  1. Police searching for boy who fell from boat

CAMPBELLFORD – Northumberland OPP are looking for a missing 13-year-old boy after he fell out of a boat on the Trent River, south of Campbellford, on Saturday night.

The boy was a passenger when he fell out of the boat in rough water conditions, police say. He was not wearing a life jacket.

Police are currently searching for the boy on the river about 1.5 kilometres south of Campbellford.

    Police divers are on scene.

    --------------------------------------------

I hate to be the driver of that boat - rough waters and no life jacket on a 13 year old doesn't add up to be something positive. Will people ever learn that if they aren't being worn, they won't ever save a life?

Shameful and completely preventable. I hope for the best, but expect the worst.

  2. Ideally you should have some decent release gear - cutters and long nose pliers at the least. I wouldn't expect you to go out and drop big bucks on a cradles or landing net though.

Pigeon is a fairly decent sized lake. What type of boat do you have and what area of the lake will you be on?

  3. With GPS being on virtually every boat, speedometers are useless. As far as I'm concerned, a speedometer gauge on a dash serves to fill an esthetic gap next to the RPM gauge. Sounds pretty crude but that's my opinion.

Some of the bassboat manuafacturers (Triton and Ranger, I think) are no longer instaling speedos in the dash in favour of factory installed larger screen GPS units in dash. At least on the higer-end models.

They really are useless in a boat.

RPM guarge is much more important, followed by water pressure.

  4. It's going to strengthen the underground economy even more than the GST did. So many "handymen" running around now working cash jobs and it's going to get worse now. So much for the legit tax collecting and tax paying contractors.

The only thing you can do with the underground economy is report the offenders. Many that partake are not the kind of people you would want doing business anyway. If they cut corners on taxes, just think of the corners they cut in actually doing the job!

The underground econ. costs us all money as it takes tax revenue directly from healthcare and everything else legitimate taxpayers support. The underground econ. is the reason our taxes are so high as it is. All the government has to do is introduce rewards for reporting these people and we would be further ahead. If everyone were to legitimately pay the taxes they owe, we wouldn't be in the situation we are in with such high income and excise taxes.

Next time anyone says they will accept cash, you should get a discount of at least 40%, not just the 13% HST. Think about the income taxes the fraudster is saving as well.

We should have a forum on OFC to report underground econ. to Michael Brown - I'm sure he would be interested in paying a visit to unscroupulous business owners.

  5. I am not looking forward to paying more in tax, that is a given, but I do understand that the taxes we pay go toward to standard of living.

If we weren't going to be paying more through the HST, we would be paying more income tax - it is as simple as that.

Until the govvernment, whether it be Liberal, NDP or conservative can figure out a way to control spending, the only other alternative is to increase taxes or other revenues (fines etc.).

There is a spending problem somewhere along the lines, but no government wants to cut services to save money. A huge percentage of the budget is healthcare - no government will cut service there. Public sector wages - nope, unions are too powerful. Education - get a life, the teachers will go mad if wages are cut.

The HST is a necessary evil with the way spending is out of control. In the purest form it is just another way to redistribute wealth. Those that make more, spend more and will pay more tax, both HST and income tax. Those tax revenues are then used to pay for social programs and healthcare that benefit all levels of income earners.

Yes, the result is some things are now taxed more heavily, but for the majority of items, the tax rate stays the same - it is just the more popular items that people use more of (e.g. gas and heating oil) that get the most attention. For most people the impact is probably smaller than a 0.5% increase in income tax would be (though I doubt there'd be nearly as much backlash about income tax rates going up 0.5%)

Am I happy about the HST - no way, but unfortunately there is no way to stop it. The Liberals will get voted out over it, that's certain, but I guarantee no other government will come in and repeal it without an offseting increase in income taxes.

  6. I wouldn't even worry about fixing or replacing the speedo in your boat. They aren't accurate at all. I'm with Lew on this one - GPS all the way, no matter what.

Speedos really shouldn't even be in a boat since they are so inaccurate.

  7. Costco usually has some good quality rainsuits on sale for all seasons. I picked up a wetskins suit a couple of years ago, it was billed as a fall suit. Full, long jacket with a zip-out fleece liner. Double walled pants. Has a great hood with lanyards to hunker down if required.

I have worn the jacket as a winter coat one more than one occasion, so it is warm. Zip out the fleece and use it in the spring or fall, and use the shell in spring without the fleece.

Really a great suit and it was only about $70 from what I remember. Mine is black and orange.

  8. Hi guys does anyone have this boat? How do they like it. I can't find many reviews on it. What do you guys think of it for a multi-species boat. Thanks

Would be a fairly tight squeeze with 3+ people in that boat. Probably a good size for a max. of two people.

I do like triton boats - I have one, but I prefer their bass boats vs. the deep-v multi species versions.

  9. 1) Buy used

    2) Buy in the US

It is really not that hard and will save you a lot of cash. For the investment of a half-day of time to research the process and the time to go down and get it, you will be very happy with the product and savings.

Check out www.boattraderonline.com and walleyecentral. There are tens of dozens of us based used boat sites.

    Good luck.

  10. Caught some on pigeon when the water temp was still in the mid-60's. Haven't been out since the water temp has been higher.

Fished some great looking weed, but nothing to show for it. Water was really clear.

Only time we were able to get any, was over a shallow sand bottom that was all churned up with the wind. They were liking the stained water. We did well, each got our limit and threw back 2-3 that were under the slot. Best day of walleye fishing I have ever had.

Look for the stained water, IMO.

  11. Sorry for your troubles, must be really frustrating.

It is no secret Tracker (and Nitro) don't have the best made boats, or the best customer service. The boats are made to adhere to a price point, that's it, and they sell lots of them because of it. Unfortunately, many people have to deal with poor quality and bad service after saving some bucks up front. Great for those that don't get a lemon, bad for those that do.

  12. Many fast water areas are sanctuaries in the Kawarthas. The Otonabee River is also closed from lock 19 to bensfort bridge. Always opens a week after.

Remember the slot size, basically 14-19 inches (rounding up on the low end, down on the high end), and only keep 4 with a sport license, only 1 with a conservation license (I think).
