  1. Great article Ranger!I have never had big pickeral numbers on Rice. Once I watched a guy rip jigging and was catching one after another. He was just drifting and ripping. Not sure they if were all pickeral but sure looked like it.

I've targeted walleye several times on Rice and at least for me rippin' a bucktail jig through the weeds (not so much edges, but big weedy flats 10-15' deep) has been BY FAR the most productive technique.

It's kinda hard to get the technique down, somewhat similar to working a jerkbait back to the boat.

I like a short, stiff spinning rod and 10lb mono when fishing this way...

Probably any quality bucktail will work, but these are the ones I use, with black/green/white colour being especially effective on Rice.

  2. Yes, excellent smallmouth fishing.

Classic shield lake, so light line and natural coloured tubes and twisters work well.

Live baitfish including crayfish aren't allowed, but an air injected nightcrawler on a lindy rig would be deadly for the deeper structure if they're fussy.

There's catchable numbers of lakers as well, but you'd likely need to troll for them with wire line this time of year.

  3. Mike with your young little crew you have to do more sucking up in order to go fishing more often :whistling: .Great stratedgy.

Sadly, there's some truth to that statement, although I still fish way more than all my other married friends combined :D .

Looking forward to the day when my kids are old enough to join me as well.

  4. If you have a small boat, bring it. Even if rigging in the lake is slow you can launch in Sky, Boat and Isaac Lakes. They comprise the headwaters of the Rankin River which is a major trib of the Sauble and very close to where you'll be camping. All 3 have decent largemouth.

The Sauble river below Sauble falls (where the park is) will likely have catchable numbers of smallmouth and channel cats this time of year especially in the lower reaches near the lake. In the lower river right near the lake is a large public boat launch on the south side. Can't miss it.

Beyond that there's tons of great little trout streams on the Bruce Peninsula. Buy a topo map of the area and explore. Pretty much every little ditch has trout up there.

Without giving away the farm, one spot worth checking out is Willow Creek about 3/4 of the way up to Tobermory. Lots of bush bashing but some very decent browns as well as brookies and small rainbows.

    cheers, Mike

  5. Totally agree!

    Actually I agree too.

Funny story about Cronzy: I was paddling by myself through a small lake on the Attwood River system N/E of Armstrong when I spied a vacant outpost camp.

Whenever I do any of these long solo trips I always check the camps for food left behind by fishermen, sometimes it's a goldmine.

Anyhow, I walk in and I'm assaulted by this horrible stench. On the table is a bowl filled with rotting pieces of fried chicken, yech! Although I was so hungry that I "almost" tried a piece anyway :P .

Beyond that there was tons of other non perishable food: pasta and jars of sauce, 2 packs of Kraft Dinner, cans of beans and chili, box of complete pancake mix and syrop, a box of chocolate/marshmallow cookies, 2 cans of peaches, instant coffee, sugar and whitener, several cans of Coke, and BEST of all an almost full 40oz bottle of Crown Royal :P .

On the wall written in magic marker with the date being the DAY before: "Gone Fishin' film crew, Darryl and Josh Choronzey"

THANK'S CRONZ! I lived off your scraps for a full week :D (although I drank a large portion of the Crown Royal at the end of a particularly brutal day and it just about killed me :P )

  6. Filleted with Skin on or off?

Sounds good I have evrything in the fridge but the Walleye - dang. :)

Well actually the recipe called for "scaled, filleted and skin left on"

I was too lazy to scale the fish and didn't want to leave the skin on so I used regular fillets and it tasted great.

Still put skin side down so they don't curl up though.

(If you're close to Dundas stop by, you can have some of my fillets ;) )

  7. Yeah yeah I know, I'm morphing into Martha Stewart here :D , but trust me it's delicious!

    Baked Walleye In Sour Cream

    Salt and Pepper

    1c Sour Cream

    1 3lb Walleye, filleted

    1/4ts Thyme

    1/2c grated Parmesan Cheese

    2tb Finely minced onion

    1/2c breadcrumbs

    2tb soft butter

    2tb lemon juice

    5 strips of bacon

Salt and pepper the fish. Mix minced onions and butter and spread on both sides of the fish.

Lay the bacon strips on the bottom of a shallow baking dish and lay in the fish

    skin side down.

In a bowl mix the sour cream, thyme, grated cheese, bread crumbs, and lemon

juice and spread mixture over the fish.

Bake at 325 for 30 mins, give or take.

    Mmmmm.....

(side note: it just scored me major brownie points with my wife....something to consider if you're married :P )

  8. 6 Steam Whistle is about all I can afford. What is that stuff, like $42.00 a case?? No thanks. My favorite beer is anything that doesn't cost me more than $26.40 per case. And there's a good selection of them these days. I think there's 3 or 4 on Ontarios top 10 sellers list right now.

Yeah, it's pricey, but then how does one put a price on perfection? :D

When I head to my cabin in N/W Quebec ALL beer purchases are done there. For those that don't know beer is waaay cheaper in QC compared to Ontario. 24 cans of Coors cost me $19.99 when I was there last week.

If you look around you'll find it even cheaper on sale. Bottles are even cheaper...

Gotta love Quebec if you're a beer drinker! :)

  9. I appreciate the time and effort it took to post that Doug, thanks!

Sounds like an amazing trip, with first class accomodations and food. Until I read the last few lines of your report I was thinking what a great place to maybe bring my wife to...

Gotta tell you, I've flown in the evening before the scheduled morning departure of a bunch of my fly-in trips. In every instance when they did this there was a nominal fee, sometimes no fee, as it was to their benefit as well freeing up the plane when they were busier in the morning. Now, none of my trips were to an expensive 5 star lodge, but still, it sure sounds as though you were taken advantage of and that sucks!

Personally I would have refused to pay it, I mean what are they going to do refuse to fly you out?

Without getting into the details here I had a somewhat similar situation with an outfitter last August that was, let's just say, pretty unpleasant. In the end I stood my ground and refused to pay any extra charges...never heard a peep from him again.

    cheers, Mike
