot and fish any fish. Well almost. I need to add musky gear.LOL

I can leave any given morning,go for a drive and come upon a fishing hole. Stop, pull out the rig, blow it up, grab a couple of rods, a plano box that has baits that will work for this spot, and bobs your uncle. Both rigs I can have set up and in the water in 15 minutes. 12volt pump makes it that fast.

The best part of the whole experience of being on the water with these,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Words cant explain it. You just have to get out there in them and experience it for yourself.

May not be for eveyone, but they work for me, and I have a blast fishing from them.

Hope that helps with your question.

Not only that but you can add running white water in the toon's too.

They are a great river fishing tool. Try floating the Credit, Saugeen or Ganny in a tinny!!! :whistling:
