  1. I've shown this picture before Mike, but it's so textbook for fishing right in front of a major storm moving in.

It had been very hot & humid for several days and the radio was calling for a major thunderstorm to move thru the area in the evening. My buddy & I kept an eye on the sky and just before it seemed ready to hit, I told my wife were going fishing and would be back soon.

We hopped in the boat, ran down the lake to a favorite spot, I made 5 casts and got this guy, took a picture, realeased the fish as the lightening bolts were flashing over my left shoulder, and headed for home.

Total time from when we left the dock till we returned was 15 minutes.

My wife said, "what's wrong, I thought you guys were going fishing ??"

I said "we did go fishing, it just doesn't take long to catch them" :thumbsup_anim:

Only bad part was about 20 minutes later the trailer park was hit by lightening and it blew out my satellite & TV but that's another story.

That's classic Lew, gotta love it when the fish follow the script!

  2. Sometimes I go barefoot, sometimes not depends.

What I can't believe is how many people wear crocs.

My gawd they gotta be the ugliest shoe, and fashion fad

in general in the history of mankind! :D:D:D

    (I don't care how comfy they are, they're gross :P )

  3. My favorite time on the water is when a severe storm is just moving over the horizon and the sky is jet black, but you gotta be quick with that one and be on the prime spot, specially if there's lightening associated with it.

    Right on Lew!

Be on a high percentage spot, and if you can smell the ozone in the air you're golden! :w00t:

  4. You never really hear anglers at large mentioning this, but when I was a young lad my uncle told me the fishing would always be good when you saw a sundog in the sky.

Being a weather specialist and an angler this kind of stuff facinates me :) . For those who don't know what a sundog is, it's an atmospheric phenomenon caused by sunlight shining through high level cirrus clouds and refracting off the suspended ice crystals, usually observed right next to the sun.

    They can look like this

    sundog1.jpg

Or in rare cases like this

    sundog2.jpg

Over the years I've watched for these things, and I can tell you truthfully the fishing is usually better when they occur (at least in my experience).

Why is this? well, I can only guess. Usually indications of vapour or ice particles hanging around in the upper atmosphere is a pretty good clue that weather of some kind is approaching within 24hrs. which usually means a front is on the way...so the barometer may be affected.

A falling barometer will usually mean fast and furious action if you're on the water

    at the right time.

Another more common, similar visual indicator is contrails from planes hanging around in the air for a long time.

So what do you guys say?

Does anyone else out there watch out for sundogs? :D

  5. Like TJ said, fish 'em like specks.

Good chance you'll see me there as well when it opens ;) .

I guess it would help to check these things :P . For some reason my brain was telling me Aug.15th was the opener, but it was actually August 1st.

Hope there's a few left when I make it over there...

  6. I've experimented with the Gulp crawlers and Powerbait crawlers on my spinner rigs. They do catch fish and they're definitely more durable. Worth a shot during the summer bite when the fishes metabolism is at its highest and they'll hit a faster moving bait (more of a visual thing).

For most of my spinner rig fishing though nothing beats a nice big fat juicy conditioned crawler!

  7. Wow, awesome responses guys, thanks!

As far as the tite-lock bracket goes, I use one on my 16' aluminum at the cottage. I totally agree, they work great.

Probably will just go with the suction cup though as this unit as mentioned will be used for canoe trips, fly in trips, etc., where weight and bulk is a factor.

    cheers

  8. Not sure if road access is restricted, but if you're able, Aston Lake and Eagle Lake off the Red Squirrel Rd. are both great lakes. Good walleye, pike and smallmouth.

Even if you can't drive right to the lake if it's not far you may be able to wheel your boat in....

  9. Hi Mike,

I have the Eagle Cuda 168 & it's been great. I've never had a problem with the suction cup coming off, even at high speeds and on a rental boat. For the price, I think it's a really good unit - not fancy, but all the basics that I need!

    Thanks Deb

  10. :Gonefishing: I'm pretty sure i seen you heading hwy 11 north just south of huntsville while i was headin' soouth to Wonderland with the kids...??? is that possible.?

We left Dundas at 11pm Wed. night which put us at Huntsville roughly 2am Thursday.

So....my guess is not possible unless of course the lineups at Wonderland are so bad now

a midnight departure to get a spot in line is required :D.

  11. Walleye are easily caught on a worm harness, I usually use them while backtrolling at night, for deeper water you can " lindy rig" your harness.

But as for " spinner baits" i've caught the hungry ones by accident on a spinnerbait while fishin for pike . But if you ask me ..

there are better baits out there for consistantly catching Eyes.

Going back to the harnesses, dipsy divers or planer boards , i usually use them in clearer water or when the bite is "OFF" , but generally behind the boat is where i catch mine trolling .Usually I'm a jig & minnow man , and do very good.

right now I'm using a wally minnow silver/black on a lead core with a 8 foot fluoro leader and am just KILLIN'EM! I'm outfishing my jig&minnow combo 10:1 ... and deep water , 80 foot of water walleye @ 35 feet . Lake Nipissing . lots of catch & release , most are in the slot managed to take home 8 above the slot on Sunday{ I rarely do this , I usually catch & release, but I was guiding} and was paid good $$$.

    anyway .

Take care be safe and keep a tight line...ZZZZZZZZZING!

Don't mean to hijack the thread, but that's some interesting info there Muskieman.

It's not very often you hear about guys fishing for deep suspended walleyes.....at least

on inland lakes. Not many people do it, I believe they're pretty much untapped fish.

On my cottage lake there's several large deep, seemingly featureless basins over 80' deep

that I've just recently started to fish. On my lake there's no doubt these fish are schooling

up and chasing big schools of shiners...

What are the suspended fish on Nip feeding on?

    In any case, very interesting!

  12. I've used a piranha max 15 for the last few years,Its a good unit but the suction cup wont handle high speed(10mph+). Other than that I have no complaints.

That's 2 out of 3 responses saying the Humminbird's suction cup, well, sucks :D .

Guess I'll take a real close look at Eagle.

  13. Well out of those units you mentioned the eagle, which is lowrance anyway the fish-easy is a good unit and has alot more options, and for the price is a very good unit lots of power, and perfect for the smaller kawartha type lakes its great ,and if it ever dies or you have any probs, the lowrance head office is in missisauga ontario, and they are very easy to deal with so i have never owned anything other than eagle and lowrance, and speak with experience,so trust me go with the fish-easy great unit....good-luck cheers :thumbsup_anim::Gonefishing:

It's a bit more coin than the others, around $220 at lebarons. Thanks for the feedback I'll take a close look at it when I'm there on Thursday.

    cheers

  14. Actually September will GRATEFULLY be here soon. Then we'll own the waters around our boats as most of the idiots will finally be gone.I might even get back on cooch.

Years ago when I lived in Port Carling my friends had an annual "goodbye tourist" party on labour day on their front lawn.

Sat there on lawn chairs drinking beer and waving bye bye to all the summer people :D
