  1. Here’s what they looked like as I took them out…As you can see I heat shrunk over the bolts attaching the ring terminals. I then took it apart and re-installing was as simple as putting a ring terminal on the power end of my wires, heat shrinking that, bolting the two terminals together and heat shrinking over that connection.

     

    if you need some ring terminals I have a frigging ton of high end ones that a board member provided me last year. I’ve also got some terminal block connectors that I can give you. I can’t remember where you live but let me know if you are interested. I have no problem paying it forward.

  2. One more add on incase anyone ever searches this thread for information. If your trailer manufacturing date is older than 15 years old you are exempt from the RIV program and "canadian tire inspection"

    They harp on the month of manufacture as well, my trailer had all of this info stamped on it so I was sure to take a photo of the manufacturer plate and this saved me a pile of hassle. Hull is registered with transport canada, Trailer is registered with the province, taxes are paid, insurance is ordered. Time to get rigged for some fishing this weekend!

    My favourite part was when I was literally about to leave Sunday and almost got myself trapped in the United States when I realized that my particular negative covid test was valid for entry into the United States but not for re-entry into canada.

    got re-covid tested and tried yesterday. 
     

    all I can say is, being organized, polite, respectful and outright honest about everything is a good policy when dealing with customs and border security. 
     

    keys for me were, bill of sale already signed by the owner, certified cheque in the name of the owner and the title search done. 
     

    on the way back, they wanted the bill of sale, the title search and the proof of manufacturing date for the trailer. My particular trailer being just barely over 15 years old allowed for exemption from the RIV program. At least from what I can tell thus far. We shall see what service Ontario says when I go there today.

    also need to “re-plate” my boat as it has NY numbers on it and that won’t fly with the feds.

    small bonus for the trip, I filled up the truck with diesel and the 130 litre boat tank with $3.80 per gallon ethanol free premium 

    funny of course I got randomly selected to take yet another covid test when I got back to canada. So I paid my taxes and headed to the testing facility. Boat is home now, now to get some rigging done!

    Ended up going and getting it myself. They let me in with all of the appropriate paper work, certified cheque, double vax receipt, negative covid test etc.

    yes, the sturgeon are there, 20+ years ago I saw natives pull a net, on that trip too I was WOT heading west towards frenchmans ( the deep section where it's safe to run without worries, you probably know where I'm talking about), I was staring blindly towards the horizon and at 500yds I saw a 200lbs orca breach and crash back into the water

    I saw this happen while walleye fishing in pointe au baril a decade ago. I was looking into the sunset a 7-8 foot whale jumped out of the water and splashed down.

    Not yet, I’m trying wednesday. Have to get re-tested for covid and spend even more money. If they don’t let me in I’ll have to wait until the 8th and get tested yet again! Hooray for me.

     

    ill let you know if I get the boat Wednesday. If I do I’ll be spending Thursday evening installing my trolling motor so I have a boat for the weekend

  7. 6 guage anchor marine tinned copper. Some longer lengths require 4 but shouldn’t be necessary with your application. I personally bolt my crimped terminal ends together with stainless bolts and a locking nut to prevent vibration loosening it.  I have then used heat shrink over the connection. I then placed mesh loom over that.

    you can decide if you want to still have a plug for your TM. If you are like me, the trolling motor never comes off of my boat. Some people like the convenience of being able to remove their trolling motor for whatever reason, storage, security etc.

     

    ill get you a photo of my set up hopefully in a couple of days. I’ll be installing my whole set up on my new boat.

    Ya that’s 8, maybe even 10…too thin. Are you running a 24 volt system? I’m assuming you are getting too much resistance building up somewhere due to corrosion or just a bad terminal connection. I’d personally rewire, it’s a cheap effective solution if your run is short as described.

    You might be a little light on your wire guage there. Especially if you are running an 80lb thrust motor. You want to run 6 guage tinned copper at minimum

    Funny, I actually trust myself with wiring more than I do a technician, simply due to the fact that DC wiring is a bit of an “art form” when you really take your time and spend the money to ensure everything is marine grade, crimped, soldered, shrink wrapped, loomed, and waterproofed it’s a heck of a lot of detail, detail that I wouldn’t trust a hired gun with simply due to time constraints. I spent all winter last year doing a lot of wiring in my skeeter, and to do it perfectly is time consuming as all hell.

So a quick story about personal experience, this happened to me, what was happening was that my wires were fraying at the plug in connection due to vibration creating a big resistance which actually was lighting my power cable on fire. Yes…i had a small fire in my boat even with the cable fused.
     

    if I were you I’d be immediately checking every connection, or even possibly totally redoing them to ensure you have a nice clean connection to each terminal point.

    by the way if you are using a minkotta receptacle and plug, they are literally totally garbage.an electrician friend recommended installing a commercial high voltage plug, I did and never looked back. 

  12. Dave the thing I’m most shocked about is that after following this thread along is that there is actually an open water season 😂

     

    yet here we are talking about ice up

    out of all of the cottage jobs, dock work is my most hated bar none. It always needs to be done when it’s cold as hell. There’s not a heck of a lot of august dock work.

    I have the Striker Ice suit and it’s very warm and comfortable. Never tested it’s floating ability though. I’ve seen videos of it floating well. 

    Salus makes a coast guard approved suit as well. Nautilus/helly hanson seems to be out of the game.

    I went through in my nautilus and it floated better than a life jacket, I was almost hovering above the water.

    Im a huge fan of the Salus 1 piece, some people might find it a bit heavy/uncomfortable, but there is nothing in the world as warm, wearing the thing feels like you are wearing body armour against the elements on the ice. I fish days when its 25 below in the thing and im toasty.

    Seems there’s been a few people I have chatted to that have recently brought boats over. If you have all of your paperwork set and go directly to customs and declare there hasn’t been an issue.

    my only concern at this point is the transfer of title on the trailer coming from New York which is a title state. 
     

    sometimes I wonder if all of this crap is bogus…when I bought my last boat (within canada) the lady at mto seemed confused by the fact that I was registering a boat trailer separate from the boat. I paid the registration fee got my plates and left with all of my documentation and I never looked back. I’m to this day not convinced I jumped through all of the hoops I was supposed to but I’ve got the transport canada registration and all of the applicable registration documents and insurance so even if I am wrong, I don’t think anyone could tell me that I am?
