  1. Not sure I'm fully for the idea for the playoff. The whole show up to this point was about multi-species and now they limit it to ONLY walleye? Kinda lame, IMO. They could have picked a different target species for each period or something. Mix it up a bit.

    Not saying I won't watch. It's still entertaining :D

  2. All arguments aside. One thing I wont do is fish without glasses.

Yeah they help. But heaven forbid a bad hookset and a lure flys at your face.

Wear your $300 glasses or your $20 glasses

Good point. Or if you go fishing with my wife.

And what were you doing fishing with my wife?

  3. Nothing doing at any of my spring shore fishing crappie or perch spots yet Bruce. Glad to hear someone is getting out and getting bit.

Same here. Ice and snow have meant I might be chasing trout before I find time to go for crappie.

  4. I have to agree with the silver mirror in the above chart, but would also say copper is most useful if you're fishing dirtier/muddier water.

As for price point, the total cost doesn't matter as long as they're actually polarized. Most of the time once you're over the $100 point you're paying for the frames and/or the brand. Even though I spent like $200 on the Ray Bans in my avatar, I still managed to have them fall out of my shirt pocket and 3 m deep into a sanitary manhole. Although they did last me like 3 years to that point, longer than any pair of sunglasses to date, and the only time up until then that I've spent more than like $50 on sunglasses. If I spend more money on them I'm going to take better care of them.

  5. Good game yesterday. Fun pitching duel to watch and the right team came out on tip. Stroman showing he's mature enough to be an ace and Archer showing off the strikeout machine he is.

I will admit too, even being the huge baseball fan I am, I'm usually doing something else while watching the game. Be it playing with my tablet or reading a book, or have it on the radio while I mess about in the garage. Blue Jays in 30 is the best idea they've had at Sportsnet in a long time.

  6. I have been to Lac Kikwissi four or five times in the past 10-or-so years. The owner is Serge Gaudet and he is a class act in every respect. One year I left something behind and he dropped it off to me in Petawawa a few months later on his way to Ottawa.

We have never gone in prime season, usually defined as close to opening weekend in May and again in early Fall. We have always gone mid-summer, usually July to August, and the fishing is still absolutely amazing. We do this because the kids are in school.

There are great opportunities to catch many and large walleye and northern pike. My personal best is an 11-pound walleye (photo attached) caught right after sunset, but to give you some idea how good the fishing really is my brother and my then 10-year-old son went trolling with floating Rapalas mid-afternoon in July. The temperature and sun were way too much for this softie, so they went out by themselves and came back an hour later having caught and released 13 walleye in a shallow bay behind the cabin. Apparently the deep part of the lake also has some lakers, but I was there for the walleye and jack fish.

Best time for walleye is of course is sunset to sunrise. If you find a decent spot (ask Serge), you can expect 20 walleye per boat per launch from the dock (20 in the morning, 20 in the evening, etc.). I have heard that this can be 100+ in May and September, but I’m more than happy to have good weather, lots of quality fishing and some really nice time with the family.

There are several cabins near the main lodge, but I suggest one of the three outpost cabins for peace and quiet. S1 and S2 are close to the great fishing spots and part of the main lake, and S3 is in Little Kikwissi (accessible by boat through a shallow channel) and all are well-equipped with bunk beds, kitchen with hot and cold water, stove, oven, and 2 propane fridges as well as showers and an outhouse.

You can access Kikwissi by car or truck and no problem bringing a boat and trailer. I brought mine from Petawawa last year. You can also rent the boats and motors from Serge and they are nice 16’ fibreglass deals with 15 hp 2-stroke engines - perfect for the size of the lake. Bring a portable fish finder, landing nets and life jackets. There are fish cleaning stations beside the docks at the cabins. They are screened in but the mosquitoes have never been bad at S1 or S2 because of the breeze from the lake. The mosquitoes at the main cabin have been unbearable when we arrived, but we were pleasantly surprised at how sparse they became once we got to the outpost cabins. I can’t speak to S3 because we never stayed there overnight. The swimming is great mid-summer. You won’t find a cleaner lake anywhere. Last year we had 8 in total – Dad, brother, me, 2 nephews, daughter, son and step-son and no one complained once about being bored – not even the 6-year-old. The stars are magnificent if the sky is clear. Cabins, boats and equipment are all well-maintained and Serge will come and drop in to see how you are doing if you want. All-in-all the first outpost cabin is about a 30 minute boat ride from the main lodge with one of Serge’s boats loaded with two people and our gear. It’s another 15 minutes to S2 and another twenty or so to S3. Incredible scenery, wilderness and peacefulness.

That sounds like one hell of an endorsement. Might consider this place next spring if we don't like the one we're going to this year.

  7. Doing my best to leave politics out of this... all I can say is that his heart always seemed to be in the right place. Whether or not his actions helped matters is another issue.

He will definitely be missed. Regardless of what you think of him he was too young to go.

  8. Has Uncut Angling made an episode since 39 hours? I check back every so often but there isn't ever anything on there.

As for TV shows, the Saturday morning Global TV lineup might as well be listed as paid programming. The only show on there that comes close to being educational is Fishin' Canada. But after watching it I get this odd urge to buy a Ram with Cooper Tires and drive to Sail. But Facts of Fishing is on Saturday morning on Sportsnet360 which makes it nice because I don't even need to pay attention to see the start of it as I'm watching sports highlights lol.

  9. I'm going to agree with Rizzo here. I usually give people the benefit of the doubt and would assume they're not being spiteful to you. Calling from NWT they likely didn't recognize the area code and thought it was a scammer. Stay calm and try to talk to a manager. Getting worked up and calling everyone from the MP/MPP to the Queen of England or the media or the police isn't going to make things better.

  10. Netminder, if you are thinking about hitting Erie for some beauty Smallies drop me a PM and I will be able to get you onto some fish and where to launch from here.

If anyone does fish Erie for Smallies with live bait a live leech will out fish live minnows on any day other than fall, then it's the largest minnow you can get. Even a black twister tail grub Carolina, California, Jig and stinger rig or actually any style weight and to get the presentation down will do the trick with an artificial leech. I have used even a Pickerel rig with 2 leaches and hammered them drifting. They don't call me the Bassassin for nothin'. Go ahead laff out load.

Thanks! I might take you up on that someday. Not sure my vessel is really seaworthy though, or at least something I should be taking out on Erie, unless it's within shouting distance of the boat launch though!

  11. Thanks for that, if nothing but directing me to tackle wearhouse where everything is nicely sorted lol. I rarely really fish the great lakes but at least I have a good idea what to look for now.

  12. I'm feeling the same way as the OP. Something I've wanted to try and never got around to. From a distance it's a technique that seems foolproof as long as you can get the depth right.

I've seen specific drop shot rods for sale too. What's special about them that wouldn't be true for a typical spincast rod?

    Any recommendations on bait?

  13. Mentioned to the guy when I called for a service appointment today that I was thinking about it. I'd be the first this year apparently. I waited until mid December to put them on too. I'll see if I'm in the mood to lug them into the car that morning. It only takes me about an hour to switch them out, and they're calling for snow this weekend so I'm thinking probably wait until April. But I am chronically lazy so if I can save myself that hour in a months time I might do it anyway lol.

  14. It's been illegal to catch or kill fish for some time now but you can purchase a waver from prosecution from your provincial gov. to do so, if the feds make a law against hunting and fishing the provinces would never go for it. The economic loss to governments would be enormous.

Not including the huge industries that have been built up around it. People may give millions to animal rights fanatics but other people give BILLIONS to the hunting and fishing industry.

  15. Forgot to mention my dog used to like to eat cat litter. If we left the door to the laundry room open every now and then she'd come over to us and her breath would absolutely reek and there would be grey maxx scoop caked into her gumline. I didn't dare ask which were the tastiest bits.

I found this odd because if I threw a ball in the yard and it went within 10 feet of a pile of poo she would refuse to pick it up. Apparently cat poo is OK though.

  16. I like Fergus, but I'd move north for an excuse not to go to the GTA. The ultra-competitive, worked to death attitude that permeates from some of these corporations into my small town living is not for me, but my wife would be very hard pressed to find a job outside of the GTA.

This thread got me to thinking, so I looked on some job search websites and found a position that seemed to be tailor made for me in Sudbury. My wife hates the GTA lifestyle so much she'd move with me even if she couldn't find a job.

  17. The guy's new and asked an honest question. There was a similar question about the Pine, why didn't Netminder get reamed?

I welcome some new blood around here.

Hey, come on now. I thought I was being fairly broad about my question. It's not like you could google Sturgeon Lake and not find thousands of posts and articles telling you that yes, in fact there are fish there. I was skeptical about the Pine River Provincial Fishing Area because it, in fact, looks nothing like a fishing area. And there is literally no information about it other than records of it possibly being stocked in the early 80's. It's a public park too, so I don't think it's a big secret spot that no one is supposed to know about.

FYI - I assumed this was a troll/joke thread too. Literally asking for tips on a specific spot?
