  1. Just wanted to "chime" in here guys...thanks for the overwhelming response to my question...lots of good advice and lots of great offers on rods...looks like I will actually be getting two used rods for what I was looking to spend. Can't wait to give them a shot...probably end up getting hooked like I did 25 years ago when I took up river steelheading! I'm thinking that adrenaline surge hooking up with a musky must be amazing...one of the responses mentioned underpowering/overstressing the fish, and it is a very valid point...I don't want to overplay them, and ALL will be released...if I want a mount that bad it would be a replica. I love eating fish, but, keeping a musky is not necessary, unless of course it is so badly hooked it would die anyway. Thanks guys, hopefully some other musky novices are learning from this thread as well.

  2. 1) It's a report, be thankful people share them

    2) Even though blurring backgrounds is kinda funny/stupid.....not to mention it ruins the picture....who cares?

    3) Why do A LOT of posts on this site turn into online flaming matches?!

Just be happy for the kid.

    Man oh man!

Good job Mike...keep up the good work.

AMEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You think this site is bad, Jamie...you should see the Niagara one! See you on Sunday for some walleye, dude!!

  3. Medium heavy for pike/musky??? I think you better make sure by taking your reel with you to the store and mounting it to the rod and checking for rod flex with the line threaded through. I use a medium heavy IM7 Daiwa 7' for mostly smaller pike 30" and big bass and there is PLENTY of rod flex when the pike suddenly freaks out when it gets near the boat, probably a bit too much flex. Had that rod for about 5 years now, serving me well, but I use a heavy rod for lures over 1.5 oz. Medium heavy is the sweet spot for the majority of my fishing, but heavy rod is better for bigger pike 35+".

Also have you given some thought to what weight lures you are going to throw. A 1oz is fine with most medium heavies, but if you are going for bigger pike/muskie with big lures weighting 1.5oz to 5oz I think you are going to wreck your arm and maybe the rod. If you are hoping to catch bigger pike and muskies 35+" I suggest you check heavy rods that can handle bigger lures and bigger fish.

I like the long rod handle for pike so I can butt it against my stomach when fish fighting, takes all the stress away from my arms. Personal preference I guess.

Mind you, you can catch a muskie using a barbie kids rod, but I can't imagine how long that took to fight. :)

I stopped looking for brand name as much as looking for features for the price and warranty. If you can find a IM7 or better with a great reel seat and fuji or better guides that sounds like a good deal for $80 and taxes. Line is very important too. Found power pro to be great for pike, but I use a fluorocarbon leader 80+lb too. Pike can cut through power pro quickly I have learned! I heard the recoil guides make a lot of noise with braided line so I'm not sure if those are the better option than sic guides.

btw I looked up the compre since we seem to have a lot of fans here, $128+taxes at Lebarons so it might be out of you budget if you can't find it cheaper.

Thanks for an extremely comprehensive reply...the reason I was leaning toward medium heavy is that I wasn't anticipating throwing lures over 1 ounce, but having seen enough muskies and larger pike caught on tv (as well as some pike I have landed myself) they do like to put on that explosion close to the boat...I looked up the compres as well and found the prices about the same, but, solopaddler's reply concerns me...I have never had three rods break on me in my life, be it salmon, steelhead or warm water fish. Thanks to everyone else who has replied so far as well.

  4. Alright guys/gals...in my quest for a musky (one of my goals for this year)...I need a beefier rod, medium/medium heavy...any suggestions for a decent one under $100...probably won't use it more than 10 times this year so don't want to break the bank on it. Something of good quality for the money. Thanks in advance.

  5. Still have a lightning rod, that was purchased almost 27 years ago...Trilene XT is still the best mono in my books...yeah it sucks that you had trouble with the container, but, tell that to Berkley, because it sounds like that is who this post is addressed to. If it bothers you that much...don't buy it...nothing hurts companies more than losing business, but, tell them why...maybe they will do something to fix it. Good luck!

  6. Mike, here is a pic of Solo on a trip we went on last year. Casting deck was custom built by my oldman, along with the floor etc.. You can see the pedestal seat was removed for the trip... It also has an opening on the face of the deck for storage etc... the second pic you can see the mount my oldman made up for the bowmount..

Those are some nice upgrades Bill...got me thinking now!! Would be nice to have the option of a bow mount trolling motor!

  7. Send me a pic of your casting deck/boat then lol. The max for the 14 WB is 30hp. I can upgrade it to a 2 stroke 30hp for $300...Seems good to me.

The upgrade in HP is a good move as I stated earlier...however, maybe we can get some of the guys that have a 2 stroke to chime in...personally I would wait until I had the $$$$'s to buy the 4 stroke. Good luck, Mike!!!

  8. Sorry, costumer service with Legend meant. I think the 14 Widebody is all I can get and it would be in late spring. I would like to put in a small casting deck upfront and leave the back bench seat in with the two sideseats.

A 25hp 2 Stroke can be upgraded to with no extra cost or a 30hp 2 stroke can be upgraded with a additional $299 thrown in. Anything else is too expensive for this purchase. I'm sure I would put on a 45lb Bow Mount on the front in the future so the max 30hp would probably be best choice.

    Any ideas on gas consumption...

Hey, Mike...not sure about the 2 stroke, hopefully someone else can help you on that, the 4 stroke I have runs on a tank forever, and that is without an electric trolling motor. The casting deck up front sounds like a good idea, my pro sport has the split in back, middle (live well and storage) then a bench and a small seat up front.

  9. Thanks, just looking some some info on the boar their selves, how were the dealers, the customer service with Lund boats in general...etc

    MTBF

Legend or Lund??? By the models you have mentioned I am guessing Legend...bought mine slightly used at a non-Legend retailer last year. Have heard good and bad, same as any other dealer...as far as the boat itself, 14 ft pro sport....so far so good! One thing you are going to hear over and over is they come underpowered, which is true....upgrade in your horsepower if you buy one.

  10. The bit was INSANE today! Best day on the ice the whole season so far!

40+ fish, with six lbers, three 9 lbers and a MONSTER 12 lber!!

I HIGHLY recommend anyone looking for a trophy walleye, to hit up the Bay right now!!

Again, all fish hit in the 24-28 ft range, using Northland Macho Minnows and Buckshots!

Save some of those fish for next week Jamie!!!!! Nice to hear, how big was the party of fishermen/women? Can't wait to get out...nine days now.
