Great to see the young people out there enjoying what Ontario has to offer, memories that will last a lifetime. Some really nice fish there as well mate, well done on both fronts.

I never did till i came down under. The salt is hard on the line, i started using Kevin VanDam’s line conditioner ( hard time finding it now) and the stuff really works. Makes the line very pliable and easy to cast even after a whole season on the reel. It maybe my imagination but i even seem to cast farther with it. When i return home it will continue to use it.. top product imo.

Well he is within his legal rights to keep that fish. That said i think this is why we need a size limiter on certain species. I will give this to Australian fish management. For example the Murray Cod ( a truely amazing fish..gets 70pounds in the river) has a min size to keep and a fish over X cms must be returned as well. I believe muskie and non Great Lake Trout should also share this rule. However until this changes he is within his rights to keep that fish. I may not like it but instead of complaining i write a letter every month to the politicians( sometimes every week).

99% of all the lures on the market are designed to catch the fisherman. Grab some Canadian wrigglers, some spoons ( cleo's, lucky strikes, daredevils)... 3-4 raps, a couple different sized flatfish and a few bucktail jiggs. This covers all your bases. the most important tool is a few sinkers and hooks and a few minnows. Even when i troll for salmon or bows, 50% of the time i don't use lures, cutbait is just as effective and the strike rate is higher. Go smelting, salt and freeze them. You will have bait year round and top fishing.

My First Aussie fish report...updated caught a few tonight

Well went out again tonight and caught a few fish pictured below, also hooked in to a shark!!!!... Was about a 3ft Gummy shark, but i did not have my wire on and it eventually broke me off in the surf, last picture is me with the bugger on, sure puts a bend into my 14ft surf rod. Typical Aussie Salmon, a bit on the small side but very good fun, they constantly jump and run. -

Yer, i think they are actually a member of the ocean perch family. Now to really confuse the matter, we also have Blue Salmon and king salmon(threadfin). They both look more like catfish. They confuse me even more, because they also have a thriving chinook and atlantic salmon fishery here... confused yet?. i am -

That is there actual name here, Eastern Australian Salmon Arripis trutta (Forster, 1801). Australia has several Salmon native to the Southern hemisphere. They are not related to the North American variety. -

We actually have a healthy amount of Chinook, Rainbow, Brown, and atlantics. They are all stock and in the lakes. The salmon i was after are the Australian Ocean going ones. Pictured below. Not me but a good pic of a salmon that i am targetting. -

So we made our way to Killarney for some surf fishing. Weather was beautiful for this time of year and around 24 degrees. Headed out around 5pm with the hopes of some big salmon. Unforunately they were not around, the tiddlers were stealing our bait left and right. I finally hooked one about 12cm's i was to embarrassed to take a photo. I had 1 good strike for the 2hrs we were down there but snapped a few nice photos of the area. some photos of the bait we use.. pipi's(clams) and Blue bait. some shots of the area... the rock you see is a lava flow from a near by volcano -
Thanks mate, so still no catch and release, thank gawd. The survival rate on them is about 25% with a release. You are a wealth of info thanks a heap.

Many years ago, mid 80's, i helped with the Aurora Trout project. I put in many long days helping with the census on Whitepine and Whirlygig. I have heard from a friend of mine in Blindriver that the trout have once again been decimated. Now this guy has a major tendency to Bull a bit so. Can anyone confirm or have first hand knowledge of this?? What happened ??? i can not find anything on the net about this at all.

The dude that used to run Harpoon charters is top notch and can accommodate 10 fisherman nps. He is based out of Erieau (Rondeau). http://www.harpooncharters.com/

If my memory serves me correct(prolly not), the 60's rapala's were in a greenish box, and in the 70's they went to the baby blue. I maybe wrong though, that is many moon's ago.

I would think that floater is from mid 70's. To bad it is not blue, was my fav lure for a few decades.

Congrats on the nice atlantic matey... top top fish. I am in no way saying i agree with everything Darryl does or says but you need a reality check mate. I know of at least 10 trout stocking projects that would not exist if it was not for him. Back in the 80's when all the "Einstein" biologists were messing up our stocking programs and screwing with our fish stocks, it was Darryl that stood his ground and started half a dozen Rod n Gun club stocking programs of sustainable fish. Not splake... not tiger trout... not skamania..not super salmon... i am talking sustainable fish that actually breed. Have a read... he says what a lot of us think. http://www.temagamistewardship.ca/news/SunTimesReport.html

Ice out splake - what baits/techniques do you use?
Fudd replied to jat's topic in General Discussion
Well i used to fish splake at ice out at the mouth of the Kagawong River. Used to be very good there but have not done it for ages, like the above posters i generally just threw some spoons. I also had a bit of luck with the old Canadian Wrigger. Look for fast water depth changes, they seem to be the preferred hideout. best of luck. -
