Like I said, unless you counted the pores on the lower mandible, it's difficult to confirm one way or another.

I'm certainly no expert in fish ID...however, two things have me thinking its a Pike, and not a cross.

Google "juvenile Northern Pike images"...all kinds of examples with that exact colour pattern. I've caught many myself with that colouration in lakes that the nearest Musky was more than 200 km away.

Second, I had a cottage on Wahsoune Island right in the middle of Massassauga PP for several years. Never saw a Tiger, never heard of one....but I did catch young Pike that looked exactly like that. I may be wrong, but for whatever reason Pike and Musky just don't seem to hybridize in Georgian Bay.

Although not always the case, Tigers (and pure Muskies) typically have darker stripes on a lighter background. In the Kawarthas you will see olive coloured Tigers, but its a dark stripe on light. The photo is a typical mature Tiger (49") from NW Ontario's Eagle Lake this past September....big head, rounded fins...Tiger traits vs Musky.

If you want confirmation, find Gord Pyzer on Facebook. Gord knows his toothy critters.

    Definatly worth looking into. Thanks!

  2. I doubt its a Juvy, i've seen small pike and they look nothing like this. This one was close to 30" so again, not a juvy.  Very interesting.

BTW, yes, both species exist in the waters I was fishing, one was the Massassauga park.

In Germany and Switzerland "catch & release" fishing has been banned for some time now. You can still catch a fish and eat it, but C & R is considered "torturing an animal for your own personal amusement". Obviously Bass Tournaments aren't a thing there...

"In Switzerland and Germany, catch and release fishing is considered inhumane and is now banned.[5] In Germany, the Animal Welfare Act states that "no-one may cause an animal pain, suffering or harm without good reason".[6] This leaves no legal basis for catch and release due to its argued inherent lack of "good reason", and thus personal fishing is solely allowed for immediate food consumption. Additionally, it is against the law to release fish back into the water if they are above minimum size requirements and aren't a protected species or in closed season."

yea, if its liberals, then ignore.  Look what they've done here. It just boggles the mind. In germany, they also closed down all their nuke plants and are starving for power. I wouldn't use them as compass.

I follow the Fish Ecology and Conservation Ecology Lab from Carleton University on FB and they just posted a link to this research article that they agree with. Some nutbar countries including Britain have passed legislation recognizing fish and even invertebrates as sentient beings that require protection under animal welfare regulations if you can believe that nonsense. Here's a link to the complete article.

Here's a link to the Cooke Lab. http://www.fecpl.ca/

Looks like fake news to me. Fish are by nature carnivores and cannibalistic.  Lets face it, they feed on each other in the most violent ways. Too much fake news these days.

    Sentient? now that's funny ;)

    1. Congrats to your grandson, absolutely would snap a pic of my nephews etc. as well. For myself though, certainly not, just ask me about my "PB" laketrout...I just know that it was massive.

    2. The rules dont need changing, and it has nothing to do with this particular scenario, and absolutely everything to do with how the average person does their fish photo op...aka land the fish, bring it in the boat, try unhook, grab pliers, struggle to get hooks out, look at fish, weigh it, measure it, search for camera, take photo, realize its blurry, take another photo and then release. For a fish on a bed, or a big musky...thats a wrap.

and second of all, tournament guys would 100000% take advantage of this and start hosting catch measure release tournaments out of season. Full stop. Dont change the rules, im not even happy about it happening in zone 20. Its unnecessary and those bass dont need additional tournament pressure beyond what they already experience.

If you really need to document your catches, get a go pro, problem solved. Ask Nick Cousivs about his 8lb smallie he caught in zone 20.

Hey Ark, as usual you make a lot of sense. This happens to many of us and sure, we shouldn't snap a pic or weigh it but if we're careful about the time out of water, i'd say go for it. Now, maybe the pic could be prefaced with "my grandson last fall" to CYA but this is a pretty small forum so I don't think its an issue. Also, pretty hard for the MNR to come down on someone based on a pic. They should be focusing their efforts on the poachers.

Case and point, I was in the long point inner bay last may and there was a ton of people fishing. Now there is a sanctuary which it appeared that they were honoring but outside of that it was game on.  I mentioned to a few fishermen about the season restrictions and the location of the sanctuary and certainly got some dirty looks!

Now if you ask why I was there its because I had a new boat and I was going through the break in procedure. I didn't even have a rod in the boat.

  6. I've suddenly ended up with a week off work so I'm considering getting a camp site at Restoule PP (may 21 to 24) and fishing Stormy and Clear lakes where I'll be perusing everything except muskie

Anyone on here going as well? Notwithstanding the bug issue, any pointers on where to find fish? Wouldn't mind a few 'eyes or small lakers for dinner mixed in with bass/pike for fun.

    Cheers!

just throwing it out there, for reference...but ive swapped to using a switch as my battery post for my electronics, and then another switch for accessories like lights etc.

It cleans up your battery and isolates some stuff to allow you to kill power to your electronics.

I also installed a grounding bar for my electronics.

Ive got 6awg wire running to the switches and grounding bar and then individual feeds for each unit running to their respective spots.

i went an extra mile and even made my own fuse clusters so that I can easily access and swap fuses if need be.

Thats how the guys are sonar pro's are doing it.

Nice work there! I watched a couple of vids on the Seaclear wiring harnesses and it would be real easy to duplicate what they offer for less $$.  I just installed a HDS 16 at the helm so now I have that, 2 HDS 12s at the bow and Active Target. I've started collecting components to do what you did ;). 6AWG front to back and Bluesea fuse blocks, and a dedicated disconnect switch.  All I need now is time..lol

You guys fish woods bay and moon river delta much? I went once and didn't fair too well. I can't remember where we launched. Maybe Pete's.  Is it as bad as honey harbour in terms of rocks? Can't recall

I fish that area all the time and the fishing in the entire area was poor all of last year. No idea why except that the water level was quite a bit lower than it was in 2020 which is the last year I visited. And yes, lots of rock like the honey harbour area. All of Georgian bay is littered with rocks and shoals. You'll need to use a chart and remain vigilant until you get to know an area.  Fish are in there. Huge pike, nice walleye (if you can find them), and bruiser Bass, both large and smallmouth. I always mark tons of fish along drops and deep holes. No idea what they are tho.

I need to tap into the inner propeller heads in this great forum - specifically around my new Terrova trolling motor.  I bought a new Terrova p/n Terrova80/DSC/WR-60" and now I would like to add a bow mounted fish finder.

I read the manual and there are many different options to control this motor - wireless remote that it comes with or via iphone using One Boat Network app.  Using the One Boat Network app one can also link the trolling motor to a Hummingbird fish finder and I am assuming Lowrance as well (with the adapter) and once this happens you can save waypoints to send to the motor and allow the motor to follow a specific depth.  I am assuming the unit just needs GPS and a mapping card??

Does anyone have this motor and can tell me if my assumptions are correct?  Does anyone have a bow mounted fishfinder recommendations?  I find the MinnKota web sit useless because it keeps telling you what the Terrova can do but it but does not spell out what hardware/software that you need to make it happen.   I am using a Lowrance HDS7 for my main unit.

    Thanks gentleman

I've built and run several configs over the years and now have a Ranger bass boat w/2-12" and 1-16" graph, forward facing sonar, 2 ducers at the stern, external GPS, and I replaced all the factory wiring. One question - do you have a helm graph and what is it?

    This is what I recommend:

    1. Go with a Humminbird, that way you'll be able to use all the functions.  The HELIX models (w/CHIRP) would be the best place to start unless you want a touch-screen. Size is important because at the bow, the graph will be located down around your feet.
    2. The Terrova has a transducer that you should utilize - make sure the graph is compatible (IE. Dual Spectrum  CHIRP) etc
    3. Phone apps are not the best for operating the Terrova (they are slow and only include a few controls - or at least they did), plus you wont want to drop your phone overboard trying to use it to control the terrova!  Terrova remote or the controls on the graph (if networked) are the best.
    4. Ensure that the graph has networking ability to you can connect it to your graphs, etc, either now or in the future.
    5. Depending on the bow graph you select you'll have to consider the quality of power you bring to it. The more powerful the graph, the more important this becomes.
    6. If you need any further help, PM me and i'd be more than happy to have a phone conversation on any questions you may have.

The legality of having a fire directly on the ice can vary depending on the location. It's essential to check with your local laws and regulations before starting a fire on a frozen lake. In some places, it is legal if the fire is contained within a receptacle above the ice or in a barrel to protect the ice and limit the amount of embers emitted

Based on this its likely because someone with no idea thinks the fire can melt 2 ft of ice and someone will fall in and drown..

  12. I'm considering a camping trip to this area once the walleye season opens and looking for feedback on the backcountry sites on Stormy vs. the campsites on Restoule. A few questions for the experts if I may:

    • Is there ample parking at the Stormy lake access point and what about the launch? I don't care if there isn't a dock and I don't mind getting my feet wet.  I have a 22' glass bassboat.
    • Am I reading the regs correctly? Is does the Bass season open the same date as walley and pike?
    • I enjoy the back country sites the best so if this ends up being my option, any recommendation on which one? It will have to have a bit of sand so I can beach the boat, a spot for 2 sizable tents (sleeping and kitchen) etc.
    • Will stormy be busy in early june? buggy? etc etc.
    • Anyone else interested? Would this be a good time of year in this area?

    TIA,

    P
