These might work for you Steve. As others have said, Baffin is a decent brand, and Rocky brand is its own brand sold through multiple outlets, but I do not know much about them.

I am sure you can find an outlet for these somewhere down there, but if not, you can order them from up here.

Oh I know very well how dry it is, actually prefer it that way, but may not get the chance to try this as I have not gotten out yet this year.

Great news Spiel! Does anyone have more info on the town of Dorion?

Dorion is 45 min. NE of Thunder Bay, closer to Nipigon than TBay. The fish culture station is about 15 min. up a road just west of the Wolf River on a small spring fed creek called Spring Creek, which flows into the Coldwater River, also a kilometer west of the Wolf River. There is another station operated by the MNR on the Wolf River itself, but I do not know what they do there. The Dorion Fish Culture Station has been in operation since the 1930's. It has brood stock from the Nipigon Strain of brook trout, which is used to supply Thunder Bay and Nipigon districts with a "put and take" fishery for them in summer and winter in local lakes, along with trying to re-establish existing populations of native fisheries.

They have also reared lake trout for re-introduction for some lakes.

Hope it works out for you, and yes, a well test is required, regardless of what the neighbors say about no issues with water. It will be an issue with the well on the property being able to provide you with appropriate water flow per given hour, and other things such as contamination/bacteria. My bud went through this 3 yrs. ago, and that was one of the major factors in the purchase of the property, along with the existing septic field.

I do know you can purchase Kevlar "nose" ???? protector kits for canoes. Our Outdoor Recreation dept. at my local university put them on ALL of their plastic/kevlar/fibreglass/etc. canoes. But they do cost money. The technician told me(at the time, which was 15 yrs. ago) they were paying $60.00 each for them. What they cost now I do not know.

Are you talking about "red wigglers" or nightcrawlers/dew worms. Most places can sell you a "flat" of 500 dew worms. I used to buy them that way when I fished every weekend from May opener for walleye until opening of hunting(gun) season. Rarely ran out, even fishing both days on a weekend, and back then cost about $70.00.

First of all, thanks to John's son-in-law, Fishing for Tyler has it's own Logo now and I believe the Team fron Extreme Angler TV will be joining us again

 

 

For those of you new to the board this year, Fishing for Tyler is a fundraising ice fishing tournament that is held for a young lad with Autism...and a fun day for all who attend

 

This year it will be held on Sat. Feb 14. I realize it's Valentines day, but it's also the license free weekend . As usual things will begin at 7am and measurements at 1 I think, plenty of time to get everyone home in time to be with their honies

 

There will be more info coming but for now I am looking for volunteers to help with some things. I've finally realized and accepted I need more help...this event keeps growing

 

I need help with setting up, signing people in, setting up prizes, I think I've got the cooks covered , I'd like it if someone could be a photographer for me...oh I'll need someone to measure the fish when they come in too.

If you think you can help with anything I would really appreciate it...just let me know

You shouldn't as far as I am concerned.

Lots of the trails we are using,crossing are on traditional access roads/trails that we used to use to get to lakes to fish well before the trail system came into place, regardless of how the trail conditions were. The fact that sections of them may be groomed because of great snow conditions, well, excellent.

Just don't try to fool them by having a couple spools of ice fishing line in your backpack without any lures, augers, jigging rods, tip-ups, etc.

And, do the proper speed limit also. The trails do have speed limits. Honor them.

It's never been an issue up here in Northwestern Ontario anyway that I know of.

I may be way off base here, but with the spring steel rod you mentioned, it may be a wire line setup for trolling for lakers(or maybe Musky). The reel seems too small though.

Maybe your grandfather trolled for lakers in shallower water in the spring after ice out with it??

Usually the reels were 9-12" diameter, filled with copper line(yes, I said copper line, still have one around here somewheres spooled with it).

Never saw a rod like that with a wood handle though.

Its a keepsake for sure, find a nice place for it somewhere in your house and do not try to find value in it, it already has it.
