  1. Anyone been to the show? Looking for a new shakey head rod, just wondering if its worth while going. Anyone see a deal on a loomis GLX or NRX or a St.Croix Elite

Its getting to be near impossible to find deals on high end equipment. With the current exchange rate all the dealers at the show were hiding behind that...

I did end up going to Fishing World this past weekend and I picked up an IMX flippin stick and a Calcutta D 200 at last years prices. They are one of the few dealers that maintain previous pricing on their old stock. Not sure what they have left but its worth a look.

Also, Sail has all there GL2's on clearance - approx 50% off. Not the quality youre looking for but the rods I saw were all marked down to $150.

  2. Can anybody tell me if there are MotorGuide and/or Lowrance booths at the Spring Fishing & Boat Show?

I have some questions about linking a Lowrance to my MotorGuide. I was hoping that they would be at the show. I don't see them listed in the directory. But they could be under a parent company.

I would appreciate any information that you can give me.

If you want accurate answers contact Monty at Angler's Outfitters and if he can't help you ask him for the Rep's contact info. I found that the guys manning the HB/MK booth at the Toronto boat show knew little to nothing about their products.... I remember asking explicitly about CHIRP and I was told that all they know is what they've looked up online... and they still didn't understand what the big deal is...

  3. Just a reminder folks about Muskie Sunday fast approaching on February 14th. I know it's Valentines Day, but there is nothing wrong with giving the box of chocolates or flowers a day early and gaining points....... :whistling:

Seminars start at 8:00 am and this admission includes entry into the rest of the show. Coffee will be provided.

A partial list from the silent auction table of over 25 items. All auction items are cash only. We are not set up for debit or credit card.

Can you get your ticket in advance or is it at the door only?

  4. The most serious Walleye tourney here on the east end of Erie is the 444 Tournament, check it out. 4 fish, 4 fisherman 4 tournaments in total, here plus in the US. Many Pro's enter from here and US. Last year a crew of locals won the whole shebang here out of Pt. Colbourne, nice to see the pro's get schooled. Can enter 1 or all of them. The first of the series is out of Port Colbourne. A serious very well run series. The newest out here is The Maitland Mayhem, this will be the 3rd year, not as big as 444 but a decent weekend of less serious fun. It is run out of Fishmaster's Marina who is a member and contributor here. My 19 foot boat is too small to deal with rougher weather here and if we can't go out in these 2 we lose the entry $$ which isn't derby money change. The local derby we do attend is the Fisherville Firefighters Perch and Walleye Derby. If you are interested PM me in June or July, it is usually held on the Aug 1st long weekend. Fun for all with the perch prize the boat size isn't as critical and the kids can play too. Let me know.

Thanks, this is great info. Its on my list :)

  5. I got schooled a few years back when I called a Fishing tournament a derby. Huge difference, especially to the organizers and players. Derbys are for red and white bobbers and kiddies, tourneys are for Pro's and guys that slap stickers on their boats and the sew patches to their "fishing shirts" that think they are pro's. Just ask them.

I do understand the difference yet my question remains the same. For example, I usually fish the Kiwanis Walleye "DERBY" in may..lol

Yea its cheap, you can use live bait.. but decent prizes and a great warmup for the season.

  6. Parabolic typically means medium or moderate action.

Parabolic rods really excel in crankbait/treble hook applications because they load up a little slower and help you keep the fish hooked with the small hooks you find on a treble. Not an ideal solution for larger single hooks (IE jigs!) where a fast or extra fast rod will help detect a lite bite and have the backbone to send the hook home.

Saying that you can catch fish on any rod with any technique but to optimize your landing success rate its good to have the right equipment.

Seanik, if you already have a parabolic rod and a MedLite triumph (most likely fast action) then start looking towards something more to the Medium or Medium Heavy power. I would recommend a fast action rod unless you're going to use it exclusively for crank baits and trolling.

Check out the Fenwick HMG line. Its been completely updated and they are great value, come in all kinds of actions and powers, and are 2 piece.

  7. Lol.....thats what I was thinking too!

That is a much better rig for bouncing harnesses. Good score!

    S.

True! I use an Accurist for Bottom Bouncin'.. The flippin switch is great for when you're moving deeper, just thumb it and you're good to go...

  8. Has anyone dealt with Wholesale SPorts out of western canada? They have a pretty decent sale on now.

One thing that caught my eye is the Abu MGX for $288. Its at Sail right now for $379 less 15% plus tax. I believe there may be not sale tax applied when buying from wholesale as they don't have a presence in the democratic republic of Ontario...

  9. Thanks for all your feedback. I do plan to eventually get some Orcas; but I have an opportunity to pick up some Rocket Launchers with adapters that can be mounted to a track. Based on the feed back, they may be more useful to store the rods that are not in use when I am trolling.

I am also looking at Bert's or Cannon dual axis rod holders. I hope that nobody has had problems with them. I know that the Berts seem to be a favourite among Salmon fisherman. The Cannons are similar.

Check out Cisco as well. IMHO, they are best.

  10. I use Orcas for all my rod holder/trolling needs. Everything from trolling the flats for small mouth, walleyes with a number 1 dipsy, and trolling huge cranks at 5mph for muskie.

The only thing about the Orcas is the way they release. You have to pull up on the front/outboard side to get them to open, its not a problem but its not intuitive. I've had to school guests several times as they naturally want to pull up either evenly (front to back) or at the rear.

I also prefer the push-button mounts they come with, rather than the twist and turn you get with the power locks.

I got mine at Sail on sale..lol

  11. I use it a lot and have never had a problem other than the fact that its expensive. If you use it more than a few times a year, get a transponder.

And for those who note that it shouldn't be private I would like to know why? The Gov't had their chance and they blew it. Lets face it, it can't be that hard to manage a highway.. they manage OPG for gawds sake... or is it mis-manage....lol

Just imagine that if the Gov't did still own it, they'd try and find a way to add a HOT lane to it... <_<
