  1.

    Whooping cranes

While fishing at a small remote lake in Grey county Ontario. I heard very loud coming from across the lake. As they moved closer I was able to see 3 Whooping cranes doing some sort of mating dance. They would do it for a while then move to another location and do it again. The sound was so loud it seemed to reverberate for miles.

I would suspect that these were Sandhill Cranes. There are only about 400 Whooping cranes left in the world and most of them are in the midwest. Currently there are not reported sightings of Whooping Cranes in Ontario. I had 2 Sandhill Cranes fly over my boat last Saturday while fishing the Pickeral River, it's the first time I have seen them there.

  2. I have a cottage on Wilson Lake which is on the system. The fishing this year has been the best since we purchased the place in 2010, maybe getting to know the water better. Lots of smallmouth, walleye fishing has been OK and plenty of northerns in the 4 to 7 pound range. There are trout in Wilson and Duck Lakes but haven't gone after any as yet, I typically target them through the ice.

I have never stayed at Pine Grove but it looks nice. There is a lot of boat traffic that passes it so it will be exposed to wake, although that time in Sept it should be minimal. Another place to consider would be Wright Point Resort:

Nice resort, good people. You're still close to Toad Lake and have Wilson/Duck/Pigeon that you can fish.

We have had water issues this year with a hole in the bottom of the outlet dam and the level is 15 inches below normal. No problem with navigating the river or the lakes just be a little more careful close to shore. After getting no help from the MNR, a few locals went up and fixed the dam, here's the story from the Nugget:

PM me if you have any questions

  3. Why do you have to travel so fast, the answer is simple, because you can. A car is no different. For the most part, it's not the machine that is the issue, it's the operator. Whether it be a bass boat, jet ski, ATV, large cruising boat, etc. The list goes on and on about machines that for some reason or another people have issues. Unfortunately you don't have to pass an I.Q. test or an etiquette test to buy any of them. From the video I would say the operator of this Ranger is a good one. He made sure he had a clear lane before taking off, he is made sure his passenger was set, he is wearing a PFD and he has on hearing protection.

From my experience, it doesn't matter what kind of boat it is, an "idiot" behind the wheel is still an "idiot".

  4. Haha! Thanks for the advice! I did see it was only 1 hour. But as people with no means to get on the water, even an hour is worth it! And just like I know I'm going to win the lottery with every ticket I buy...I'm also going to catch a really big fish in that hour!whistling.gif!

It says you can buy a max of 5. Why not purchase 4 and that 1 hour of fishing just turned into 4 hours of fishing.

  5. I guess you'll have to pull over and park to check it, otherwise you're using a hand held electronic device while driving.

On my cottage commute I have a wife, 2 kids, 2 cats and a dog along for the ride. One of the passengers can run the app.

  6. As the topic says, my trailer tires are cupped pretty badly, but i think i'll still use them for one final season. Anyone see any safety issue in this? There is still some tread left, just the cupping.

So, anyone know why this is happening and how I can ensure it doesn't happen w/ my next pair? Hauling a 16.5 ft Lowe aluminum. Boat is tied down tight to trailer. And air pressure is correct.

    Thanks.

Cupping can also be a result of weak of poor suspension. Some people use their boat to carry stuff away which overloads the trailer creating the same condition as a weak suspension, which will lead to cupping. Best solution is to check your trailer springs, you might have to add a leaf or two and don't load the boat full of stuff when trailering.

If your plan is to use the cupped tires this season make sure you have a spare, a bottle jack and lug wrench that fits the trailer wheel nuts, you're likely to need them. Really important for the lug wrench as your trailer wheel nuts may not be the same size as the vehicle wheel nuts so your vehicle wrench will be useless.

  7. So I ordered a new Lund 1800 Alaskan with a 75 hp yamaha tiller late March. I just got a call from them

saying the motor is going to take 2+ months to get. This would stretch my delivery time-frame to 4 months.

Am I being un-reasonable thinking this is rediculous that it took a month to find this out and that I have to wait

4 months for a new boat / motor combo?

The first thing I would do if I were you is change my handle, sounds like you are no longer RangerGuy. After that I would contact Yamaha to confirm what you have been told. Then I would then find out if Honda, Merc, Evinrude can do it faster and see what Yamaha is willing to do in order to keep a customer. Get the dealer to do the same. The dealer should be working on your behalf, a good dealer would have already done this.

  8. Check out Old Mirror Lodge near Loring...Use to go here years ago and I was a good time. New owners now.

I have a cottage just down the river on Wilson Lake. We had dinner at Old Mirror Lodge twice last summer and it was fantastic. They have an outdoor patio and you get to watch the sunset over the water. Food was great and the people seemed very nice.

  9. Every time I watch a fishing or hunting show, I get really peeved when they have their disclaimer about this program might not be suitable for all viewers. It rankles me that fishing and hunting are legal activities and it's portrayed like it's anti- social behavior. I stared taking my son fishing when he was two years old and I believe that it made our relationship that much stronger. If more families spent more time hunting and fishing we wouldn't have the problems that we have today. Does this bother anyone else?

HGTV does the same for Holmes on Homes

  10. Sad to see him gone. Saw in the paper last week that he was in the final stages of his battle. Never saw him with The Band but did take in a number of club appearances in Toronto he did a number of years back with Rick Danko. And now they're both gone.

  11. I got rid of my steering issues by lifting the motor on the transom to the right height. I had to hold on for dear life before doing this, now when I am on plane and trimmed properly i can (but don't) let go the steering and I go straight. I had tried to adjust that little fin but found that it only made a difference when I took off. Cause I don't think that the small fin touches the water when on plane.

This is only advisable if the motor is bolted to the transom.

  12. I didn't think these motors had the fin. I know the original design had a shear pin prop and an exhaust port in place of the fin. OMC then changed it to a thru-hub exhaust but I am not sure they put in the fin in place of the exhaust port. I have 30 Evinrude on my pontoon boat at the cottage and I will check when I open it up. Justin, failing the fin look for the steering tension adjuster which should be located close to the pivot shaft that the steering is anchored to. It will be slotted head, 7/16 bolt threaded through a spring. It must be too loose, adjust the tension until you're happy.

  13. The Leafs and the Raptors are marketing marvels. These teams draw in big dollars, (don't know the comparison to same market size teams in the States) and as far as a business is concerned are successes. These companies aren't in this to win a Stanley Cup, they aren't in it to win games or make it to the playoffs. They're in it to show return to the shareholders and that's the problem. I'll probably be called an idiot but I look at some of the football teams like the Pittsburgh Steelers who are owned by the same family for a significant period of time, they seem to still have a passion for winning versus corporate owned teams. If the fans started staying away and let it be known we expect a return for the money we spend, maybe the Leafs and Raptors would make the next step to be more successful. As long as the corporation is making money with the status quo, that's where it'll stay.
