Wait, weren't you going on about how great the musky fishing is on Pigeon!?!  🤔 😁

Don’t worry, things have not changed in the last three years, I’ve still caught multiple musky bass fishing on pigeon over my time off

  2. siwash, forget musky...i havent fished musky in over 3 years (been too busy tournament fishing) I will tell you though, i have used my knipex handhelds 3 times 😬 to get hooks out of me and someone else. As far as I am concerned, I dont run a boat without them in it. Its almost as neccesary as any safety equipment as far as I am concerned.

You fish enough, its not a matter of if, but when you will get poked.

So are we still in "summer mode" for Muskie? It's been cool at night and declining light to add. I wonder if there is a transition about to happen. If so, do they go deeper? Shallower? Depends on the day ? I'd imagine that they may be going into heavier feed mode?

Everything is starting to chew a lot more aggressively. Probably still find musky a bit deeper at the moment, but I heard the water was 66 in the kawarthas after that cold rain Friday. So I think the ski’s could be anywhere at the moment.

no need to worry about massive changes until the lakes turn over in late September

  4. Yup There’s a launch that’s free in fees landing.

lots of skis in the south end, no need to travel all of the way up north. Find the deepest water down there.

as a rule, do not start musky fishing until you have the basic musky tools shopping list.

    1. a musky net, a cradle will do if you have multiple people, but a net is needed if solo

    2. jaw spreaders

    3. bolt cutters, when you hook a musky deep, it’s often easier to simply cut your hooks and perform surgery to remove the hooks that way.

    4. A cut proof glove. Big musky, have big mouths that will sometime require you to shove a hand right in to get a hook out.

    5. Big long nose pliers.

and things to remember, musky die faster out of water than any other fresh water fish, so when handling them, use your net to your advantage. Keep the fish in the water and treat the net like an aquarium. It allows you to unhook the musky, get your camera etc ready etc etc all while the fish is able to breath. This also allows you to contain the fish to revive it at the time of release. A tired musky will often need to be tailed for minutes in order to swim down again.

finally don’t fish musky on bass gear unless it’s an XH flipping rod. You don’t want to play these fish, playing them essentially guarantees that they end up dead.

practice your gill plate grab. It’s the only way to properly handle the fish, while doing so support their belly. Don’t hang a big fish entirely by it’s gill plate. If you need help with this, YouTube is your friend

I fished it once, years ago.. recall that the big island on the north side of the lake is supposed to hold musky... we only caught smallies and panfish but it was pretty decent as I recall.   I think the we caught fish in the narrow stretch between the big island and the east shoreline.

Is there a public launch in Bobcaygeon?

    thanks!

not sure, lots of marinas to launch at...only free launch i know of is at the causeway on chemong. ive caught skis on the west side of the gannon narrows and east side east of kishgo  south end near emily and up in the north end near nogies creek.

The lake once again, I cannot stress enough is loaded with musky. Go poke around and you will find them, its the best place to hone your blade as far as I am concerned. Theres plenty of 40+ fish to wet your chops and learn the ropes.

  6. im going to have to give that a try, seran wrap i guess could work. Now i need to find somewhere that sells them.

Seems like theres a trailer shop in brampton that services a lot of the pro's trailers. Going to give that a stab. Might even be able to tow right there and have them pick one out for me.

  7. Hey Guys,

Tried to service the surge brakes on my trailer and realized I have a leaking banjo bolt on my right caliper. Tried looking online and could not find anything here in canada to able to source one, plus some new copper washers. Anyone here know a good place that would have a selection of them? Its really hard to take a banjo bolt in and say "i need a new one of these, in this size and thread pattern" because then brake fluid pours out all over my garage. What do you guys think I should do?

    Im all ears.

  8. id target smallmouth and flip largemouth if it has them? (most lakes in the area do)

Parry sound and most shield lakes are easy to solve if you are just out to catch some fish. Any mid lake shoal will hold smallmouth, and any pads you find will always hold largemouth.

Honestly, you may surprise yourself at the size of largemouth you manage to poke.

    Hey man,

I bought a boat a couple of weeks ago and I'm having trouble with the 2 helix 8 fishfinders. I'm convinced it's a wiring issue and I think I know exactly what needs to be done, I just don't want to mess it up doing it myself. Could you reach out to me to discuss? Maybe I can use your services.

    Cheers,

    Dave

    Sent you a PM Dave

  10. dont waste the money if you arent already using your electronics extensively to fish. If you are the type of fisherman that 1. casts to fish and 2. uses your electronics a lot already...its a game changer.

I fished yesterday and as stupid as it was, I was annoyed by the lack of livescope in my buddies boat. Not for finding fish, but to understand where the deep weed edges lied fishing in 14fow. I could see the weeds on the 2d but was struggling to stay in the zone while keeping the boat off of the good stuff.

  11. i worked with my broker to make sure that my electronics set up was the primary part of the value of my boat. Because of its age the blue book value of a 16 year old is essentially nothing. But the screens, panoptix and trolling motor would all cost a very pretty penny to replace no matter what.

  12. Peterborough pro tackle has an unbelievable online store. The problem is that you lose the experience of browsing all of their incredibly rare imported tackle from Japan. They had stuff I’d never even dream of looking up. I could spend hours In there.

where do you buy your tackle? I'm looking for better sources.  Online?

Peterborough Pro Tackle. Their online store is really good too.

RE: The hookup tackle...apparently they are number one in the world and are a bass boat central sponsor. I just never shop with them because its american. They truly have almost everything you can image. I fairly often get extremely annoyed at how hard it can sometimes be to get stuff here in canada. I recently was simply trying to find 8 strand braid in colours other than moss green and it was nearly impossible. Drives me insane.

The big box retailers have become so out of touch with current enthusiast trends...that it's to the point that the Crappy Tire in the west end of Kingston has a better selection of (in store) baits than BPS.

Whoever the purchasing manager is at this particular CT store, they really know their stuff. This store is no regular CT...3 full aisles of soft plastics alone...including brands like MegaBass, Keiteck and JackAll...also LuckyCraft, Duo and EverGreen hard baits...even an aquarium with game fish in the middle of the store.

This is one location that ain't that crappy..

Like to me its apparent, CT and BP, they cater to the guy that wants to go fishing a couple of times while hes at the cottage. However I truly believe that its a failing business structure and it wont be long before they go out of business.

If you go to BP, its noticeable, the place is far too empty for such a gigantic floor space and the quality of set up/inventory has greatly suffered. There is only so many lead weights and bobbers and $80 fishing combos you can sell to people IMO. Literally every single person thats been to a lake has an old tackle box loaded with junk fishing gear. You might sell the crap one time to somebody but theres no need for them to ever replenish their supply. Meanwhile the guys that are actually getting at it every week need high quality tackle and are constantly spending money on high ticket merchandise, the kind of stuff that would actually keep a store open.

Heck whats the profit margin on the $140 swimbait I just bought from Peterborough Pro Tackle? Surely thats a more profitable venture than selling BPS branded junk crank baits to the guy going to the cottage for the long weekend?

Either way, the only complaint that I have is that for whatever reason, Gagnon's, Peterborough Pro Tackle and Pro J are all bloody east of the GTA. Like am I crazy or is there a massive opportunity for someone to open something West/North of the city? Or do we simply not like bassin enough once you are too far from the kawarthas.

Would rather shop from a local independently owned retailer than the walmart of fishing anyways.

Finally, No hate to Jasper at PRO J or the boys at Gagnons, but after my most recent visit to PPT...man, they might be running one of the best tackle shops in north America at the moment. Ive had the pleasure of visiting a few of the big shops down in the states, and they arent even on PPT's level. Their selection and brands they are carrying now...geeez mind blown.
