  1. I am asking for some current information and advice on getting from the QEW to 400 North not using the 407 ETR. We will be going through Toronto Thursday Aug.9 at about 11:00Am and traveling to Capreol, Ont. and boarding Via Rail for an 18 hr train trip to Flindt Landing Lodge in the Wabakimi Park. We did this trip last year with great fishing results but the train was most enjoyable. Is there a good alternate route to the 400 N avoiding the tolls? Seanik
  2. It' that time of year, we are planning our annual fishing trips to Ontario. We have booked a trip July 14-21 to Lake Nagagami a fly in out of Hornepayne. A 2nd trip is planned for mid August, I came across the Flame Lake Lodge website which is located about 1 hr South of Chapleau on Hwy. 129. The rates are very reasonable and it looks like a nice place. I have never been in this area and would appreciate any fishing information about Flame Lake and the surrounding lakes. Flame Lake lodge maybe more of a resort than the fishing camp type lodge we prefer. Thank you, Seanik
  3. I flew in to Indian Lake with Sudbury aviation about 7 years ago. There were 2 other outfitters on Indian Lake at that time. The Northern cabin belonged to Lakeland Airways out of Temagami, the cabin just North of Sudburys belonged to a fellow named Blake and he was from Wawa or somewhere South of Indian. If I remember correctly there was another cabin privately owned. There is a bay just right of the Northly cabin that has a stream running into it from another Lake. The stream requires a bit of hard work to access this small lake but well worth the effort. One disappointment about Indian was the access over the Southern dam, we found at least 20 boats cached and many campers from the cache camped on the Islands. Indian Lake fishing at that time was below average but I hear there is a slot limit and things have improved. Hope this helps Seanik
  4. A sincere "thank you" to all that replied to my request for Toronto traffic information. We will be crossing at the Peace bridge, The Rt. 25 North to the 401 looks interesting and may require further looking into, but we will probably go the conventional route. We will driving a Honda cr-v,2 wheel drive that gets about 28 mpg and probably will gas up at the 400 split. Any info on gas stations again would be a big help. My fishing buddy is some kind of Best Western preferred card carrying member and gets big discounts at their motels so we will overnight there in Sudbury. One of the main reasons for this fishing trip is the 5 hr train ride to Shenango Lodge, havn't been on a train since military service, a very long time ago(1961). A report will follow upon our return. Thanks, Seanik
  5. We have booked a 2nd Ontario fishing trip this year to Shenango Lake. We will overnight in Sudbury and then board a train at Capreol for a 5 hour ride to the lodge. The first trip in July was to Lake Nagagami, a fly in out of Hornepayne, a very productive lake, 2 of us easily caught 50 Walleyes in a mornings fishing/ I regularly listen to a Toronto radio station (680 AM)and hear about a lot of traffic delays and back ups. I will be going through Toronto on Saturday Aug.28 at about 11:00AM. The car GPS directions are: QEW/403E-427N-401E-400N. The 407ETR is a 40.00 round trip option. We have not been in the Toronto area for several years and I would appreciate any travel insight and advice. Seanik
  6. The outfitter is doing the governments work when they collect the tax with your payment, some outfitters are offering an instant 6 1/2 rebate. Seanik
  7. I have booked a fishing trip in Ontario (Northern Expeditions out of Hornepayne) and I understand there is a 13% harmonized tax. Non-residents are granted a 6 1/2 % rebate on the tax. Is it a hassle for the outfitter to give this rebate at the time of final payment or do forms have to be sent in to the government It would sure be a nice service to clients if an instant rebate can be given. Seanik
  8. I can't get any first hand information on the lodge anywhere, they have been in business for 45 years, makes one wonder. My next question is, What the best route to Rolphton, Ontario from Toronto. Probably the easiest is # 11 to North Bay and then East. Mapquest says a more Easterly route near Peterbourgh, this seems like a lot of secondary roads through towns. Any route recommendations would be appreciated, since we have Moose Territory Lodge at the top of our short list with an overnight boys night out in Toronto.
  9. Greetings to all from the South shore of Lake Erie. I don't post much but I check this site every day, been busy with trips to the local veterans hospital and the health issues are on the mend. We didn't do our annual trip to Canada this year because of various scheduling and health problems, but 2009 is definitly a go. I was surfing the net looking for a lodge or camp that would be a 600 miles or less drive and a bit adventerous, yes I know we are getting to be old geezers but one gets his thrills where one can. I came across " Moose Territory Lodge,Rapides des Joachims, Quebec via Rolphton, Ontario", they must be located about 70 miles East of North Bay. The lodge has rights to 65 square miles and 45 lakes. They have a sawmill and build their own pontoon boats and offer a meal plan. The final 62 miles to camp is a bush road and their brochure says one needs a truck or 4x4 to travel it. The lodge is for sale, the present owners have owned it for 45 years, probably an age issue. Overall this looks like someplace we should take a hard look at for our next trip. We can't find anyone who has been there or has first hand information about MTL. Your thoughts and advice is solicited. Thank you, Seanik (Jerry)
  10. We fished in Southeast Alaska 2 years ago and are booking a July 2008 trip. We were at Elfin Cove Lodge which is 65 air miles Northwest of Juneau and accessable by floatplane. There is another lodge in Elfin cove which seems first rate, Eagle Charters. A lot of Information is available on their websites. These outfits are quite expensive and in the range of 3000.00+ for 5 days, however halibut caught here by sportsman are some of the heavest in Alaska and 150 lber's are common. Another self guided lodge we considered is Green Rock Wilderness lodge at 1700.00 for 7 days' looks like a good deal, photo gallery on their website shows smaller halibut but a lot of them. I am convinced July is the best month for all around fishing in Alaska. King salmon are generally caught with downriggers as they stage near home rivers, Coho are usually a late Aug. early Sept. fish. Barndoor sized halibut are a hoot to catch in 180' to 300' of water and a workout for your back and arms. It's a long and tiring flight for us. We fly out of Pittsburgh, Pa to Seattle, Wa. and then an Alaska Air flight to Juneau. I haven't checked but Air Canada might have a flight direct to some Alaskan cities. Our travel time could be from 10 to 24 hrs. I hope this helps, email if more info is needed
  11. We have gone to the Gouin Reservoir 3 out of the past 4 years. The outfitter is " Walleye Point" they have a website, good fishing and accomodations that fit your needs. Be aware that most of the outfitters mentioned require extensive drives on gravel roads, the distance can be from 60 to 150 miles. As far as baits go, you can't go wrong trolling a gold or fire tiger jointed shad rap. We have great success with leeches or crawlers fished over the side on a bare hook or jig. If you need more information please email
  12. Hello Art and welcome to the Marinette faternaty, Over the past years I have owned 3 Marinettes, a 28' express. a 32' flybridge and a 37' sedan flybridge. All were great boats and as you can see the bigger boat itius infected me thourghly. The 28" express got about 2 mpg at crusing speed which is much more mpg than a comparable glass boat. The bottom requires a special anti fouling paint to keep down corrosion problems. The Marinettes are very popular here on Lake Erie and there is much information on them on the net. They were made in Louisville , Kentucky and the company went out of business in the early 1990's. If you need information or advice please email, I got to know these boats very well since I did all the required maintaince on them. Jerry
