For Shiitake mushroom logs here's a couple of commercial links, but these pre-purposed logs may be too pricey at $30-$35:

When I try to take pictures of fish under the water, from above the water like this, I always get way too much glare on the water surface in the result. I've been disappointed trying to photograph spawning fish in the past. What's the secret to success in doing this?

  3. Hey guys, looking at upgrading the electronics on the boat. Specifically looking at the Humminbird 898c HD SI to go along with the I-Pilot Link equipped Terrova I just picked up.. From what I've seen, I'll be dropping close to $400 more to purchase the same unit up here as I will in the US. I'm all for supporting Canadian vendors, but not to the tune of an extra $400 out of my pocket. I've been looking around for the past few weeks and it looks like I can get the unit I'm after for just under $1300 US. If anyone can give me some suggestions on some Canadian retailers I should check out, I'd really appreciate it.

I'm not sure if this is the exact unit you are seeking , but it seems to be $1433.00 there is no shipping cost for super saver shipping and it is Canadian pricing at Amazon.ca.

  4. I also believe Rice come back perfectly times the carp die off. I will check some stuff later. Think 1999 was the carp die off. I'm sue somebody will no.

Rice has been crasy for 6 years now.

If you mean the massive carp die-off where the municipalities had to haul the rotting carcasses away, it was in 2007. Here's some evidence of the timing:

  5. Finally, after countless sightings and reports, there is definite proof that cougars exist in Ontario

The MNR will have to change their tune now

The MNR states "For the last five years, ministry researchers have been looking for evidence. With the public’s help, they have documented cougar tracks. They’ve found scat (feces) which has tested positive for cougar DNA. And they’ve seen evidence of cougars in the distinctive way other animals are killed."

  6. Speaking from past experience, I can tell you that:

    - taking steps to exclude your place is the ONLY way to permanently get rid of the problem (the right-angle buried screening and one way door, fixing up or repairing whatever has allowed them entry, etc.)

    - Forget the mothballs as raccoons have absolutely no reservations in picking them up and getting rid of the foul smelling things just as you would. Skunks aren't as adept at that kind of thing, so they are probably more effective with them. Also, you'll have to put up with the smell of the mothballs too if you go that route, and you will get tired of it it is close to your house.

Just eliminating the particular raccoons that are currently there (fatally or other means) is ineffective in the long term. Why? Because the next wandering raccoon will move in using the same technique as the one you just got rid of, and he/she knows it's a good spot because he/she can smell the den of the former occupant (industrial strength deodorizers can help a little there).

Use the exclusion approach always. If you want to add in your eradication method of choice as others have suggested, go ahead, but always combine it with a way of sealing off and excluding the entrance to their den.

Each female usually has at least three youngsters each summer, and each of them will heading out on their own before next spring to find their own den sites too. Do the math and shudder.

    I sincerely wish you luck.

  7. I finally got electrical power back today after Wednesday evening's storm. One day into the outage, I dug the generator out of storage and turned it on for the first time ever. It managed to keep my fridge, freezer, sump pump, and my teenager's cell phone charger going for the past several days (priority order would vary depending on who you asked :) ).

It would have been really nice to have been able to get my submersed well pump going, for toilet flushes, hand-washing, etc. The problem is that it is hard-wired in so I couldn't easily hook it up to the generator. Any idea how much they draw? Is it worth getting a receptacle and plug added for the next time? Does anyone else run their well pump off their generator in situations like this?

  8. .....and I thought it was funny when my kid said "dad I got the garbage can, it was don by the mailbox", which is about 8 houses down the street.

There has been a lot of games of "find your bluebox" today for sure, me included. Unfortunately, I'm also aware of people with lost satellite dishes, lost shingles, fence damage, and downed trees. Still relatively mild in comparison to the south-east U.S. where, sadly, there was devastation and lost lives.

  9. Man has the bite been slow the last few days, I was out last night, 4 boats I don't think I saw more than 4 crappie landed all evening and all were under 11". I think the bite is over already. I am starting to wonder if it is sun light rather than water temp that affects the spawn.

Every one of the crappie I caught the other night were full of eggs, so the spawn has definitely not happened yet.
