  1. Wow....that poor Muskie almost looks dead and VERY stressed out :whistling: ....

"About 35-40 min later and 3 flipping jumps out of the water I finally was able to grab him/her"....why did it take so long for you to reel this fish in if you were targetting Muskie to begin with????...I'm very surprised to hear that you were able to revive that fish and even if you did, the chances of that fish surviving is very LOW!!!

Get yourself some heavier line so you can keep your drag set tight without a line break-off, a GOOD Muskie net, some bolt cutters and most importantly: If you plan on targeting Muskie then I suggest you do a lot more reading and research...I would also suggest joining a Muskie Club such as Muskies Canada so you can educate yourself a bit more..

  2. Well it's all the nice people here that find things for you on the internet and post them just to see your colour change to red and blood pressure go up. :sarcasm: Once a year or so I go to the MNR website and check for any updates, then Transport Canada Marine for any boating rule/safety updates, you get the picture..

I always check the MNR website for updates because MNR constantly have changes in fishing dates and other regulations.....But I remember asking the clerk at Transport Canada back in 1994 if we had to renew the vessel permit and he said it's good for as long as you own the vessel... ;) ....very similar to my ATV plate which is good for the duration of me owning it without having to renew :good:

  3. Thanks for all the replies guys....I decided to go with Trojan Tackle for the customized rod mounts..Dave does awesome work and I'm really impressed with the mounts he made for me... :thumbsup_anim:

Just finished installing them this afternoon.....Muskie opener is 10 days away here on the Ottawa R......I can hardly wait!!

  4. My vote is for the Scotty Pro Pack 1116's, have had a pair for several years. Got everything you need right outta the box, I really like and find the 60" telescoping rigger arm. Putting new ones on the Ranger.

The other reason why I'm a big fan of Scotty riggers is #1 they're Canadian made, the no power down, fully capable of handling the heavy weights with speed we're now using on Lake Ontario to fish the depths we're now fishing ex: 20# ball retrieved @ 185 feet/min with an amp draw of 11, if you're using the more common 10# balls you'd be looking at 222 feet/min with an amp draw of 6. The other thing I like about the Scotty riggers is that should you ever require any replacement parts and unable to make it to the locale tackle shop or they don't carry Scotty's, Canadian Tire does and there's at least one in every town/city in Canada.

Hope this helps, any questions just ask.

    Cheers,

    G

    Thanks for the info G

    Much appreciated!!

  5. I'm starting to look at downriggers for my new ride...Electric is my choice as I fish alot on my own. Looking for opinions and experiences from other members here. I started to read some reviews on Canon MAG 10HS riggers and they are not very good!! Here's 2 of the many reviews:

    jerky motion.

If this downrigger bucks any harder it's going to rip the bolts out of the gunnels.

I phoned a Cannon service center in new York and he says nothing can be done because the motor is made in Asia some place,

What happend?? I used to have Cannon's i liked but I'd never buy another one."

"Finally sold my old Cannons that were made in Muskegon Mi. and bought new ones.

There is no way I can get used to dealing with these new downriggers.

Why couldn't they make them easy to use like the old ones.?

The switch is very jumpy .

I find them impossible to control and I've used Cannon's for many years.

I would not make the same decision to buy these mag 10's again."

I've read a few other threads on downriggers and it looks like a lot of the OFC members like Scotty....is there a particular model??

    Thanks...

    Steve

  6. Steve, I spoke to the boyz from Trojan Tackle at the Musky Odyssee last year about making me up something to sit on top of the tow pole and they said they could come up with something but it would cost me about $150

They do excellent work at Trojan but I like to putz around and try to come up with things on my own. I already had the tow bar & spare DownEaster sitting here, so all it really cost me was the $10 for the dock bracket.

If it works that'll be good, but if it doesn't for whatever reason, I'm only out a couple $$$$

Be good to see what you come up with for your new boat.

I shouldn't jump to conclusions yet Lew....I have yet to see what the quote is to rig the boat up by Trojan. :whistling:

  7. Falling asleep isn't too much of a problem. It's staying asleep for me.

I'm good until about 3am and then it's just tossing and turning from that point on with

visuals of what's to come consuming my mind.

I'm the same as you Laszlo!!....I fall asleep quickly and then some internal alarm clock rings in my brain and I'm wide awake from 2:00AM onwards....

    Have a great trip Gerritt!!
