Hi folks, Some of you may have followed my recent previous thread on a 28HP Johnson I purchased. Misfish (Brian) recommended a fellow in Barrie who specializes in older OMC products but I found out today that it'll be a few weeks before he can look at it since he's going into surgery. I was told it's a 1962 model. I haven't even attempted to start it. I did drain the lower unit and the oil was dark but no water or orther odd discolouration. It came with controls and I beleive it's also a manual start. It lacks a handle but I want to use it as a tiller and I believe this can be done. It has a small lever that appears to act as a throttle (slow, start, fast). A guy who has serivced other motors for me in the past (in north York) isn't interested in touching it - says the motor isn't wortth it!! I'd like a recommendation for a good, HONEST mechanic not too far from the GTA. I'd be willing to travel a little... Thanks in advance He are a couple of pics of the motor:

Thanks fellas... I picked it up last night. It's a big motor. Got it for a good deal (trade). 24:1? Geez, I had no idea...that things going to eat up oil... Is the TC-W3 lower unit gear oil. Where do you buy Amsoil? I think I saw it at CTC. I will require a handle. It has manual start option and I want to operate it as a tiller. If anyone can direct me to a good, HONEST marine mechanic, I'd appreciate it. Misfish recommended soemone in Barrie but the guy is going in for sugery this week and will be out of commission for several weeks. I'm in Vaughan but I'm willing to drive a bit.. \ As for the tiller handle, looks like I'll have to make a few changes there if the thing requires a new bracket. It has a small lever that seems to double as a throttle. Slow, start and fast are indicated next to the lever. It hsn't been started in 2 years... i have no clue of the history. I drained the lower unit and oil was dirty but no water intrusion. Hope soemone can help me out!! thanks -
stick to the 400!! you save on gas and time!!

17 Miles Out..Lake Ontario Amazing !!!!!!
ilario replied to fishindevil's topic in General Discussion
the big spawners wouldn;t be out that far... i used to fish out there too years ago..always dependable and lots of cooperative rainbows and coho..but the big chinooks were not usually caught out that far - and this is evident by his excellent catch which is most coho/bows the cohos spawn later too... I remember having rainbows follow my spoons right to the boat a I retrieved my lures to reset lines...they're fearless out there...i guess they don;t get much attention out in that deep water!! -
that's does look like an intriguing lake with all the bays, inlets, and depth, etc... plus, not a far drive for thos of us in the GTA. How the launch there? What's it cost? is it on the south side?

if I recall correctly, Balsam is a little better for some other activities like swimming..there's a decent little beach, whereas emily is more 'boggy' - as for fishing, it's a toss up

gorgeous coho... they are such nice fish and they fight amazingly... I used to catch tonsd when I'd head out to the blue zone off bluffers.. a dozen in 2 or 3 hours wwasn;t uncomommon... I find they're more cooperative than chinooks..i wish there was more stocking of coho. Most today are either natural or NY fish... i guess the natural stock is a good thing..

Quite frankly, you shouldn't have a problem with traffic at that time of the year at that hour... If you were coming through at 5 PM on a friday in the summer, then I would suggest an alternate... but really, it shouldn't be bad at all and the #400 is 3 lane highway... #27 is ok, but it is single lane and you really can't exceed 80km (50mph). If you get some volume, construction, accident or some ol fart driving 60km then you find it'll set you back a lot more the the 400!! Check for traffic reports on 680 AM radio as you approach the big city... another alternate could be Weston Rd. but as I said, 400 should be all right! Good luck

actually, it;s not that dark... i think its the pic, but they do tend to get bronze-coloured right about now

Any educated guesses? Winner takes it home (kidding!)

I should clarify... 3 couples (4 kids) $750 each! I should also mention that the kids had to play in a "yard" that was strewn with sharp rocks, muds, prickly weeds...he didn't bother to lay down sod... the matresses were piss-stained it was supposed to be fully equiped...furniture was lacking..the fridge wasn;t turned on and took about 15 hours to cool down... tons of annoying, not-so-minor problems.. i think he ran out of cash and he made up a hundred and one excuses...'my tile guy went back to Portugal' 'the sode wouldnl't have grown in properly..' etc... the pictures of the house were up in March... the outside structure was already completed.. in additon, there were pics of what appeared to be a finnished bathroom... bottom line - they promised us it would be completed when we arrived for the record, the previous family apparently lodge several complaints... he didn;t go into detail, but the guy who rented was a lawyer so i can imagine what happened

$2000, not $200!! actually, $2200 to be precise.. wood floors are fine - if you're renting a cabin on a fishing lake. This was advertised as a luxury place that was to be completely furnished with satelite tv, leather sofa, etc...

Hey folks, Went to Snadbanks for a week with the family... did a little fishing at both East and West lakes... West was more productive, especially with the cooperative bass, but most fish were on the smallish size. Some pike as well. Caught a decent one in the outlet river Beach was great and weather was fine too. Our cottage was on the pricey side located right on the water at Salmon Pt road. It's such a nice area...I'd like to buy there someday. Despite the good times, I/we were disappointed somewhat with the cottage. We paid over $2000 (10 people) on two levels - a 'loft' and a lower unit walk-ut concept...the owner occupied the middle floor with his family. The problem was that the cottage wasn't even finnished. Nice guy and went out of his way to be helpful, but he was concerned we'd want compensation. I did complain, but I didn't ask for a cash compensation at the time. Instead, he offered a 'free weekend' during the offseason in the upper loft unit of the house, which doesn't even have a stove. I told him we'd have to think about it..his offer wasnt put on paper. The 'off-season' probably won;t be good for us anyway.. I/we feel like we got ripped off to some extent. It was a lot of fun overall and the cottage has the potential to be really nice once it completelty finnished... Any advice as to how I could pursue this matter to get some forfm of comepensation? I was thinking of asking him for a cash refund and if he refuses, I thought about approaching the Better Business Bureau in Picton to lodge a formal complaint. The other thing I should add is that we rented this through a rental agent who acted onhis behalf. I've already complained to her about this. She seems to want to shrk the responsibility and informed me that I should deal directly with the owner. Here's a pic of the loft washroom - floors unfinnished!

thanks a lot for the offer...very kind of you! I think Lindsay would be a little out of the way..i got the new plugs, and I'll try soemsythetic oil too.. i also brought along the carb cleaner well, off to Sandbanks... we're late!!

East lake eh? tried it 2 years ago for a couple of hours.. didn't catch a thing. Very shallow lake. Maybe I'll have to give it a try again. As for salmon fishing, yes i am rigged for it, but it's my understanding that your have to travel pretty far out over there to get into them. Plus, that area can get pounded when the prevailing westerlies kick up, which is often i hear. As well, I think it peaks in early to mid-July and it tends to die down for salmon over there.. I will bring all my gear to max my options! plus, a stop at the wellington baitshop won't hurt...

another couple of weeks and I'd say the chinooks will be snifing off the piers at night it was actually still pretty silvery... the head had a touh of bronze but the body was quite silvery..here's another pic
