  1. I couldn't agree with you more Dan. The experience of getting in a plane and flying somewhere is neat, but it doesn't make a difference in terms of "quality" fishing. I personally would have a hard time paying that kind of coin unless that plane met me at pearson so I could avoid the drive...

Yeah, there's no doubt whatsoever you guys are absolutely right. I've done more than my share of those kinds of trips myself.

The big advantage of a fly in is the ease of planning and logistics. You can take off for a 3-4 night fly in trip to an outpost camp with nothing else to plan and bring other than you're food, clothes and fishing tackle.

Concentrate on nothing else other than fishing and having fun.

The back lakes/bush bashing trips are awesome, but they're also a lot more involved....

They're both great in their own way....

  2. Tennessee Guy...did you ever fly in to Birch??? We are going there in early July...heard it is very good fishing...would love any help! I agree about Peter...and that is exactly how my dad is and that is why we like him so much!!!

If that's the Birch Lake that feeds into the Cat Lake chain of lakes then I'm familiar with it. I paddled through year a while back....

  3. Looking forward to the next Mighty Ducks feature film in about 2 decades. The movie, a Disney Pixar film, based on a true story, will retell the road to victory for a bunch of have-not Californians from the ghettos of Anaheim. How they overcame a thousand and one odds and were slum gritty, but cleaned themselves up, only to play real gritty in the end. A team of bums, drunks, dwarves and Invincibles (like Vinny Papale of the Philly Eagles, or Rudy from that other football movie) turned highly conditioned intellectuals which studied the game tapes of past Lord Stanley winning teams such as the foul weathered Hurricanes and Lightning of other southern nasty climes and "8-Mile" streets.

A bearded McCauley Culkin is rumored to play the part of Neidermayer, and, that kid that says "I see dead people" in the 6th Sense is working on beefin' up his forearms to have enough elbow to play the Prongz.

It'll be a tearjerker with a happy ending for sure. Blossom of NBC's past awesome hit "Blossom" has successfully made it through her sex change and will be playing the role of a nasty little rich kid from the city of Federal Taxes that all Senators fans had a role in punishing the rest of the nation of Canada with. Blossom's character name in the movie will be "Alfie," but the writers will have retired his number 11 for 666 instead and he'll wear a helmet with horns, carry a pitch-forked hockey stick, and have hoove liked skates.

    :clapping::D:D:D:D Now that was funny!

  4. Mike with all due respect I kind of dissagree with you on #1 with the cost of even outpost location "Good" outfitters are trying to fill spots from the people that were used to getting deals before became so costly and have quit going. Face to to face is one way of negotiating extra fees ie; we bring certain amount of people you wave the weight restriction.

I'm not saying that all outfitters that do the show thing are good but that's how we found a good one.

There is a circuit that does the US during the winter months and it is called the all Canadian Sports Show and there are many there that I have seen ads in mags. and favorable reports from on some of the other message boards (yes I said others outloud

    Whopper

It was a "general" statement Phil....there's always exceptions to every rule.

I still maintain that the best outfitters don't do shows anymore. Between word of mouth, repeat business and especially the advent of the internet they just don't have to do them anymore.

    cheers :Gonefishing:

  5. I've been on dozens over the years so I have a bit of experience here. When you're going blind, first time ever, the best thing by far you can do is solicit advice from a resource like OFC, or (can I mention another board?LOL!), Walleye Central. After you've narrowed down your choices, ask your selected outfitter(s) for references you can call. If they're not willing to give you any I'd shy away from them.

Many will tell you to attend sports shows where a bunch of outfitters have booths and you can talk to them face to face. I disagree. The best outfitters don't attend those shows at all, they're business is all repeat and word of mouth. The guys at the shows are usually the ones who have to fight for every booking they get.

Fly in trips can range from 5 star expensive lodges where your pampered, to relatively inexpensive "outpost camp" trips where you take care of everything yourself including food. They're usually smaller, more intimate lakes with the outpost being the only camp on the lake.

If you're more self sufficient and appreciate the isolation, the outpost camp is the way to go. Definitely more my cup of tea...

Anyhow, you can do all the checking and asking as I mentioned above OR you can just ask me! :D

I'd be happy to offer my recommendations to anyone who's interested.

    cheers, Mike

  6. may hate Alfredson but her is the reason they got that far.

Was that a Freudian slip or did you mean to say that? :D

I have to admit I felt bad for the Sen's and their fans last night, that was painful to watch.

    Congrat's to Anaheim, they're a heckuva team...

  7. Ah yes, Kesagami, It brings back memories....Some great, some good, some not so good.

It's definitely one of Ontarios premier fly in lodges and it looks as though their policies have improved the fishing over the last 15 years.

Thanks for the report TJ, looks like you two had a fun time (but then you always look like you're having a blast ;)).

You guys sure get around, first B.C., now Kesagami.....where are ya going next?

  8. OK, I used to cook professionally... it is how I put myself through university...<----NO poking FUN, and if you want amazing ribs do this...

you first boil the ribs in water, chopped up celery, chopped up carrots and onions, Add a bit of pickling spices. boil till they are cooked.

then place them covered in the fridge till they are cool over night if possible <--- this is KEY!

when you boil them you will lose alot of the fat (A bonus in drying them out.)

    Next,

Take the now cooled ribs and rub them with a decent dry rub. if you want that recipe as well let me know... but any store bought one will do.

take some good wood chips.. be it Hickory, Cherry, Apple, mesquite, or even Maple.. Soak them for an hour or two or even overnight (as I do when I put the ribs in)... Place the chips in a couple layers of tin foil) and open the top a bit. Place this tin foil package on your stones or steel grate (under and away from the grate your ribs are.) get them smoking....Over Low-medium Heat

Place your ribs on the grill, and let then dry out even further on the grill over low heat... Keep a spritzer with water in it handy incase of flare-up

sauce them 20 minutes before serving.. allowing 10 minutes per side.

If you want to make your own Jack Daniels sauce let me know I have a wicked recipe!

let stand off the BBQ for 5-10 minutes..

I promise you the greatest ribs you have ever had.

if you need more info let me know. I know it sounds time consuming but it really is not.. you just boil em the night before and fire them on the the bbq about an hour before supper...

    Gerritt.

Boiling them first has always worked for me, but I've never cooled them down in the fridge overnight. I'll have to try that....

  9. Now repeat after me:

I deserve good things! I'm entitled to my happiness. I refuse to beat myself up.

I am an attractive person. I am fun to be with,

    stuartsmalley.jpg

And gosh darn it, I just know we can win this hockey game!

    (Just couldn't resist :P )

  10. Where there's a will there's a way, eh bud? Great report and great way to salvage your last trip!

Question for you: How come you're saying the sea runs are done for the year? I always thought they ran in late August/early Sept to spawn...

What's the deal with these James Bay fish, are they on a different timetable? Just curious...

  11. Solopaddler is probably your guy ;)

LOL! Actually I'm not overly familiar with Bisco....neighboring adjacent lakes?, different story.

The one very very obvious spot on Bisco is the current area at the south end of the lake where Ramsey feeds it.

I do have friends in Sudbury who fish it, I know they do really well on the walleyes trolling spinner rigs with a worm (as long as the blade is chartreuse!).

Sorry, can't be much more help than that.....

    cheers, Mike

  12. That really was some front wasn't it? Pretty dramatic and interesting to me being a weather guy...

Probably a wise decision to pack it in at that juncture, although if anybody could've caught fish under those conditions it's likely you guys.

Glad to hear that Lew is getting back in the swing of things....

    cheers, Mike

  13. Just got back from the Doc about my baddly sun burnt pedal foot. Not good,1st and 2nd degree burn.

Sorry about your pain, but that's kinda funny :D . Only a fisherman would have a sun burnt pedal foot!

Me? I'm still dealing with Carpal Tunnel in my right arm from swinging my heavy float rod and 15 gram floats all winter :) .

I pretty much stick with Coppertone Sport, it's not as greasy as some of the others, doesn't have a scent that attracts bugs and is waterproof. 15 SPF if I want to tan a bit, 45 SPF if I'm looking for complete protection.
