  1. Brooks Cottages on Big Caribou Lake

    I'll second Brooks.

Unless something has changed this year this is not an option for ice fishing. When the Ministry reorganized the zones a couple years back moving Caribou to zone 11 it closed off lake trout north of 522 till Feb 15 which really limited their ice fishing so they stopped. I would contact them first to confirm.

  2. One thing I miss from living in Hamilton is the Pho places... Good god that stuff is good! Not to mention cheap, there is one in belleville I have yet to try it though.

I was in Belleville a couple years back for a hockey tournament and my wife and I had a craving for Pho. We went to Pho Viet and it was really good. Comparable to many we have been to in the GTA.

  3. I acquired a taste for Chinese Food when I lived at Spadina and College 25 years ago. I can never turn down a good Dim Sum restaurant and love BBQ pork and duck. I am not a huge fan of mainstream Chinese restaurants and love going back to the old stomping grounds and visiting the restaurants.

I also love Vietnamese food, roti and Japanese cuisine.

  4. Without question if you plan on ice fishing and plowing get a set of tracks. Last year I had use of a machine with tracks and this year I purchased the Camplast Tatou 4S for my TRV500. And if you're going to plow with an ATV you have to stay on top of the snow accumulation, it won't move a large capacity of snow. You're better off with a blower if that's the case.

  5. The bucket trick works great, but don't use antifreeze.....it will kill any other pet that goes near it.

Water works just fine, and even the empty pail is enough to hold the mouse until you get to it.

    S.

You will want to use plumbing antifreeze if you are using it in a cottage during the winter. No risk of pets and there is no smell to the carnge and no cannibalism due to falling on the ice and staying there for an extended period of time.

  6. Just picked up a Garmin GPSmap 62S from Kijiji Boutique and would like to load some maps. I would be using this in Ontario for hunting and also on my ATV while ice fishing back lakes. I am looking for advice on the use of the unit as well as suggested maps to download.

  7. The first one comes with a story. The first year we bought our cottage my son and his buddy were fishing off the back of my boat and my son proceeded to embed a treble from a Spook into the back of his buddy's head on a cast. We now call that spot "Hook-Head Point". Here are a couple more:

    Hungry Bay

    Bucket Bay

    The Merry-Go-Round

    Flag Pole Shoal

    The Duck Shoal

    The Toad Shoal

    The Outlet

  8. Truly sad actually

as far as revenue generators if your doing nothing wrong and everything is in order you have nothing to worry about wasting gas I think is a good trade off for enforcement

The pukes that did this need to be in a cell for a bit and be tagged for full restitution

and on the SAR end it puts people at risk to have a hole punched in the blanket

Im behind them 100% they are there to do a job and they do it well like I said if all your ducks are in a row you have nothing to worry about

IM GLAD THEY ARE OUT THERE

you get fines because you are not in compliance ....pretty straight forward logic if you ask me!!

    Cheers

    Peter

Don't get me wrong, what happen to this boat is a crime and those who did this should have to pay. As for compliance, there is a grey area for some but if your mandate is to generate revenue then there is no grey area, they label it "Zero Tolerance". So for the people that I know who have been fined for having a floating flashlight with dead batteries or a life jacket with a slight tear in a seam or being 15' from their dock in a paddleboat in 3' of water and not having a safety kit I would say that it's for the sheer objective of raising revenue and in no way the public safety.

And you're right they are out there to do their job only, it's not like they're telling us who we should or should not vote for.

  9. I'm suprised by all the letters in the "Comments" section at the end of the article. It's like people are angry that the OPP is infringing on their rights to drink and boat.

The comment theme in the article is similar to here. People are tired of the OPP's charade of using public safety as the catalyst for handing out fines. I believe that some of their work is for the good of all us, just not all of their work.

  10. Just heard on the radio today that there has already been more water/alcohol related deaths this year than in all of last year! Just what we need, another police boat out of service!

There were only 4 water/alcohol deaths last year, but total water fatalities are not down. Good news is people have realized that water and booze don't mix. The bad news is we are always going to have accidents and people are going to die.

  11. Hi Guys, I used to be on this forum years ago but for some reason haven't been in a while. Anyway, this discussion was brought to my attention and I thought I would clarify some comments that were made, even though it has been over for a while. I am with the Scugog Lake Stewards and it is NOT in our mandate to close the ice fishing season for all species. However, we would like to see the ice fishing for Walleye to be closed in order to allow the population to recover. There is a lot of pressure on the lake all year long and we believe the walleye population cannot withstand this constant pressure even with slot sizes. There are only three areas in FMZ 17 that allow ice fishing for walleye, one section on the Trent which has very few walleye left and the Crowe Lake which also has few left. These three location traditionally had walleye ice fishing season and when the new Zones were formed they kept that status, I assume it was like a Grandfather clause. Regardless, there is plenty of MNR data that show a massive decline in walleye population, as well as data that suports a healthy walleye population could still be sustained because the lake conditions have not drastically changed like other lakes in the Kawarthas, i.e. Balsalm clearing up due to zebra mussels. Please see the attached MNR document. Thanks.

Yep and they used the same arguement in 1997 when the Lake Wahwashkesh Conservation Association was succesful in closing off the lake. Their angle was to apply to the MNR about creating a temporary fish sanctuary on the entire lake from Dec 1 to the middle of May due to the lack of lake trout. Ice fishing is still closed and and that has not changed.

The fishing pressure on the Kawarthas is greater then it's ever been. The stocks cannot naturally keep up with the pressure. I don't care how many spawing beds are rehabilitated, they can't keep up. The way I see it is they have 2 options (inside joke), first support the fishery with a massive stocking program. Many of the local stakeholders should support the program, with either resources or funds. Option #2 would be to run the Kawarthas in the same way as some of the ZEC's in Quebec are run, after a certain amount of fishing pressure the lakes are closed off to fishing.

  12. The closed season has really helped the Cisco. I remember the schools and schools under our ice huts in the early '80s. Lots and lots of fish then bam!.. nothing for decades. Seeing 'em again under the ice is very cool and it probably won't be long before there is a season for them again.

    Yep, won't be long:
