  1. I'm in the market for some new deep cycles and trying to locate them at a Costco. My old Kirkland served me well. According to the staff I spoke with, they are "pending deletion", which they said means they will be discounted. No stores seem to have any on the floor that I've called, although a few are showing them in stock in the system which I've been told is an inventory error.

I know a lot of you guys use these batteries... Has anyone bought a costco deep cycle recently and/or seen them at any GTA locations?

Great battery for the price, hope they don't actually discontinue them.

Yes, costco considers them seasonal items. I have a grp 24 Kirkland DC for my house battery and it works great. I also have 2 grp 29 DC batteries from Walmart that are awesome. I use then on a 24 volt terrova and they will last for days if you're careful. Walmart has 2 options, the everstart and the everstart Maxx. The Maxx is about $20 more but much better reserve capacity and better warranty.

  2. my thoughts are that the smallie population has benefited from the zebra mussel and goby situation. They are visual feeders and the cleaner water in the great lakes and Simcoe benefit them. Plus add a (new) food-source that they love and there you have it.

Regarding largemouth, we are at their most northern range. If you look at their habitat down south there really isn't that much of it here. Add in the lower water temps and shorter season and you have a pretty good recipe for the OPs concerns.

For example, long point lake erie has substantial largemouth habitat but they are seldom targeted as they are more difficult to catch and there's no size bonus over the smallie. The season opener derby this year showed that the winning largemouth was about the same size as the winning smallie.

  3. I don't have much experience fishing LM bass so I'm Heading to Rice next week to specifically target Largies. Not looking for your special "honey holes" just info on patterns/colours that work on this lake and the Ottonobee river.

I really enjoy this type of fishing so I would like to hone my skills. I'll be rigged to Punch, Flip, Pitch, Frog, etc.

PM me if you don't want the world to know...lol

    TIA!

    Patrick.

  4. Tablets typically come in 2 flavours, with and without a sim card slot. If you want full independent functionality you'll need a way to access data.. for example your wifi at home provides this but when you're away from home you need another way. Most tether it to their smartphone because your smartphone provides data much the same as your wifi at home does. The issue with this setup is that the smartphone data costs more than wifi. If your tablet comes with a simm card slot you can get a data plan just for your tablet, again a costly solution.

You have 2, possibly 3 options:

    1. The cheapest is to use it at home and connect to wifi hotspots such as those provided in cafes, etc. Downfall is that limits where you can use it.

    2. Use your smartphone as a wifi hot spot to provide a connection to your tablet. You may want to get an better data plan for your phone.

    3. If the tablet has a simm slot (most do not!) then get a dedicated data plan for the tablet. Most convenient and the most $$. This option is much like having 2 cell/smart phones and plans.

PM me if you have any specific questions, I'll be glad to help :)

  5. There are only a few different battery manufacturers, they just re-brand them. I've used deep cylces from Costco, Walmart, and C-Tire and if you take care of them, they are all pretty good.

AGMs are nice because they are sealed and you don't need to check electrolyte levels. AGMs also come in 2 versions, Standard and Pure Lead. The pure lead versions supposed to last 2x longer than standard AGMs. Standard AGMs supposed to last 2x as long as flooded. According to the marketing material..

For my TM, I'm using 2 grp 29 EverStart Maxx (Walmart's top of the line flooded marine) and they really last and have gobs of power. I can't recall exactly but I think they were under $150 each.

  6. I wouldn't. Better to be safe than sorry.

I have a couple days off work....strongly considering swapping out the tires on both vehicles in the next day or two. Anyone else thinking of making the change early or am I alone in considering doing this? The 2 week forecast was all above zero (and many days above 7)

  7. I've only owned HB but one thing I've noticed is that the hard core (tournement) guys go more for Lowrance.

With that being said, the new HB Helix is an awesome unit. They did a great job upgrading the old core units.. faster, better graphics, and new features. Check them out carefully tho, the list of features changes drastically once you get in to the Helix 9. Also, some come with compact transducers, some with the HD. You can always upgrade but something to be aware of.

PM if you have any "specific" questions and I'll do my best to help.

  8. Yes, mine is one of the last to go in and one of the first to go out... I'm sure if you pressured them enough and offered to lend them a hand, they might move things around so you can get out.. Maybe...

  9. Thanks KraTTor, it looks like I would be looking at the 200 series for Bass, Pike and Walleye. I Have tossed those monster Musky baits with good Shimano baitcastersand rods on a charter with Dany Columby (he will put you on the fish) on the West Arm. Man it's like throwing bricks after a half an hour and that's with great reels. It was the first time in many years using a level wind and zero back lash, I was proud. I know the good reels were a big factor, for sure. I can't imagine throwing bricks with crap reels so I see now see how it's worth the $$ if you are going to do that day after day. I never could understand the reason for the big bucks for them, I do now. I'm going to fish more for Smallies here on Erie this year again. I pretty well long lined for Walleye for the past 4 years and it's time to get back to Bass so I goota get me a 200.

    Thanks for the help Sir.

Anytime Bud! I do a lot of smallie fishing on Eire, mostly long point and Mitchell's bay LSC. The 200 would really rock as a Largemouth reel for pulling big toads out of heavy cover, they won't stand a chance!

  10. Were you reading my mind? I'm looking for a baitcaster, I hope you get some good feedback. What is the advantage you see in a round reel KraTTor?

    From Shimano:

Most likely one of the most liked and used round profile baitcasters ever sold in Europe incorporating the latest Shimano technology. Its one piece cold forged frame now houses an X-Ship engine which will let this reel operate even smoother than before with increased cranking power capabilities. Simply the strongest and most reliable baitcasting reel with a reputation going back over 20 years X-Ship for higher rigidity and enormous cranking power Shimano's highly acclaimed Variable Brake System giving the reel a consistent spool speed for optimised distance casting Dartanium Drag providing a wider range of drag settings and Shimano's smoothest drag performance ever giving anglers extra confidence needed while fighting aggressive fish

The Calcuttas are solid, they have tremendous cranking power, and they cast a mile.

Many people, including Jim Saric love the 400d for throwing big baits. The reason I purchased a 200d is because I liked the 400 so much I wanted a smaller version for bass and pike. The 200 will suit a a heavy or X heavy rods used for Swimbaits, Big Swimjigs, frogs/toads, big deep crankbaits, and large spinnerbaits.

One of the best features of this reel is that when retrieving big resistive baits like big spinnerbaits and deep cranks, its geared in a way that makes using these baits a breeze (no fatigue). They also cast a mile and will last a very long time.
