Heard on the news yesterday that Loblaws is expanding and hiring. thousands of job openings. Good news for those who lost jobs due to target closing down.

Thanks for the suggestions. My question regarding herbicides like killex and roundup and others, is there a certain amount of time after spraying that the kids should stay away from the yard. I have decided to try the weeder and grass seeds route first and see if that works. Now what type of seeds are easiest to use? I went to Wal-Mart and saw several brands. I will read the reviews, but looking for first hand experience. Thanks guys!

Good to know. I guess the weeder and Scotts seeds will be my best friends in the summer!
-
That works, but I might have to pull out half of the lawn since it is half grass and half weeds, unless there is a way to prevent them from growing in the first place through some method early in the season. Anyhow, does the Scotts grass seeds work without having to throw dirt on it once laid down? I know we all watch the commercials, but would like to get advice from real people who have tried it.

I am currently renting a house with a decent size backyard and a small front yard. The agreement is that I will take care of the lawn etc. I have been in the house for 2 summers now and noticed there is a lot of weeds (the sharp prickly ones), and its bad enough that the kids don't want to play in the backyard. I am looking for a cost effective method to tackle this issue. If you guys have any ideas, I would appreciate it. Hiring a company to come and do it is fine as well, but I would like to get your opinions first before making any phone calls and getting quotes. Or if there is a way to do this myself without breaking the bank, I am open for that as well. And how long and how many times a week should the lawn be watered? And what time is the best? By the way, the backyard is approximately 50 feet by 20 and the front is 20 by 6 feet at the most. Thanks!

Ontario Provincial Parks are the best! The best of them for kids and highly recommended is Pinery Provincial Park near Grand Bend which is less than 2.5 hours from your place. It has one of the best beaches, great sites, fishing in the ausable channel and you can take your boat out on to lake Huron. at the Ausable channel, you can rent kayas, canoes and paddle boats. The campground has a great park store. Other Parks I have gone to and are great parks that have fishing close by and I'm sure a boat launch: Point Farms Provincial Park ( 2.5 hours) This is one of my favorite parks. Good for 2 night stay. Awenda Provincial Park (1.5 hours) Nice Park with awesome sites and lots of activities. Rondeau Provincial Park 3.5 hours) Lot of activities but not so private sites. Sandbanks Provincial Park (3 hours) Whichever park you choose, check the reviews on tripadvisor.com and you can get a better idea on the campsites from this campsitepictures.com. If you need help choosing a park or want specifics on some good sites, you can send me a pm.

Thanks for the replies. I will probably stick with Pancake river and at the most wander out to Batchawana river. Any recommendations on one or two lures and bait that are good for brook trout? -

Thanks for the reply. Quick question, if I find a spot, is it ok to park the car on the shoulder and go down to the water since there will be no parking lot near these spots? I have seen cars parked on the shoulders all the time near creeks and rivers, but was always unsure if it is a violation. -
I have booked a campsite at pancake bay Provincial Park this July. I am really looking forward to this trip and hope to get some fishing done. Any suggestions on lakes in the area for fishing? I read that Batchwana River may hold some fish and possibly some trout. There are other lakes in the area, and I'm pretty sure there are fish, but would rather go where somewhere that is known to hold fish. I will mainly be fishing from shore. If there are other places worth visiting in the area, please do let me know. its a good 10 hour drive so would like to see as much as possible during our visit. Thanks

Went Ice fishing for the first time ever yesterday. We chose to go with Family Ice Cabins as per the recommendations and I am glad we got to meet Dave. He is one the nicest guys I have ever met. His children are wonderful and are very courteous and professional. Dave even gave us free minnows free of charge. Once we were ready to go, Dave took us to our 4 man cabin in his Suburban. Gotta love the comfy ride of the older GM Suvs! The cabin was well equipped with a 2 burner propane stove which is used as a stove and heater. The cabin was preheated and ready to go with the holes already cleared of ice. The only thing to remember for next time is to wear 2 pairs of socks since everything else was warm but from the knees down was cold but bearable. Fishing was slow, and we only managed one jumbo perch and 3 too small to keep. Dave told us that with the temperatures that cold, the perch were lazy. He also told us that a few days before one of his customers complained about the lack of fish, and upon checking in, he saw a massive fish swim by ( pike according to him) which scared all the perch away. We experienced the same yesterday and Sure enough we saw a massive fish swim by (looked to be 3 feet long) which looked more like a lake trout because of the fins. After that the perch were gone for a good 2 hours. After that the bite was very light and a very cautious bite, not enough to get to the hook to the mouth. We tried every lure and bait we had including the new northland buckshot rattling spoon I bought. Finally Dave came and fished with us for 20 minutes and they took his minnow making sure to not get hooked. These Perch were smart! We stayed till 5:30 when Dave came to pick us up. Once we were ready to leave, Dave out of his kindness and knowing we had a slow day brought out a Jumbo Perch he had in his freezer and gave it to us. All in all, we had a great time and can't wait to return! Thank you Dave!

Quick question, if I were to take a full charged car battery, obviously a spare one and just use that to light a bulb (9 watt bulb) for around 3-4 hours a night, how long would the battery last? this is one option that would help me choose a non hydro campsite during the hotter summer months when I can sacrifice the use of a fan.
-
We have camped without hydro, but prefer hydro because we stay in tents, on really hot days, we use a fan and on colder nights, we use the heater. Its mainly to keep the family happy since they love the outdoors, but are not the type to rough it out. And so long as I want to go camping in the future, I have to keep them comfortable
-
Thanks for the reply. Just checked brent and kiosk and non have hydro. Unfortunately it is a must with the family. Now if a bunch of my friends were to go, then that would be a great choice but all my friends have campophobia if that makes sense lol!

Looking to see if anyone has camped at Algonquin Provincial Parks and have any recommendations on any particular campground. Looking for campground with well spaced and large sites, as well as decent fishing. I was thinking either Canisbay lake, or Pog Lake but I am open to other recommendations. Also hydro is a must. Thanks! You guys are always very helpful!

quick question in regards to the cabins since its the first time going. How big are the holes? and how many? We are 4 people going so how does that work in any ice fishing cabin? I'm pretty sure we don't all put 4 lines into the same hole.

I have to agree that Ontario Parks campgrounds are probably the best. I have seen a few in Michigan, and they were pretty small.

We will be heading up to Dave's place in 2 weeks. First time ice fishing. We me luck!

I hope you don't mind me posting this here, but I am also looking to do some ice fishing on lake Simcoe. I was thinking of heading up to daves fishing huts in Jackson point. They have 2 packages. whitefish and lake trout, or perch and pike? Which is the best one to go with? I would like to go with the lake trout and and whitefish, but since its my first time going, I would rather go for the one that will likely catch something (ie not get skunked).
