  1. I would be using it to mark spots and general depth information. Would probably use it more ice fishing, but some regular fishing too. The Garmin 62s is on sale at REI (US) for $279 right now. Seems like a good deal, so maybe I will get that one. Thanks all for the help.
  2. So, since the Delorme takes Navionics is that the way to go for Rice Lake and Lake St Clair maps? The Garmin lake maps would not be as good?
  3. Looking for feedback on Delorme PN-60 or Garmin 62s hand held gps. Would be used on Rice Lake and also Lake St Clair. I am curious as to which one has the better set of lake maps, etc.. I do not own a boat, so don't own another GPS. Thanks for the feedback.
  4. I have that same Stella and have it paired with a Loomis GLX medium. Great combo!
  5. You may not have the time to ship it, but the below person is authorized by Nils to sharpen their blades. I just had my Nils blades sharpened over Christmas, when the same thing happened and he shipped it back very fast and they are as good as new. I also bought a spare blade, in case my blade gets dull again, so I can rotate them. I know he ships to Canada too. Frank DeLuca 5382 Jentoft Rd, Saginaw, MN 55779 [email protected]
  6. Hi Ron - ok, I see your point and agree ice fishing is a really fun family activity. I am more worried about the perch population, so as long as you/others/mnr think that it will not get hurt the perch population by ice fishing, then I would agree that ice fishing would be fun.
  7. I disagree with her point of raising the limits on panfish - keep them where they are at or even lower the bluegill limit. But, I totally agree with her on ice fishing. Totally contradictory, but have made this point before and know most people don't agree with it.
  8. You find it mildly offensive that I want to help protect the fishery for future generations??? And by the way our trips are more than annual and I feel as much as a resident as anyone, since we have gone to Rice Lake multiple times a year over the past 42 years and know Rice Lake as well as anyone on this forum. I am done with this thread - no one is going to win and we all have our own views.
  9. Yes, I do. I love ice fishing, but my point is why are we are setting limits on panfish - this means the population on Rice Lake is hurting. Again, I am for the limits, but then we open up ice fishing, which will allow more fish to be taken out of the lake. If Rice Lake is under so much pressure, then why open up ice fishing, until we monitor what effect the limits have on the fish population. Then maybe open up the lake for ice fishing. What is the rush? Not sure, why is this point so hard to understand? I was ice fishing on the Canadian side of Lake St Clair a couple weeks ago and talking to a local resident that was saying how he already has 20 pounds of perch in the freezer and was back out for more. Another one I talked to got his limit in the morning and then came back out in the afternoon and got his limit again. So, why have limits if they are going to be exploited? Does "possession" mean that you can only keep 50 perch at one time in your freezer, because if so it is being broken a lot and if it does not mean then that it should and somehow being enforced, just like it is if any American would bring fish back home. This thread has made me so angry now and I am losing the respect of a lot of anglers, who have posted here and that I have respected in the past. I love going to Rice Lake not just for the fishing, but because I love Canada and Canadians and love the beautiful scenery that it offers.
  10. Of course I get that point, but don't you get that it is obvious how much easier it is to catch those bigger perch ice fishing and why it is so contradictory setting limits (which I am for), but then allowing ice fishing????? I give up - everyone is so focused on the limit of bluegills, but yet everyone does not focus on the extra fish people are taking out of the lake ice fishing. This is obviously a one sided thread. By the way, I don't agree that cottage owners are so bad, it sounds like just a couple bad apples. I know for a fact the the cottage owner we stay it is all for conservation and also is against ice fishing. Not against ice fishing, because it hurts his business, but because it may hurt the panfish fishery that we are trying so hard to protect. It sounds like a few are speaking for the RLTA (ones that probably should not be) and a few are speaking for all anglers too.
  11. I don't get the perch pale point? So, all those perch were harvested from Rice Lake Ice Fishing? If so, that only proves the point that Ice Fishing should not be allowed on Rice Lake. Even if they were not caught their, anyone that is for these limits on panfish, should be opposed to ice fishing on Rice Lake. I find it utterly amazing that people are not pointing this out. Ice fisherman (I love ice fishing, but not on Rice) take more panfish, more easily than summer fisherman. So, this will put more pressure on the Rice Lake panfish population. So, if we are all pure sportsman that practice conservation and want to preserve and make the Rice Lake fishery better for all, then we should keep the limit restrictions, but eliminate ice fishing. Pure, common sense.
  12. I am from the States and could care less about the bluegill limit. I still wonder if people do keep bluegill and take them to the States, how they know that 30 are over 7 inches compared to the other smaller ones that people would bring back. I still disagree opening ice fishing on Rice Lake. The perch fishery has to come back a lot more than it is now, before ice fishing should even be allowed. I know that I am in the minority on this topic though.
  13. That is impressive and looks like a lot of fun! Your plate of food is making me hungry!!!!!!!!!!!
  14. This whole topic is getting hilarious. I wonder how many resident anglers go out and limit out on walleye, perch, etc..., go in and fillet them and go out for more. I know for a fact that this goes on too. The people we met at Mitchells Bay at Lake St Clair last week were actually bragging about when we went ice fishing their, ie "When we get our limit on perch, we go in and fillet them and then go back out to get more" People from both sides of the border practice some very poor fishing management techniques. I live close to Lake Erie and nothing annoys me more when I hear of some our local anglers going out and limiting out on walleyes and perch only to give them away to other people, because they already have plenty in there freezer. Our fisheries will never last with that type of behavior occurring. Again, I love ice fishing, just don't agree with it on Rice Lake, right now. I think the fishery their is extremely fragile and the walleye are just starting to come back, the bigger perch have basically disappeared and I am not sure that it is worth the risk to open it up to ice fishing, before monitoring the new limits and size restrictions that have just taken effect. I would have watched that for a couple years and then if the fishery looked like it was improving, then opened up Rice for ice fishing. Just my opinion, but I feel like I know Rice Lake as well as anyone and I just want to to make sure that it stays a great fishery for future generations. Just for laughs, it seems like ice fishing is not doing much this year, because I don't see many reports of many good panfish catches
  15. I think your post is typical of misclassification of many of the US Anglers and is very disappointing. We have been coming to Rice Lake for about 40 years and always purchased the conservation license and practiced catch and release. I know some US folks and I know some Canadian folks who do take too many panfish. I have seen both sides doing this. I get so tired of hearing the below. I feel like my family is half Canadian (and proud of it) for as much as we go to Canada. We absolutely love the beauty and people of Canada. We are also for all of the new fish limits, but are against ice fishing in Rice Lake, because of the fact that it will be extremely hard to enforce the ice fishing rules and many walleye and bass will be accidentally caught. (This is coming from someone who loves ice fishing). I have already seen pictures on the net with bass being caught and then let go. That can not be healthy for the fish.
  16. Does anyone think that the MNR's decision to allow ice fishing contradicts it decision to have limits on panfish? So, one end, you limit the panfish fishery, but yet on the other end you allow ice fishing, so that allows a chance to have more panfish harvested? Makes absolutely no sense to me. I don't mind the restrictions and limits on walleye and panfish to help preserve fishing for future generations, but opening up ice fishing will not help. I guess my opinion is in the minority, but it also comes from fishing Rice Lake for over 40 years.
  17. I think it is a big mistake to allow ice fishing at Rice Lake. In my opinion, the fish populations have been declining their and not improving. I also think they got too strict with the limits on the conservation license. Sure hope they know what they are doing, because up until now, they have basically ignored the declining walleye population, smaller perch sizes, etc......
  18. Welcome Back! It was great seeing you again at Kesagami this summer!! Greg
  19. I am thinking of driving up for the Show on Saturday from Ohio. Sounds like it is a fun and big fishing show to go too. Is it so crowded on Saturday that it may not be enjoyable? Thanks!
  20. Hi Dave - great report!!! You always make our experience a fun one at Kesagami. Hopefully we will have the honor of you guiding us this year too. Greg Fish
  21. Have the Port Hope/Ganaraska river started their salmon run yet? Have not seen any reports about them yet. Thanks!
