  1. Hi there, this is an extension to a previous post I did a few days ago. I re-packed the bearings on my trailer and took it for a quick spin tonight ( 1 exit on the highway). When I got back, I jacked it up to check and see if there was any play in the wheel and there was in both wheels. Not a lot, but I had none before I took it for a drive. I took out the cotter pin and sure enough was able to get a good full turn out of the nut. I tightened it up, re-installed the cotter pin and took it for another spin on the highway again (1 exit). When I got back, I jacked it up and there was no play in the wheels at all, so I am guessing that the bearings weren't fully seated and taking it for a spin set them. I'm a little nervous about it now though and have a few more questions. As info, it's a 2007 easy hauler (16 foot boat). I bought the boat used, so have no idea how well the bearings were cared for previously, but they looked O.K. when i took it apart. 1. When i touched the hub after the run on the highway, one hub was warm to the touch (not hot), and the other was luke warm. Is that normal? 2. How much does it cost normally to get someone to change the bearings for you. I have a tight budget, but am now wondering if it is a good idea to do. thanks in advance.
  2. Thanks guys, I feel pretty confident that I have done it right. I checked many sights and followed the instructions well. I repacked the bearings with grease (good stuff) Put the rear one in and tapped the seal back on with a block of wood Put the hub back on and inserted the front bearing, spinning the wheel a bit until it seated Tightened the hub nut hand tight, and then just slightly with a wrench. Spun the wheel around once. Backed of the nut and hand tightened it, new cotter pin. The wheel doesn't have any play in it whatsoever, and spins nicely (if I give it a spin, it turns fully around twice before stopping) and no grinding noise whatsoever...very smooth. Correct me if I am wrong (please do), but if the bearings weren't seated right, wouldn't the wheel have a little play in it?
  3. Hi there, I just finished re-packing my trailer wheel bearings for the first time. There is one/two questions I have though. When putting the spindle nut back on, how tight should it be. I seem to be finding conflicting information. Some sites say tighten it tight, some say just finger tight (although when I tightened it finger tight, it wasn't on enough for me to fit the cotter pin through). Also, should the wheel spin "freely" when done? What I mean, is will it be like a skateboard wheel so that when you spin it, it spins for 10 turns until it stops, or should you have to move the wheel with your hand in order to get it to turn? Thanks for your help.
  4. Hi all, looking for some advice. I have booked a trip for myself (going solo) to the lower french for May 24. If it helps, going out of Schell's camp. I really want to target some walleye, but am fairly new to these fish. Any tips/techniques? Weed? Deep? etc. etc. Thanks in advance.
  5. Thanks for all the feedback, I truly appreciate it. I am sure that many members on the board with young ones can relate to me on this....I have waited for this opportunity for a long time. Ever since he was born (and I have another boy that will be a year old in another month) I have dreamed about getting him his first rod and taking him fishing. He now watches some WFN with me and I want to make it truly fun for him so that he enjoys it....in his own way. I am sure that others will agree with me, but when I think about taking my boy fishing for the first time, it is an emotional thing. I can't wait and will definitely post pics after.
  6. Hi there, I am hoping I can get some recommendations. I have a 2 1/2 year old son and I am looking at taking him away this summer for 2 days, just him and I. He will be 3 this July. We have never done this before, so I am looking for some recommendations. I want the first time to be memorable....I want to get him hooked (no pun intended). Here is what I am looking for and I am hoping that someone can help. - Within 2 hours of Toronto....thinking Rice Lake, etc. - Housekeeping cabin that won't break the bank -Family place that has a playground, beach, etc. (I know he won't want to be in the boat all day) -Non-stop panfish action THanks in advance.
  7. You guys are awesome. Thanks for all of the info. Once I narrow it down a bit, I will follow-up on the PM's. Thanks again!
  8. I know it's early, but I am dreaming about it. I am looking to hit a body of water for 2-3 days at opener and was looking for recommendations. I am new to walleye fishing, so would like to hit somewhere where a "newbie" stands a good chance at some fish. I was thinking French River or Pickerel River, but am open to suggestions. Would like walleye and pike and am looking to rent a cheap cottage for 2-3 nights. Any recommendations? For reference, I live in Niagara and I have a 16 foot aluminum boat that I will be bringing, but would prefer if the fishing grounds are within a fairly short boat ride from the accomodations. Thanks in advance for your help.
  9. Thanks so much. I definitely appreciate the feedback from people that have driven them....the dealers response didn't sit well with me. I will invest in some....better safe than sorry.
  10. Hi there, I own a small business that I do deliveries for on the weekends. I used to use my minivan, but have recently upgraded to a Ford E-250 cargo van. I have never driven a rear wheel drive vehicle in the snow and am a little nervous. I looked into snow tires and the Ford dealership told me not to worry about them....all-seasons are fine. Can anyone offer their experience? Are winter tires for the van a good investment?
  11. Thanks for the report. Had a similar experience. Was on the south shore from the 3rd to the 6th. Tons of perch as well, lots of jumbos. No walleye the first 2 days, moved to a different hut the 3rd night and got 3 between 4pm and 5pm. Rapala jig and jig and minnow were the tickets for me.....didn't try spoons.
  12. Thanks...makes perfect sense. About changing things up to see what works.....are you guys also fishing during daylight hours, or just at dawn and dusk? Will the eyes bite during the day, or should I not waste my time?
  13. Heading up to Nipissing on Sunday. I have been trying to do some reading to learn some more about ice fishing and am going to try some of the rapala jigs and airplane jigs with a deadstick as my secondary hole. A lot of articles comment on tipping the treble of jigs with a minnow head (pinched off). My question is 2 part. Do you hook the minnow head on one hook of the treble, or all 3 to maintain proper lure action. Also, do you hook the head by the lips (i.e. head facing toward the body of the lure), or hook the body of the lure (i.e. head facing away from lure). To me it makes more sense for the head to point away as it will look more like a fish, but is the head there only for scent? Thanks.
  14. Thanks for the info so far. I am going out with South Shore Ice Condos...excellent hosts!
  15. Hi there, I haven't posted in a while, so Merry Christmas to everyone. I am hoping that someone can help me with some Nipissing Ice info. 1. Any update on the ice condition? Am heading up to the south shore January 3rd and wondering if the ice will be ready. 2. I have gone the past 2 years. The first year I caught 3 walleye and no perch. Last year I caught 2 walleye and around 60 perch. All fish were caught with either a plain jig head and minnow, or a drop shot with live minnow. I can handle not catching too many...I am there for the experience, but this year I am bringing up 2 friends that have never even fished before. I want to get them excited about it so that we can make it an annual trip. We are staying in a hut, so we won't be travelling and drilling holes. Does anyone have any recommendations for catching some more fish? I picked up some airplane jigs for the magic hour, but am having a hard time finding any tips on the net. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
  16. You guys are awesome. As always, this board has helped me out. Hooked it up and it works like a charm....the wife thinks I'm a genious
  17. AWESOME! Thanks so much. I was on the net until 2am last night trying to figure it out.
  18. Thanks, the rough in did not come with the outlets wired... I need to do that myself. Sooo, if I understand you correctly, I will choose 2 of the 4 wires to connect to the outlet, and make sure I use the same colours to connect to the motor...correct?
  19. Hi there, hoping someone can help. Just moved into a new house with a roughed in central vac. I have finished the piping for it, but am thoroughly confused about the wiring. They used Cat3 wire for the outlets ( 4 wires in total....red, black, yellow, blue). I have standard 2 wire cable to connect it to (red and white). I don't know which of the 4 colours to connect to red and white. Can anyone help?
  20. Thanks for the feedback! I will wait for the Garmin Etrex to come on sale again.
  21. Hi there, my local CT has a Magellan 500LE Explorist GPS down to $129.99 from $299.99. Anyone have any reviews on it? I will be using it for fishing only...marking spots, etc. Thanks in advance.
  22. Hi all, this will be my first year winterizing a motor and there are a couple of things I am confused about that I am hoping you can help me with. For reference, I have a 2001 Mercury four stroke 40 hp. 1. Is fogging necessary? In my service manual, it doesn't mention fogging the engine, just running stabilizer through the fuel system and injecting some oil in the plugs. If fogging is necessary, I can't figure out where to spray the fogging? Below is a link to the carburetor intake information for my motor...if someone can point it out. http://1manual.com/Mercury%20manuals/Servi...857046r1/3b.pdf 2. For lubrication, it states that I should lubricate the motor at several points through "lubrication fitting" (see below link). Do I need a special tool for this? (no "special tool for lubrication" jokes). http://1manual.com/Mercury%20manuals/Servi...857046r1/1b.pdf Thanks a lot for any help you can offer. It's my first REAL boat. I just bought it this year and want to make sure I take good care of her.
  23. I am going to head to Balsam for some night fishing for walleye. Launching out of the park. Is night fishing any good on balsam? I was planning 3am until 10am or so, slow trolling harnesses and dragging jigs tipped with minnow....good? I need to catch a walleye this year....personal mission!
  24. Thanks for the info. I'll try drifting some shoals for walleye and the other spots for bass. Will post how I do. Thanks!
  25. Hi all, heading up to Ahmic Lake Resort on August 30th for 2 days. It's a weekend with my wife, but I have been granted fishing priviledges in the mornings (before she wakes up). Can anyone offer some advice for fishing? I have a boat, but due to the "limited" amount of time fishing, I would prefer to stay relatively close to the resort. Would love to catch a few walleye....tips, locations, anything would be appreciated. Thanks.
