  1. He does refer to it as being a record musky in the video himself. With musky you gotta be real careful when you say thee words. at 46 seconds in the video... "Thats when we knew we had a record muskie on"

Later the guys asks if its a record and he said "It depends on who you ask.." Impliying he believes its a record.

I don't feel bad for any flaq he takes, I mean if he is a Musky angler he knows what Record means. I mean seriously congrats and good for him, but he knows what the term "Record Musky" entails, just as every musky angler out there.

  2. Talked to an NHL'r this weekend, and if you're contract expires at the end of this season it doesn't get extended until the next one. P.S. he said its likely to be a lockout. The players wanted to play under the current deal until a new CBA got negotiated. It should be mentioned that every team(short of 3) were profitable last year. Clearly This is a LOCKOUT and not a strike. This has nothing to do with anything other than the @sshats at the league wanting to scrap the season to put more money in there pockets.

He said that if there is a lockout he is gonna go to play in europe and most guys he talked to will also go play in europe. If they lock the players out he will miss out on his last year of his contract and will come back as a UFA. I told him to play for the leafs when he comes back so he can get me tickets. haha. Plus I think he would be a great fit for the Blue and White. AND he LOVES to fish. Serious hard core bass guy.

  3. Tough to claim anything a world record unless its been verified. ESPECIALLY a muskie. I mean heck even a record perch is hotly debate.

Giant? Huge? Awesome? yup all are true here... but World Record?

O'briens fish was also 65 pounds. So for this to be a claimed 65 pound fish it would obvioulsy need to be weighed and measured properly. There is NO way you could call one fish a world record when a completly unofficial measurement weighs it the exact same as the current record.

JMHO but seriously a Huge , Giant and Awesome fish.

  4. The transmission would break. Ever tried to shut a door on a windy day? or open a door on a windy day?

Bill the OP mentioned this is an existing entry door to a garage. I presume its a steel door and likely somewhat heavy. The motors in commercial automated doors are significantly heavier built than a wiper motor and transmission. They need to have significant power to shut a door against the wind. They also shut very slowly in comparison to what a windshield wiper works at for safety reason.

I would say if they were making a new small door, I would go with a sliding setup and take the entire unit from a sliding minivan door. It even has safety mechanism built in to protect against cutting a dogs head off. As for a timer you could put it on a dual trigger, a timer and a pressure plate on the inside and outside so between say 7-9am the door is activated and if the dog steps near the door it opens.

Might scare the crap out of it though... err prematurely that is. :)

  5. I doubt a wiper motor would open the door, also don't forget that you are going to need to turn the handle unless you are planning on removing it altogether or are you talking about a sliding door? The have automatic door openers, and I can tell you that the motors in those are a heck of alot more powerful than that in a wiper motor. If you are going for the wreckers I would recomend looking for a minivan with an autmatic door closer from a caravan or something like that over a wiper motor.

  6. And in response to those that said there will be hockey? The jets release a statement to there fans saying to be prpeared for the eventuality of a lockout... the deadline is sept 15th... one week from today. The two sides are not close to eachother regardless of either side making money. I say there will be a lockout. How long is anyones guess, I doubt a whole season would get trashed though.

  7. The thickness of the mono or floro leader gives you the abbrasion resitance from the teeth. Its not about raw breaking strength. I would recommend the thickest leaders you can afford. 100 pounds minimum. Go with a longer leader than you are used to as well, 18" is the length I use for a floro leader. get teh pre tied ones with good clasps they will last several muskies, before getting too nicked up to work. Dito as above, they protect the fish better than even with coated steel wires.

Even in the south end of Pigeon I have caught a 49" musky so be prepared.

I think your gear is fine for starting out, I would have gone with 50 pound braid at a minimum, 65 even better. If you get the bug you will be using a baitcaster in no time.

IMO a baitcaster gives you a few benefits.

    1) Generally more cranking power

    2) Generally stronger so it won't break

    3) Stronger drag

    4) generally more line capacity

    5) options of better rods for musky

    Things to keep in mind....

Try not to over play a musky. Your goal should be to have it released asap after hooking it. Be prepared to have it run under the boat. Be CAREFUL with teeth and hooks, in the panic of having a musky in the boat its very easy to get yourself hooked or bit.

Preperation is critical for the fish and yourself

This means having your camera ready to go,

Your partners informed what to do, camera, pliers, cutters, netman etc...

Your net ready to go(bigger the better, a craddle is relatively cheap and will suffice as long as you have two people, they also take up less room in the boat.

I started musky fishing with a heavy action spinning outfit and I landed mmany musky on that setup before moving to a baitcaster setup. If you are prepared, organized and informed the gear you have should be fine.

I made lots of mistakes when I started musky fishing as do many, but listen to the advice people give you and you should be fine.... here is a little video we shot when we caugth a musky, as you can hear near the end panic ensued even though we had fished musky many times and had all the gear... we were not totally ready but everything worked out well and when it came down to it, the camera was dropped on purpose to get the big net... :) BTW that rod as you can see is fully stressed and its an XH Musky rod. this is from pigeon...

  8. Ron is employed by CBC, CBC has a stake in the NHL lockout and a stake in keeping people optimistic and intereted. This article was meaningless. Bettman screwed the pooch the last time, and now he is trying to play catchup. I doubt anyne here would take a paycut like they are offering the players. The owners said they wont play without a new CBA. Case closed. The season won't start on time, neither the players nor the owners, nor bettman cares what may seem logical. Its all about the Money Money Money, They care about the fans or the game.

Oh yah, and what a great move to hire someone from within a losing organization to run the show. WTG MLSE you morons!!!!

  9. I have been a long time shimano guy with dozens of shimano rod and reel purchase from there top of the line to the lower end stuff... but to be honestI have become a real big fan of the St.Croix Premier's. Excellent rods for the price. I have two of them, and I fish Bass tournaments again next year, I'll likely be selling off my shimano stuff in the spring. I also have a nice G.Loomis but its balance just feels a bit off for my liking.

Since I don't know the price of the spiel rod you bought, but it sounds like its a fair bit more than a premier(not a high end rod by any means) Its really hard to compare the two. I have a cumar that blows the Gloomis and the premier out of the water in terms of weight and sensitivty, however since I bring at least a dozen rods with me every time I go fishing, cost is a factor. I can't and wouldn't compare a Cumara to a Premier, no more than I would compare a Convergence to an Avid.

I would say that in the 95-120 dollar price range a St.Croix Premier is one the best out there. If I was going over 200(and I have several that are), so far for me the cumare is the most sensitive hands down.

  10. Personally, I love nhl hockey. If I wanted to watch second rate, not good enough players I would watch ohl or ahl. I watch the nhl because they are the best. If you had two tv shows on about fishing. One amature that knew nothing about fishing, and say dave mercer, who would you watch? I might flip to the amature for jokes, but I am gonna watch dave. NHL or bust for me.

  11. I tend to trim mine by bending them back to the hook and adding a little bit. I think I saw a video on youtube where a guy recomended it as well. Mighta been iaconelli I can't recall. I'll see if I can find it.

I mean you don't want it too short otherwise it won't deflect the weeds, but the ones in your pic are pretty huge.

  12. Well, as luck would have it after getting my trolling moto back from being repaired, I was out yesterdayand the rope broke on me... Yup, I fell out of the boat. No biggie but I did get completly soaked was in about 5 feet of water. I am glad I had a spare starter rope in the boat kit I keep, even though mine is an electric start.

So... my word of advice... keep a spare rope in your gear for your trolling motor.

The day went along pretty good and I was able to hook into this big girl. I weighed it on a digital and won't post the weight, cause I know how people love to start crap here for no real good reason. I will say this is my yearly PB for a bucket, and I have caught several 5's this year prior to this one.
