I'm just two fishing poles shy of being hosted on the tv show hoarders. -  LOL.

I have a rule when people describe apparent “fishermen” to me. To check how serious they actually are I ask one simple question, how many fishing rods do you own. If they know they typically aren’t that serious.

  2. Shag, I’d save yourself a few extra Pennies and get the 7 over the 5. The difference in screen size between the 5 and 7 is about as noticeable as the difference between a 7 and a 12.

i found the 5 very difficult the read the GPS off of especially since screens are now always in landscape format.

i wish I could sell you my helix 7 g2 chirp gps at a stupid deal but I just realized today that for some reason I can no longer get the transducer to connect to it.

if you simply want water temp, gps, and depth you cannot go wrong with a helix 7 chirp gps G2. It’s the lowest price with some of the best imaging on the market. For a guy that’s also looking for a simple unit to use it’s right up there with the best for that application. An added bonus they are extremely simple to convert to and ice fishing flasher if you buy a xi 9 ice transducer!

ill add, if you are looking for any help with wiring/getting it set up and dialed, as per my other thread let me know id love to help!

  3. there you go, and its possible in sinkers case there was something defective going on. There's a few stories from the bass boat central forums as well of guys having them not inflate. The problem once again is that these same guys then wear the vest while driving but then take it off to fish.

Unless you are going to fish with the vest on, wear the auto. The odds of your auto failing and you dying are nowhere near as high as you simply falling in and dying while wearing nothing as your boat drifts away from you in the wind and you drown because you are not able to swim 500 meters while wearing a full set of clothing.

Want to know the number one consistent thing in basically 99.9% of on water fatalities? Alchohol and lack of life vests.

  4. To me, it’s totally dependant on a reels usage. My smallmouth stuff holds up a hell of a lot more than my dirty flipping largie stuff.

i try to prioritize the reels that I use most, but also refrain from totally breaking down new reels and resort to simple oil, regrease of the spool shaft and worm gear and a cleaning of the exterior. Stuff that’s been used heavy for a few years I break right down.

i find certain reels especially your classic JDM greenie curados and chronarchs and stradics etc, those reels seemingly can be brought back to life with a good cleaning that’s why I love buying them for a good deal. Break em down clean and oil and they fish like brand new almost every time.

breaking down reels becomes a hobby for me like fly tying, it passes long cold winter days that are too miserable for me to be out in the garage tinkering on the boat.

i will say, high end well built reels a heck a lot of the time just need a good cleaning and at worst a set of new bearings. The components in them are usually so robust that aside from a bit of cosmetic boat rash those reels are as good as new once serviced.

Yeah, I talked to many who waited in line for 1-1 1/2 hours in order to get in! I guess they should look for a larger venue next year! I was insanely busy in there all day long, never had a chance to wander around even which probably was good for my pocket book! LOL The North GTA Tackle Swap on Sat. April 2 in Newmarket will have quality vendors and shouldn't be as crazy busy! Hope to see some members out there! Only a TOONIE or a donation of a non-perishable food item for entrance fee!

If I’m not fishing Im going to try and make it to this even just to meet some people

  6. Hey guys,

just throwing this out there as spring arrives, I got into car stereo wiring in highschool and as my fishing passion took off I’ve now completely overhauled 3 boat’s marine electronics wiring systems including trolling motors, Humminbird and Garmin systems, networking and forward facing sonar amongst other projects helping friends with wiring their boats etc and have spent countless hours studying the perfect way to wire electronics for maximum output and clarity.

im a boat electronics junky and I’m beginning to realize that this skill set is somewhat specialized, especially these days in as the car stereo industry has all but vanished.

I’ve had some members inquire about wiring their own electronics and I’ve noticed that any companies working in this space making marine wiring harnesses such as sea clear power to me are 1. Extremely overpriced and 2 American based making it not the most accessible for Canadians.

In simple terms, im offering a 100% plug and play wiring system customized for your boat that will allow your electronics to work perfectly once the harness is strung through your boat to wherever you plan on having your screens.

So I’m throwing this out there to anyone listening, I could use a little extra cash at the moment to pay an expensive vet bill! I’ve been toying with the idea of making these wiring systems, even considering doing a little wiring as a side gig if there was any interest. So if anyone out there is interested or has considered upgrading their electronics but are intimidated by the idea of rewiring their boat please comment here or reach out, I’d love to have a chat about your application. Shoot me a message or comment here!

*Edit - I never thought of this until now either, I’ve done a bit of car detailing on the side and can definitely offer that for boats as well! I can even high speed polish and re-surface fibreglass boats.

from exterior cleaning, to interior, carpet cleaning and fibre glass treatments, shoot me a message, I’d love to talk about what you’d like your boat to look like!

if you saw my 98 skeeter, you’d know what I’m talking about!

im located in Georgetown and carling and can travel if needed.

Was researching the purchase of self-inflating life jackets and apparently they aren't recommended for people who either can't or are weak swimmers. Does anyone know why this is?

My assumption is that they do have a failure rate while your standard foam life preserver does not.

I’ve heard a few stories of them not deploying, however let me make it very very clear after going through this entire dilemma myself. I stopped wearing the auto while my boat was under power, and quickly realized how stupid I was being because it meant I was wearing nothing while I was fishing a lot. Just dumb logic being scared of my auto not inflating while under power but wearing nothing while fishing instead of just wearing the auto 100% of the time.

i find my auto bugs me a bit when it’s hot so I don’t typically wear it when the water is warm I go back to wearing a vest while driving but in the fall and spring when the water is cold Or I’m fishing big water I wear the auto 100% of the time and basically don’t notice it

  8. funny bunk, ling are sought after here, but in manitoba they were consider to be a nuisance so much so that they held a burbot derby every year on athapap to clean out the burbot. Many people attribute to the improved fishing to this derby but I also think it has a lot to do with manitoba moving from a 6 walleye per person limit down to 4? and barbless.

  9. I went with them, and liked them so much that I’m going to be going with them again this year in my new to me rig.

the AGM extreme was absolutely nuts for cranking power, it literally made that old yamaha sound like a machine gun was firing it turned over so fast and powerful, it was like a totally different boat.

id also love to go lithium but it also means changing your charging set up. That’s my only reason for not making the change over.

i ran the standard nautilus group 31’s for my trolling motor and didn’t ever even come close to draining them. I did a 13 hour day last year pre fishing a tournament in heavy wind and they still had half their juice left at the end of the day.

I’ve always been more concerned with my electronics. That day I ran two Garmin 95s, a helix 7 and livescope for 13 hours straight and didn’t kill a nautilus group 27 extreme never mind the 31!

I live here and would be happy to pick it up for you, but I basically never drive to Mordor aka GTA.  So I could store it here until you pick it up some time...

    Doug

Doug and cliff both extremely generous offers. Very much appreciated.

Doug let me sort out some details, I can easily plan a day of fishing on the Larry this spring to make miles and gas worthwhile.

    i will be in touch

  11. Hey guys,

It's a shame so many have sold out. But you cant' blame them when they have a chance to make some big $$$. Running that business is probably not as lucrative as we would think.

For some giggles look at the prices for these rentals. Whoever is renting them has some serious coin....What's $5,000- $15,000 a week. YIKES

Boutique Cottage Rentals & Waterfront Cottages - Jayne's Cottages (jaynescottages.com)

Wealthy Americans, remember they don’t pay much in taxes. If I had 25% more income and a 25 cent on the dollar exchange rate I’d be able to afford it too
